To those of you who are complaining about the pricing at the smaller stores. Do yourselves a favor and find out how the economic system works in this sort of thing before you go complaining about the small stores and their pricing. The small stores do not get the same kind of pricing the big box stores do. Small stores don't have the billions or hundreds of millions in profit every year to have the buying power to buy in such large quantities that they get a ridiculously lower price than small stores, not to mention Wal-Mart has their own shipping fleets so the don't have near the overhead of having to worry about paying extra shipping costs on all the products they buy. The small stores don't make a whole lot of profit, and their prices are not jacked up. They are the typical mark-up value so they can pay their overhead expenses and keep the store operational with some profit. I know how difficult it is for some of you to take five minutes and do an actual google search to find out if what you think the issues is, is actually correct or not, but deliberate ignorance of something because you don't care if what you say is true or not is deplorable.  (Mar 24, 2012 | post #27)

AT&T DSL throttling ?

Is anyone else in town having issues with the AT&T DSL service. I can't be certain but I think they are throttling down all downloads after so many seconds. The speed tests all come out right where they should be, but after so many seconds the downloads all drop well below the upload speeds. But if they are throttling the lines then the speed tests are no good for checking that. It isn't network site traffic either, It does this consistantly whether it's Amazon, iTunes, Youtube, Netflix, etc.. So is anyone else having these issues, would like to know before I call AT&T and have to deal with them over the phone? Just trying to rule everything out while this modem is still under waranty.  (Mar 19, 2012 | post #1)

Atheist Group

Well that is kind of the idea. A small group who you can discuss these things with who are not going to out you to others or ridicule you for what you do or don't believe. There can be plenty of debate or discussion about the dogma's, beliefs, and tenants of the religions, but the one thing that won't be welcome will be people being ridiculed for lack of knowledge. There is a big diference to me between being ignorant of something, which is one hundred percent okay, everyone is ignorant of something, and deliberate ignorance, people who refuse to find out something because of fear of the unknown.  (Feb 23, 2012 | post #16)

Atheist Group

Quite an interesting read. However, if your experience is anything like what I read in the article you posted I can understand how my original post might have actually like someone starting a church of the Unitarian or Universalist type. Going back and reading that, and from your explanation of your experience, I would have thought the same. But no, what I may wind up starting will most likely be nothing more than a small group, likely less than ten I would imagine. Just a few people who would get to gether for coffee to talk. Many atheists, unfortunately, get ostracized far too easily, not even for sharing their views, sometimes just for existing if people know they are in fact atheist. The idea is just people to hang out with and be abe to talk to them about the things that they usually dare not say in public. I apologize if the former reply to your post seemed rather brash, but it looked as though you were trying to throw a label to something that was in fact not really something to be labeled. Although I would be quite interested in finding out more about your experiences, maybe if the group starts and you are around here you would like to come you would be more then welcome.  (Feb 23, 2012 | post #15)

Abortion Debate - Fort Scott, KS

I do not like abortion. But those of you who so loudly stand up against abortion are usually in favor of nothing that helps to prevent abortion. @Sadly.... Just because the government does not outlaw abortion like you want does not mean abortion is sanctioned (meaning official permission or aapproval) by the government. That is like saying that because the government is not watching every criminal in the United States that crime is "sanctioned " by the government. Things like abstinence only sex education does little in the way of helping. Real knowledge fact based sex education would be a start. Easier access of contraceptives. And stopping this garbage that some pharmacists refuse contraceptives or birth control based on his religious beliefs then he needs to be fired. Also stopping this disinformation that birth control is harmful to women. More research in to better or even superior forms of birth control than we have today. Most importantly, regardless of the fact that I don't like the idea of abortion, or if you do, or if it goes against your religious beliefs, or whatever,...No one has the right to tell a woman what she can or can not do with her own reproductive organs.  (Feb 20, 2012 | post #6)

Atheist Group

I would still like to hear others thoughts on starting an atheist group here in Fort Scott, maybe some reason to go through with it or not. Just something simple, like coffee and conversation. It might even be able to start as a chat room online and progress from there.  (Feb 20, 2012 | post #11)

Atheist Group

I see someone is having a field day with the "Judge It" buttons. You would think if they were actually going to go through and take the effort to mark all the posts having anything to do with atheism, they would actually have something to say. But I guess it is easier to put a checkmark into a little box and pretend they are acomplishing something, rather than actually trying to have a discourse over an issue and type out something intelligible.  (Feb 20, 2012 | post #10)

Atheist Group

I am sorry you had that expersience. Unfortunately you will find people that can't have a rational conversation in all types and all groups, there are always a few.  (Feb 20, 2012 | post #9)

Atheist Group

Actually, no, Unitarian Universalists still hold to allot of christian sybolism, have tennats and consider themselves a religion or church. Some even have ministers and most of them are still a theology looking for spiritual enlightenment. Atheism has no dogma, no tenants, and no world view. It is simply not having a belief in a god or gods, that's it. It is nothing more than a position held on the question, "Do you believe in a god?" So before you label something you really should take your own advice on looking things up, and if you had bothered to look it up yourself in the first place you would have known that.  (Feb 20, 2012 | post #8)

Atheist Group

Am thinking someone should start an atheist group here in Fort Scott. Some simple gathering that lets those who are agnostic or atheist know they are not alone in this town. Could even have discussions with theists who have questions about their faith and are having trouble following or believing what their religious institutions tell them. Am open for discussion on this and would like to hear thoughts.  (Feb 18, 2012 | post #1)
