Dear Arizona (and Minnesota): There has to be a better way

Mr. Rosario's article is interesting, informative and serious in tone. But he ignores the reality that ICE, a federal agency, has sole jurisdiction over the enforcement of federal immigration laws. Somebody in the state needs to make this point and keep it in view. So there is no concern about 50 city policies, because, again, there is one, federal, policy. Now, as far as practices by individual law enforcement officers who may be engaging in racial profiling (and Mr. Rosario does not mention this word racial profiling at all), that is different from there being a state immigration law. The simple fact established in the Bolton court is that a state may not enact an immigration law. It is true that a number of provisions are still ongoing in Arizona, those provisions which have not been enjoined. But if they can't pass a law, none of those provisions are empowered. I believe many of those provisions have been passed before, and what the focus has been is on changes in SB1070. I must stress that the case has not been decided yet. And Bolton did not announce merely a partial injunction, she totally granted the motion, or am I wrong? I have not completely read the order, but does it read, granted in part, denied in part? Then it was a total victory, no matter what the practices may be. I'll stop now.  (Aug 8, 2010 | post #129)

Pawlenty: English official state language?

I guess it's his way of supporting Emmer. American politicians generally are completely ignoring our treaty with Mexico, called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848). It defined the border, and it also set up a special relation between Mexico and the U.S., one which guaranteed that the Mexicans could retain the character of Mexicans (including speaking Spanish). That's different than the Swedes and Norwegians. You can see excerpts from this Treaty, along with my 5-point proposal for federal legislation on the Mexico-U.S. border at www.stevecarlsonfo  (Aug 4, 2010 | post #9)

Elections matter, and here comes one

This year, I have been inspired by Americans rising up against ObamaCare, a destructive bill passed by Betty McCollum and the Democrats only to cover for the fact they didn't do anything all year. 75% of Missouri voters rejected ObamaCare's mandates, fines and taxes tonight in a statewide referendum. Minnesotans don't want ObamaCare either. I'm the only candidate in the 4th Congressional District who wants to repeal it now, not in five years like Teresa Collett wants. I hope you will consider voting for me for Congress in CD4. My website is www.stevecarlsonfo Thank you.  (Aug 3, 2010 | post #10)
