I have done a whole thesis on male/male love through the ages. If enough of you pester me about it, I will post it somewhere for your perusal. Peace, Sean (Dec 29, 2009 | post #105)
As far as ancient greece goes here it it: In the past, same sex relationships were ubiquitous in various cultures. Here we will focus on Ancient Greece. In Ancient Greece male-male relationships were considered so vital to the proper entrance into adulthood, that if a youth was NOT chosen, it was thought that something was wrong with him, that he was somehow undeserving of such a mentoring. The older man would educate the youth in ALL facets of adult life, including but not limited to: intellectual/emoti onal/martial/philo sophic mentoring, but also in most (not all) cases, the relationship was sexual as well. The relationship ended when the youth started to grow a beard. The male-male relationship was not the only duty of the adult male. There were a lot of demands on an Ancient Grecian's time. He must marry, sire children, manage his business affairs, and mentor a deserving youth. Most important of all, he was absolutely expected to defend Greece's honor in the event of war. This type of expectation of Grecian men was thought to be a hallmark of the dominate Grecian male. (Editorial Board, 2000) What this shows is, how different notions of masculinity also directly influences how the society at large views the male-male sexual relationship. In Ancient Greece, the male-male sexual relationship was thought to enhance, and in fact, propel an upcoming adult right into a proper adult male citizen. In our times, any sort of male-male sexual relationship is thought to be less than the perfect picture of masculinity. Yeah, it's separate but equal...for now. One day, we will have all the same rights and responsibilities as the str8s. It's inevitable. There is nothing the Hesed's of the world can do about it.....hahahahahahahahahahaha! (Dec 12, 2009 | post #43)
hahahahahaha....I usually (as I'm sure you can guess), refer to the binary minded as those religious folks who simply won't see another angle. But, yes, it does, like most things lend itself to a plethora of things....lol I don't really give a rats butt, what your beliefs are, I actually honor your beliefs. What I can't handle is when some of the beliefs you have are discriminatory against others, (which in and of itself if fine....this is America after all), and you try to legislate them into law. If you believe marriage should be between one man and one woman, FRAGGING FINE!!! What you don't have the right to do is to impose that belief on others that don't share it or are directly affected by it. Put yourself in my shoes, what if you found the perfect mate for you, who just happens to be the same gender, and you can't marry them, because of the legislation of others beliefs upon you. How would you feel? That is really what this is all about. It's NOT about religion, it's about personal liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In the words of Alastair Crowley "do what thou wilt, save ye harm none". (Dec 5, 2009 | post #15120)
Why can't all discussions on these "hot-button " issues get discussed like this? If I could actually get intelligent discussion vs. religious rhetoric, we might actually get somewhere in our debates. It's really hard to talk to a binary minded person. I have of course blown up on a few people here, but usually only after repeated attempts at discourse above that of rote presentations of bible verses. (Dec 3, 2009 | post #15118)
Ok cool. But why the ordeal? As government workers, why cant the police there just do the right thing? Why do they have to be goaded? (Nov 29, 2009 | post #2)
Yes, I suppose that is how I can come across, blithely going down the road of life, answering to none. But that is a romantic notion, not really based in reality. For you see, I DO care, I DO love, and the God/Dess I worship is the Spirit of Love, and thus my morality comes. Yes, mans laws say, "don't murder, don't steal...etc..etc ", and on some level, I could cite that as the only reason why I don't kill (the xtians have almost pushed me to that point....believe you me!). But, I also don't do it, for the pain it would cause the living relatives of the slain. I don't do it, because, even though I might want to kill, killing (except in hunting for food), is the opposite of Love. And that's it. If it would upset the Spirit of Love, I try to adhere to that. I am human and don't always succeed, but, I am morally bound to my value system as you are to yours. (Nov 29, 2009 | post #15114)
That is the difference between you and I, I know what I do sexually is NOT a sin, even if the buybull says it is. I am not xtian so the xtian morality prison means nothing to me. (Nov 26, 2009 | post #15098)
No, we don't believe in hell, but some do believe in a "corrective " sort of action from Spirit if they have been just totally nasty in their life....lol What we pagans do have is a living and breathing relationship with Karma, whatever you send forth, returns a minimum of 3x. And that's just what I know from my own experience, there are forms of Paganism that is so totally alien to me, that almost make no sense, yet, due to their Earth based cosmology they still qualify as Pagan (Shinto being a prime example). War brewing? Hon, it's here already. The problem is I don't get why. Why does it matter to the right wing nut cases what I do? The original GOP party was one of less government in favor of more sovereignty of the people. It was THE party of the people. In fact, based on that ideology, I used to be a republican. Then, the xtian fringe took over the GOP. Then all of a sudden, it was no longer about less government, but a fundy fueled movement about MORE government telling us what we can and can't do. Those who oppose us, don't have to like us, hell, they don't even have to lift a finger towards us at all. However, they should treat us, as they themselves would like to be treated. We hear all the hysterical shrieking of the conservatives, like, "spreading homosexuality in schools." Homosexuality is not a contagious disease, you either are or are not. Do they REALLY think it can spread thusly? REALLY? Even if they believe marriage should be between one man and one woman -a personally held belief- what gives them the right to put that on those who believe differently? Jeeze, I just don't get it. Is it money? Is it fear? WHAT?!?!?! (Oct 3, 2009 | post #24)
OMG! I wonder how many icky/stinky str8 boys will be whacking thinking of getting arrested by her and another female...lol (Sep 17, 2009 | post #8)
Why do you say this? I don't get the relationship of the slave auction shite, and this thread. (Sep 16, 2009 | post #690)
Um, my trite reply was a feelbe attempt at humor. Sorry. (Sep 16, 2009 | post #686)

That all are the same and equal. Those who believe they are somehow superior to another, simply need to travel a bit and see the folly of this for themselves. When a woman/man looks upon her/his brother/sister and sees an enemy, the war will continue.
