Back Pain

loose screws after spinal fusion

You need to call your doctor IMMEDIATELY!!!! I had the exact same thing with my L4-S1 surgery and I ignored it. It was the beginning of failed hardware. If they had put me in a brace and immobilized me I may have not had to have additional surgeries. You need to lay down as much as possible until u talk to your doctor.  (May 19, 2013 | post #104)

Back Pain

How many levels did you have fused and which ones? My issue was that my 8level fusion ended at L4 so the L5 was falling apart from the stress. I went 8 years with no pain or any issues, then I literally had a broken back and didn't know it. It was the worst pain ever! My legs went numb constantly and I was in so much pain I would go into shock. They finally fused all the way to my pelvis and put in anterior cages. My first surgery was in Wichita KS and my Dr. Told me I could do anything as long as it didn't hurt. I told my new doctor that and he about fell over! I had been jet skiing, jogging, and playing extreme sports with lots of impact. I defiantly should not have been and I could have gone the rest of my life without any issues.  (Apr 5, 2013 | post #99)

I am doing really well. I still have some minor pain from time to time, but it is manageable and it does not stop me from doing very much.  (Feb 28, 2013 | post #94)

My Surgeon was dr Jeffery Wood in Houston tx. Look him up. I want though a similar issue, with a much longer fusion. He really knows his stuff. He was able to tell me more than any other dr could. Most drs would not even treat me or said that there was nothing anyone could do.  (Feb 28, 2013 | post #93)

Hi Janie , I had the same thing happen and after several tests they said I was fine. I knew I was not so I was persistent. After my next surgery it was found that I had 4+ screws completely striped in my sacrum. They ends up putting plates in my pelvis and cages in the front of my spine. I am now 1 year post op with minimal daily pain. It is tolerable now but it has been a really long journey.  (Feb 16, 2013 | post #90)

I had the exact surgery !! I ended up having a spinal pelvic fusion with additional cages in the front of my spine. I was in a back and leg brace for 4 months post op. I am coming up on 1 year post op and as of a month ago I am almost pain free. I do have some nerve damage that affects my right foot but I have finally gotten a used to it.  (Oct 5, 2012 | post #64)

let me just say that I am not a doctor, but I do have a medical degree and I have had 4 major back surgeries and I have learned more than I ever thought possible about it. You should be taking 2000 mg of calcium with vitamin D and magnesium everyday post op for a year. It takes that long for the bone graphs to properly fuse. You should also not wait until December to see your doctor. Loose screws do not always show up on an X-ray and may require a CT scan. If you ever start having new pain after a fusion it is never normal and is your bodies way of saying something is wrong. You need to treat your back like it is made of glass as hard as that may having kids.  (Aug 30, 2012 | post #53)

hey Sarah, I believe the clicking noise is loose hardware. I a shocked you doctor let you bike ride within a year post op. it takes over a year for the fusion to be complete an the new bone to calcify. You need to go to your doctor ASAP. Sometimes being put on bed rest can repair the damage but not usually. I went through this exact thing. The lower your fusion is the more stress put on it when you move. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. I have a 6 year old and I am 29, I have a 14 level spinal pelvic fusion.  (Aug 30, 2012 | post #50)

Hey Ken, did you ever see your doctor? I hope you are doing better. I am going for cortisone and hardware injections next Friday. I am quite hopeful.  (Aug 2, 2012 | post #47)

hey Ken. I hope you are doing better. Do you wear a bone stimulator belt. It may help with the bone growth. I have a 12 level spinal pelvic fusion with cages and I have had problems with fusion before. Believe me, I feel your pain. I have spent many nights wondering how I was going to make it another day. There is light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes it just takes longer to see it. Get a good pain management doctor and support group. Gabapentin works well for controlling the nerve pain, and a fentynal patch can help for the chronic pain. -- Catherine.  (Jul 7, 2012 | post #40)
