Sidewalks impassable for wheelchairs

I'd like to know who to call to report my apartment complex. I've already complained to the office multiple times, but they do nothing to clear our walk-ways. I'm handicapped, fortunately not in a wheelchair, but I do have to walk using a cane or walking stick. Trying to get to the parking lot from my apartment is hazardous & takes a *very* long time. So it's not just city sidewalks, folks. Even "private property" like complexes don't give a damn about their tenants.  (Feb 14, 2008 | post #10)

City School District keeps schools open despite cold temps

Ginger - So I'm not the only one that thinks the superintendent's motive was money, not concern over the kids' educations. I had heard many years ago that Federal money revolves around 2 factors - how many kids are enrolled in school & how many school days are actually in session. Makes sense to me - he didn't want to lose any Federal funding by shutting down for a day. Considering how many kids & how many schools are in the City - that's a lot of cold, hard cash. Fits with the cold, hard day the students had to deal with. And Sean - the words are spelled angels, not angles & exist, not excist. Maybe you need a dictionary next to your computer. :)  (Feb 12, 2008 | post #38)

New Movie Theatre Rules in Gates

I have a suggestion. Rent a DVD, pop some microwave popcorn, & watch it in the privacy of your own home. You can pause the show to go to the bathroom, get a drink, or whatever. Turn off your phone if you don't want to be interrupted. It's cheaper, more comfortable, & safer. Works for me.  (Feb 12, 2008 | post #22)

Are white people afraid of black people?

Let's see - it's only a hate crime if it happens to a person of color or one of an alternative lifestyle. If a crime happens to a white person or one of normal lifestyle, it's called an unfortunate case of an impoverished, down-trodden race lashing out at the injustice of their situation. Right. Darn straight, I'm afraid of many blacks - not all, I know some great people of color & alternate backgrounds. But when you've had your purse snatched feet from your home by a black youth, been held up at gunpoint by 2 black youths right in front of your door, & watched your brother being assaulted by 2 black men & a hispanic women in front of your door - well, I'd say I have a very good reason to be fearful. Trust me - having a gun held to your head by a kid who couldn't have been more than 15 or 16, makes you just a little bit scared. Oh - & all this happened within a 1-year period. I'm sick & tired of being labeled racist because I take exception to being targeted by these low-lifes. It's OK for them to call me a fat, white bitch & laugh at me, grafitti my building, & generally cause havoc in my neighborhood. But God forbid I should complain about it. The police are useless - taking 2 hours to even respond to problems, including the assault on my brother. I know that there are people of color out there that work hard, provide for their families, & pay their taxes. They help people out, & generally live good lives. Unfortunately, they seem few & far between. Most of the ones I come in contact with are living off the state, making no effort to improve their situations - except by committing crimes, using & selling drugs, & just basically being a blight on society. We don't need to provide more for them. Maybe if we took away a few things, they would wake up & start contributing to society. But no - that's too much like honest work. We've cultivated a society of lazy couch potato families, looking for the government to provide them steak, health care, & their X-boxes, TV's, & I-pods.  (Feb 7, 2008 | post #1246)

Super Bowl at the Open Door Mission

Hey, I have a great idea! If you don't like what somebody says, don't read it! Kind of like turning the channel on the TV if something on it bothers you. Wow - self-censorship, what a concept!  (Feb 7, 2008 | post #18)

what makes you mad?

I second the complaint of those parking in a handicapped space that do not have a permit. Not to mention those that use family permits, but don't have that family member with them. Permits are assigned to the PERSON, not the VEHICLE. And to the person complaining about the shopping carts, sometimes those of us leaving those carts are handicapped & we CAN'T return them. Usually a Helping Hands kid will show up & take it from me, but other times, I have to try to leave it wedged against a post, because I can't get it back into the store or in one of those corrals that are yards away.  (Feb 5, 2008 | post #8)

Scholar Athlete of the Week:

Obviously, Charlotte has changed a lot since I graduated in 1970. What a shame. And before anyone comments, I was only there for my Senior year. I was mostly educated in Florida. 3 years - Lake Worth High School, FL 1 year - Charlotte Jr.-Sr. High 6 months - Sawyer Secretarial School, graduated with Secretarial certificate 32 years - working with the Government American citizen by birth & by right & proud of it. Unfortunately, nowadays that won't even buy me a cup of coffee.  (Feb 5, 2008 | post #6)

When Animals Attack is the only person that I've seen on this forum who's not afraid to tell it like it is. Too bad people can't see that. It seems that if you're not "PC", you can't speak your mind. Go Animals - keep doing what you're doing. You're my hero.  (Feb 4, 2008 | post #19)

Bench trial for man accused of killing innocent bystander...

Mr. Tallyho, I never lived in Norway. I was born and raised in the U.S. and this is my country, right or wrong. I don't choose to remain silent - I could say the same to you. I don't have to remain silent. The only way anything gets done is if people speak up when they think something is wrong. If you can't handle that, oh well - that's your problem. Semper Fi - always faithful. Hmmm, I find it curious that a Marine (or one that uses the Marine Corps creed) would find the concept of free speech so hard to grasp. Isn't that one of the things the Marines have fought so hard to guarantee us the right to exercise?  (Jan 31, 2008 | post #26)
