DSS had history with parent

I spent years doing that, Daisy Mae. Now it's your turn to go out and get an education, plus additional training in detecting child abuse, so that you can get a job with "dss" saving "alll" these children. NOW. And why are you so hostile? Certainly you must have something to offer besides being mouthy. Protection of children is EVERYONE's business, including yours, Daisy Mae. So get the hell to work and quit running your mouth criticizing others.  (Nov 11, 2008 | post #56)

Celebrity seen about town

You'd think there would be more important stories. A has-been celebrity shopping in Asheville should not be news at all. Good gracious, where is this newspaper's editor??  (Nov 11, 2008 | post #12)

And that, boys and girls, is the problem. People are denegrated, insulted, called names, all in the name of "freedom of speech." I wonder how many of those posting to these forums realize what they are doing and how hurtful they are to other people. The negativity is amazing. I have found that I have to stay away for a couple days fairly frequently in order to shed the negativity and hatefulness. Perhaps for those posters who thrive on the negativity and speaking hatefully to others, it's their idea of "therapy. " But looking at it from a moderator's viewpoint, I would not want that job. You'd be damned if you did, and damned if you didn't. Maybe that's why the newspaper just allows the forums to be a free-for-all.  (Nov 11, 2008 | post #48)

Choice??? Who in the hell would "choose" to be slandered, shut out, disenfranchised, made fun of, and treated as a second or third class citizen?? Homosexuality is NOT a choice, it's genetically determined. You are the one who's been brain washed.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #140)

Wow, Jessica. Lie, libel, slander. It's all right here on the forums, whether the right to do so exists or not. Name-calling seems to be the name of the game.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #32)

The Republican Party is now in the position of having to reinvent itself. It is a far cry from the party of 50 years ago when being Republican meant less Federal government intervention and more local government control. It will be interesting to see how this Grand Old Party turns out in the next couple of years.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #31)

And you know all this how? You are the know-it-all who knows nothing. Keep your guessing to yourself. Deal with facts.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #52)

I began a social work career years ago as a child abuse investigator. A child who has been hit by a human hand will usually show a bruise in the shape of a print or partial print of that hand. I spent several years investigating child abuse for another state. By the way, I'm not now nor ever will be your "pal." And you can be damn sure I know an abused child when I see one, unlike the poorly trained DSS workers of today.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #51)

47% of NC students FAILED math and reading on state exam!

You fail to understand that test scores don't mean much. Some students are poor test takers, but can do the work if given the chance to do so. Because of the "No Child Left Behind" act passed by Congress at the request of President Bush, schools receive their funding based on the students' test scores. So rather than teaching our children the info they'll need to succeed in the world, they teach to the test to be sure that the kids go into those tests already prepped and able to score high enough that their schools will not see a funding decrease.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #66)

Motivation is the main key as to whether or not a student will succeed in college. Test scores are not predictors of academic success. I have taught at the college level for 25 years, and seen students with high SAT or ACT scores fail miserably simply because they lacked motivation and would not do the work. I have also seen students with fairly low SAT, ACT scores succeed spectacularly simply because they were motivated, dug in, got their work done and learned the material.  (Nov 10, 2008 | post #65)
