Ohio man who killed 6-month-old baby seeks mercy

Though, of course, if you've seen the utter dreck on tv lately, you'd be forgiven for thinking that 30 years' worth of it might be a fate worse than death....  (Apr 8, 2013 | post #4)

China sentences 113 government workers, pig farmers over ...

Actually, some people in Nicaragua, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Panama might have a quarrel with that claim. Also, the last time Iran started a war, it was called Persia. But other than that, you totally have a point!  (Jan 19, 2012 | post #1144)

Texas prepares for crush of executions

I don't have a rooting interest in either party, and I doubt anyone would particularly care if I did. I do, however, believe that accountability should apply to the state as well as to the condemned -- meaning, that when the state says it's going to follow a protocol, the public has an interest in the state doing just that. Also, for what it's worth, you're absolutely privy to (most) documents in death penalty cases, should you be interested. Here is Judge Frost's opinion: http://www.scribd. com/doc/77920720/L orraine-LI-TRO  (Jan 18, 2012 | post #8)

Well, your rather crass rhetorical questions aside, I do apologize for assuming that you were an expert -- only, you blithely asserted that "judges are all too often bumbling fools", so I didn't feel that the assumption was altogether unreasonable. Anyway.... I'm not sure if you think this ought to matter at all, but the state had established an execution protocol, which it subsequently reneged on. According to the opinion, the deviations from the protocol were not actually trivial, but rather affecting "core components" of the protocol the state had promised to adhere to. But even if the changes were trivial, shouldn't we expect the state to do what it says it's going to do -- or are you suggesting that, when it comes to executions, the standard ought to be 'close enough for government work'?  (Jan 18, 2012 | post #6)

What, exactly, is your problem with the appellate court decision (assuming you read it prior to rendering your expert opinion)?  (Jan 17, 2012 | post #4)

Mich. 2nd Only to Pa. in Juvenile No-Parole Sentences

This observation is so dumb that it's actually difficult to respond to, Bill -- and the fact that you spent any amount of time re-reading anything in order to state it makes me sad.... But Equal Justice Initiative of Alabama made the a report about children sentenced to life without parole nationwide. It discussed, among other issues, racial disparity, which was relevant to the comment I was responding to, whether or not Alabama was mentioned in the original article about children serving life sentences in Michigan. It's sort of like how the name Alabama might not come up in an article about children serving life in Florida, even though the Equal Justice Initiative of Alabama represented Terrance Graham and Joe Sullivan, both sentenced to life without parole in Florida. I hope that clears it up for you.  (Nov 12, 2011 | post #16)

Actually, I did know about the profile-page comment archive (I assume everyone does) and if I felt those comments made me subject to being "caught" in anything, I could've easily changed the settings for my profile, so that those comments weren't public. You see, Bill, this is something you actually have to do, 'public' being the default setting -- which, incidentally, makes it interesting that you claimed ignorance that your "listings " weren't there. But for the sake of argument, I accept your honest ignorance.  (Nov 12, 2011 | post #36)

The response was in response to a comment about racial disparities. I further included a link to the site, which is where you may also find the USSC opinion to which you refer. Of course, I should have made it easier than that, so here: http://eji.org/eji /files/Decision%20 in%20Graham.pdf  (Nov 11, 2011 | post #13)
