Kamehameha Schools' hiring of teacher challenged - Hawaii...

As this thread is already quite heated, we will be more assertive than usual in removing offensive posts from it. Posts containing vulgar speech will be deleted entirely -- rather than simply relying on the vulgarity filter -- as will posts in which the writer deliberately attempts to evade the filter. Slurs of any kind will be deleted as usual, as will threats, personal information (about anyone, including the poster), or any post advocating illegal activity. NOTE: Posts quoting posts which contain the above will *also* be removed, regardless of other content. Do NOT respond to the offensive posts, it only encourages them. Simply flag them for our moderation and we will remove it.  (Sep 25, 2009 | post #143)

Controversial photo shows grisly side of war - Hawaii News

State morally obligated to help Micronesians - Hawaii Edi...

We actively work to moderate hate speech and other kinds of trolling on our message boards, primarily through following up on messages flagged by users. The most important thing to remember about online hate speech is that behind many hate-filled posts is simply a childish need for attention. A poorly-behaved child who feels ignored will often resort to screaming and hitting things to interrupt what the adults are doing. If the adults respond to that behavior, it gets reinforced and makes the child feel powerful. But what children like that need is a time-out so they can't be disruptive -- by sending them to their room for instance. So we advise our resident "adults" to click the "Report abuse" button on posts from the "brats," and we'll take care of them. We also advise against responding to the brats directly -- even if they metaphorically kick you in the leg -- as that will only escalate the situation and encourage the brat. After all, adults don't get in fights with bad children, they just tell the person responsible for the child's discipline. And in this case that's us.  (Sep 1, 2009 | post #50)

Flood of misinformation leaves journalist drained - Hawai...

No posts have been deleted from this thread. Because of the way Topix works, many articles and columns have duplicate threads. If you post something and can't find it later, it's in the other thread (unless it was deleted for violating Topix's terms of use).  (Jun 5, 2009 | post #11)

Folks, please don't respond to trolls. They just want attention. Please flag their posts as inappropriate and we will delete and/or ban them. If you reply to them, we have to delete your post, too.  (May 29, 2009 | post #20)

Why do the mods keep closing/deleting anti-Obama threads??

We remove threads that are deliberate inflammatory trolls. When a single subject attracts this much trolling and anger, it also attracts moderation. To all those who are upset by something that's been said, remember that the best response to a troll is no response at all. What they're really after is attention, and when they can't get it, they leave.  (Dec 24, 2008 | post #14)
