Terry Jones: Florida pastor linked to bombing protests

Heard a great artist sing about Terry Jones last night. "There's a guy in Florida who's really starting to piss me off." - James McMurtry http://www.youtube .com/watch?v=seqma XWC5-U  (Sep 15, 2012 | post #2)

Are straight people born that way?

What an interesting article! Warning: it is intended for rational people and should not be read by those who deny science.  (Mar 22, 2012 | post #2)

Teaching Gay History in California

A question: How would you defend or explain to a school board the new Ca law requiring that teachers include the contributions of LBGT individuals? I want more than "because it is the law." I will be in a position to do exactly that in a couple of weeks and am looking for additional ideas. I plan to include arguments about making schools safer for all. Bigots, bible-quoters, and haters need not reply as I just scroll past your drivel anyway. Thanks, in advance, for any help.  (Feb 2, 2012 | post #6883)

Colbert and Stewart do what fundies and tea-party people fear most: they get people to think. They expose the hypocrisy, they use logic within humor, and thus expose the truth. They are hated because they are effective. Maddow is a different story. Using her own intellect, she invites people from the right onto her show and engages them in informed debate. Unlike Fox, she freely admits that she it promoting a point of view. I love it when people come onto her show underestimating her, thinking she is just a cute little lesbian, and she reveals how ignorant and uninformed they are. It is as if they can't believe she has a doctorate in poly sci and was a Rhodes scholar. Newt has been on her show several times, and while they will never agree, he treats her with respect and she responds in kind.  (Jan 30, 2012 | post #610)

This is true. But there was the "spontaneous " set of rallies shortly thereafter. Fox News was spending a lot of time reporting about it BEFORE it happened, and then it was revealed that Fox producers had been involved in organizing the rallies. When confronted with the facts, Rupert Murdoch himself admitted it was wrong.  (Jan 30, 2012 | post #608)

So, you are ignorant. No shame in that, as the ignorant can learn. Just "use the google" and see what Murdoch has been up to in England.  (Jan 30, 2012 | post #607)

Snyper, I think you know that I am an ally. I am also generally in agreement or at least alignment with your opinions. It is understandable that you would be very skeptical of any sources cited by Ronald, but you should know that Moynihan, in addition to being US Secretary of Labor, was an academic and his report was based on research. Check out http://en.wikipedi a.org/wiki/The_Neg ro_Family:_The_Cas e_For_National_Act ion Like the Coleman report, Obgu's "Acting White" hypothesis, and other important contributions of that era, the report has been misused, but the fact remains that it is a real and significant addition to the literature concerning racial and economic issues in the US. It was a quite liberal professor (who is African-American) at one of the most liberal graduate schools in the US who brought the Moynihan report to my attention. Of course, for people who want to keep up on research and theory, concepts such as the "poverty trap" http://en.wikipedi a.org/wiki/Poverty _trap and "sterotype threat," (google the term or Claude Steele) not to mention critcal race theory should be read. I see a parallel between how some people read and interpret the bible and how they cherry pick social research and theory. Rational people will entertain ideas counter to their current paradigm and subject them to tests of validity in addition to internal logical consistency. In other words, open-minded people don't just look for and settle for evidence that supports their world view.  (Jan 29, 2012 | post #6752)

Isn't that the same Fox news that created the Tea Party? Remember? Fox news producers went all over the country and created the "spontaneous " and "grass roots" rallies that launched the Tea Party. Let the denials begin...  (Jan 28, 2012 | post #591)

NC gov's exit shakes up vote on gay marriage ban

I hope that marriage equality supporters learned from Prop. 8. There was a complacency here after the early polls showed it would fail, and a feeble response when the Mormons and others launched their fear-based campaign. Where was the positive portrayal of our gay neighbors and friends, of families where various members happened to be gay, etc.? With so much intelligence and creativity in the gay community and among the allies, there should have been a much better effort to reach the people in the middle.  (Jan 28, 2012 | post #18)
