Trayvon Martin - Ravenswood, WV

I can see Zimmerman as being an overzealous, wannabe cop type. But that doesn't make him a murderer, and it doesn't even make his actions unreasonable. I don't find it outrageous for a neighborhood watch volunteer to report suspicious behavior (even if it turns out to be completely innocent later). I don't even find it outrageous for the neighborhood watch to confront somebody and ask what they are doing. The problem for the prosecution is that, while it is hard to know exactly what happened, all of the actual evidence coincides with Zimmerman's story. Witnesses say that Martin was on top of Zimmerman. Zimmerman's head was bloody and his nose was broken, corroborating his description of events. Powder marks on Martin's hoodie indicate that the shot was taken at extremely close range, again corroborating Zimmerman's claim that they were in a close and heated struggle. It is not unreasonable to conclude that someone who was battered and bloody, and who shot the other party at close range, could have feared for their well-being when they took the shot. I am sure more details of Zimmerman's report to police will come out soon. As for why Zimmerman was in the situation in the first place. If it is as he described to the 911 dispatcher, he saw a suspicious person wandering around between houses in the rain (in a complex that has had a rash of break-in's). I can see why that would be suspicious, even though it turns out that it was legitimate. He followed this person, who cut between some houses and went out of his sight toward the rear of the complex. Zimmerman got out of his truck (questionable, but not completely out of bounds) to see if he could see where the guy was going. Zimmerman walks behind the houses, but has lost sight of Martin. At this point the 911 dispatcher asks if he is following Martin. Zimmerman says that he is, and the dispatcher says that they don't need him to do that. Zimmerman says "okay" and starts back toward his truck. On the way back to his truck, but still behind the buildings, Martin confronts Zimmerman (according to Zimmerman he jumps him) and the scuffle ensues. What has Zimmerman done in this situation that is so egregious to warrant a charge of murder? Even if Zimmerman verbally confronted Martin, I still don't see anything shocking about Zimmerman's behavior to this point. A little unnecessary maybe, but certainly not criminal.  (Apr 21, 2012 | post #252)

People are getting on Zimmerman, but Trayvon was found less than two hundred feet from his back door. Zimmerman had lost sight of him. It seems that he could have just continued to his house and there never would have been an encounter. Not claiming to know that Martin started the fight, just pointing out that the argument can be made both ways about who sought out who, and it is equally frivolous. It is a sad situation, likely exacerbated by poor behavior from both parties...but a murder case? Even manslaughter would have been a stretch, but at least a more reasonable charge.  (Apr 21, 2012 | post #251)

maybe you should try to be more open minded to what the media feeds you. I think the most unfortunate part of this whole deal is that the media is trumping this case up to demonize gun owners and the right for individuals to protect themselves. Starting to look more and more like the Duke trial every day  (Apr 21, 2012 | post #250)

whats wrong with people that dont believe in jesus???

We have endured two thousand years of Christianity (the unholy creed that says you are damned to hell if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour), fourteen hundred years of Islam ("We love death more than you love life."), thousands of years of the Jews (the self-proclaimed "Chosen People"). Is the world a good and decent place because of these religions? Have they delivered societies of which humanity can be proud? Only the blindest fools would continue to pledge their allegiance to these failed religions. There are thousands of religions, all making radically different claims. Here’s a question for everyone following any of these different belief systems. Is there anything that would stop you believing? That is, would you accept any kind of “falsification principle” being applied to your religion? Is there any “fact” that you would accept as a refutation of your chosen religion? If you cannot formulate such a possibility then doesn’t it mean that you believe blindly? If you proudly state that your faith is "unshakable " then you are not prepared to accept anything as evidence against your beliefs. Therefore, your beliefs constitute an irrational fanaticism, completely divorced from reality. The difference between you and an insane person is merely a matter of degree or opinion since a madman also adheres to unreasonable, unverifiable beliefs that he will never abandon under any circumstances. These three faiths - Christianity, Islam and Judaism - are the central cause of conflict and division in the world They are the absolute enemy of humanity Peace on earth and good will to all men. Ya, right !  (Feb 22, 2012 | post #328)
