Muncie third-grader taken into custody

Good points. Also, if a child is enrolled with known medical or behavioral issues, the parents should be required to have an emergency response system worked out with the school and their employer(s) for instances like this so they can be there rather than resorting to police having to be called to handle parenting issues.  (Nov 7, 2007 | post #117)

Ballard grabs upset win in mayoral race

It's a great day in Indianapolis! Congratulations to the Ballards and to the winners of the City-County Council seats. Thank you Mayor Peterson for your service and your gracious concession speach. You are a class act.  (Nov 7, 2007 | post #164)

Who will be Indy's mayor?

Greg Ballard Office sought: Mayor of Indianapolis. Political party: Republican. Address: 3720 Kinnett Lane, Pike Township. Town: Indianapolis. Age: 52. Occupation: Retired, U.S. Marine Corps; business instructor. Employer: Indiana Business College, Northwest Campus. Education: Master's degree, School: Indiana University, Marine Corps University, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, School of Advanced War Fighting. Military experience: Marine Corps, 1978-2001; retired as lieutenant colonel. Marital status: Married. Number of children: Two. As you seem to know nothing about military training, once one achieves a high rank as a career professional it is with specialized leadership training and increased responsibility throughout their military career. At this high level of rank, an officer may be responsible for millions of dollars in resources, equipment, personnel and budgets with close scrutiny and accountability. I'd say Mr. Ballard is WAY more prepared to lead the nations 12th largest city than Mayor Peterson ever has been. Mayor Peterson's career as an attorney did not even compare to this type of preparation for leadership and he has been on the job training for the last 8 years at our great expense.  (Nov 6, 2007 | post #214)

Apparently, you didn't watch the debate when that very subject was addressed. (Ballard takes a stance of welcoming LEGAL immigrants)  (Nov 6, 2007 | post #151)

no... more like a sexist pig. Women serve their country in the military - they have for decades. I was at Spanghahlam AFB Germany & Loring AFB Maine.  (Nov 6, 2007 | post #509)

I'm also a USAF vet. (did not make a career of it, but I have served my country and continue to be a strong patriot.) Just because I served my country, I don't believe it gives me license to break noise ordinance laws and be an obnoxious and offensive neighbor. Caring for others, our laws and a peaceful way of life were primary reasons I served my country.  (Nov 5, 2007 | post #497)

Cities ask bikers to muffle their motorcycles

Seems very passive-aggressive to me to say, "look at all the wonderful things I do for people as a motorcyclist" however, "I don't care how much discomfort I cause people by riding with loud pipes".  (Nov 2, 2007 | post #455)

Negative ad shows mayor running scared

Career military professionals that achieve high ranks are responsible for managing many millions of dollars of resources and people on a daily basis. You, like so many others belittling this valuable experience really don't "get it". What was Bart Peterson's experience managing such a large scope of people, resources and expansive budgets prior to his election 8 years ago? He has been a "trainee " for the last 8 years at our great expense. I have a lot more faith in Greg Ballard's practical experience than continuing to be Bart Peterson's "guinea pig".  (Nov 2, 2007 | post #91)

Negative ad shows mayor running scared

Bart Peterson & the Star's insinuation that Greg Ballard lacks the leadership experience to lead a city is an slap in the face to all current military members and veterans. Those who serve and have served know the training and preparation that long-term and high ranking military professionals receive. Some of our country's most respected leaders had this training and background. Someone please tell retired General Colin Powell that his 35 years of military service did nothing to prepare him for public service and leadership!  (Nov 2, 2007 | post #66)

And now a word from our candidates

Greg Ballard is well educated and was specially trained for increasing amounts of leadership in the military - as is their practice to develop skilled leaders in the upper ranks. How exactly did Bart Peterson's career as a private practice attorney and son of a developer prepare him for leadership of a city? As a veteran, I am very offended by Bart Peterson's flippant dismissal of high-ranking military skills and specialized training. Obviously, he is clueless and knows very little about the kind of leadership training that has shaped many of our country's great leaders.  (Nov 1, 2007 | post #51)

Head-on crash closes Ind. 67

Perhaps it was just south of the 39 intersection where the divided highway ends going toward Paragon (still considered Martinsville area). Hope those involved will be ok.  (Nov 1, 2007 | post #10)

Peterson Plan III reflects mayor's changing priorities

Ballard's plan has been posted for any and all to read on his website since August 26th. Those who say he doesn't have a plan either can't read or have no inclination to learn about the candidates and what they stand for. We don't need uninformed voters at the polls. Please care enough to learn about the candidates before excercising your privilege to vote.  (Oct 31, 2007 | post #100)
