How The Program Works

Great reporting by the Call. All the facts are there. What? Hope someone can explain what this is all about. Sure there are federal laws but what's this story related to? Another great job by the Tribune company and it's on-the-cheap operation.  (Aug 2, 2009 | post #3)

Poll finds half of Lehigh Valley residents want to build ...

I think the Phantom owners said they would kick in 20% of the cost. That's a "good portion?"  (May 31, 2009 | post #57)

Poll finds half of Lehigh Valley residents want to build ...

DON'T use tax dollars to build another playground for the rich. Let the owners and fans pay, not ALL taxpayers of the Lehigh Valley and the entire state. So ridiculous these tax-supported playgrounds for the rich. And speaking of helping the economy, that's not a given. Most sports facilities feature re-channeled money. If I'm going to a baseball or hockey game in Allentown, it's very doubtful that I'm going to a movie theater, restaurant, or shopping for something I don't need. Same money, which the Lehigh Valley is a bit short of, just moving it around.  (May 31, 2009 | post #56)

Restore the glory to Allentown football

Hold on there "The Truth." You are way off base. "Not So Fast" is right and you can't handle the truth. There are great kids in Allentown schools. There could be more and it's too bad there aren't. If you want to blame the gangs, then put the blame on I-78. Yes, I-78. A quick ride from New York for the gangs to live inexpensively in the Allentown area and still do their crimes in the Lehigh Valley and in NY. As for getting kids out for football and other sports, part of the blame are the parents. Part of the blame is the Allentown School District. When junior high football was shut down, that was the beginning of the end. We are all molded when young; it's too late when a teen enters high school and hasn't played any sports. Start them young and Dieruff and Allen shall have winning teams in all sports.  (Nov 20, 2008 | post #50)

You are not only wrong but you are an AOL customer. Sorry soul. You gotta bail out that, if you they let you loose.  (Nov 17, 2008 | post #23)

Restore the glory to Allentown football

I think Jeep is Chuck's brother; Jeep was Dieruff's head football coach.  (Nov 17, 2008 | post #19)

Restore the glory to Allentown football

You got that right. Kids and parents and others cared about sports in Allentown. Dieruff's gym, Rockne Hall and Allen's gym were jammed for basketball and if you weren't there, Ernie Stiegler had every bounce on 790 AM. Football, the same way. There was a reason to go see these teams play. When Allentown went from junior high schools to "middle schools" and football was down for the count, that did it, for the most part, for Dieruff and Allen. Great to hear Jeep Bednarik is on the issue and that he's doing just fine.  (Nov 17, 2008 | post #16)

Two-way traffic for Seventh Street?

It was wrong in 1958 to change 7th Street to one-way but it is right today to return 7th Street to two-way traffic. Lots of businesses were hurt in '58 and businesses there today shall be helped with the reversal of the Mayor Hock error. A big error.  (Sep 3, 2008 | post #26)

Allentown mayor weighs trash station plan

What a bunch of garbage this idea is, Mr. Mayor. You are certainly one to just stick it to the East Side and the wonderful people who live there. Allentown doesn't need this junk yard. You are going to spend a lot more than you think you're going to save. This is a lose-lose, Mayor. City Council needs to nip this in the bud and close the package tight on this deal.  (Aug 17, 2008 | post #16)

Hockey figure's goal is the Valley

from One Who Knows: The $40 million will NOT com e from tax money. The cost of the baseball stadium is also not borne by the taxpayers. The county or city floats bonds because they can issue them federal tax free on the interest. To One Who Knows>>> guess who pays the interest on those huge, big-money bonds? Taxpayers!  (Jul 28, 2008 | post #58)

Fans not cheered by hot streak

You are correct in everything you say. But costs were less then because the add-ons were way less so the price-tag was way lower. Of course ballplayer's salaries made sense and were we, the fans, could relate. Not anymore. I'll take that over the present. I respect your thoughts and all the others this day. And that's why we live in this great country for freedom of speech and more. Thanks.  (Jul 11, 2008 | post #38)

Fans not cheered by hot streak

Hello Get, Anyone can have anything they like. But don't charge me for it and that's just what has happened with "all" of your examples. Tax dollars paying for amenities that are not needed. Believe me, before all this big money going into stadiums, we all played happily together in the stands, enjoying each other's company and the game on the field or court, and no one complained. Then some folks with money said, "Hey, I want a special area up there to see the game. I'll pay big bucks!" There were no problems before. With so many tax dollars being used for these facilities, people who don't make a lot cannot pay to go to the games. That's my problem with all this. I'm not jealous. I'm just from the ole' school, I guess, that cares about what's happening on the field, not in the suite's fridge, on the counter and the non-cooling AC system. Thanks.  (Jul 11, 2008 | post #36)

Rocker, I'm glad you are a baseball fan. Me, too. A big fan. It's really great being at the ballpark watching games. Sorry to hear your old grade school is going away. They tore down my old grade school in Allentown many years ago. But so many schools are in need of repair. Area school boards don't have the money to what's right for all the schools. Very sad. But, there's a nice stadium on Allentown's east side ready for another pitch and another hit. Glad you enjoy the games.  (Jul 11, 2008 | post #32)

Hey Carl...keep in mind the BIG complaints are coming from warm fans in the suites. That's what started this discussion. My only complaint is with tax dollars used to build pro sports stadiums. Shouldn't be is all I'm saying. And I think a majority of U.S. taxpayers would agree. By the way, not many folks around the country know that "federal " tax dollars in the mix of the ridiculous $611 million cost of Nationals Park in Washington, DC. Quite amazing how all this happens.  (Jul 11, 2008 | post #30)
