Lesbian Couple Humiliated By FL DMV While Trying To Chang...

Oh, Vance1. Did you miss the lesson in your government classes in school on the different types of government? You can't be Imperialist and at the same time be Communist/Socialis t. I learned that from my VERY right-winged teacher in high school.  (Nov 5, 2011 | post #153)

Dear Unknown Solider: Lesbians are not perverts anymore than you are. There are perverts who are soldiers and perverts who are lesbian, but not all soliders and lesbians are perverts. Dear Pfell: You know not what you speak. There are way more of us who are employed and paid well for the work we do in this country. As a percentage, very few gay people are on welfare. As for "extortion, " you are just adding fuel to the lawsuits that are legitimate.  (Nov 3, 2011 | post #14)

First of all, this was in merry old England where there is no equivalent to the US First Amendment. So all those who are going to say "see, they are attacking Christians," can go jump. Secondly, I am Christian and I happen to be gay, so his beef with having the ceremonies in a church reveal his lack of knowledge and understanding.  (Oct 23, 2011 | post #5)

Gates Tells Marine There Is No Opt Out Over DADT Repeal

“The reality is that you don’t all agree with each other on your politics, you don’t agree with each other on your religion, you don’t agree with each other on a lot of things,” he added. “But you still serve together. And you work together. And you look out for each other. And that’s all that matters.” -- Secretary Gates. This is the very best response that anyone can give. Thank you, Mr. Secretary. My respect for you has grown immensely.  (Jun 5, 2011 | post #3)

Young Gay Student Stands Up for Teacher

Dear Mjolnir, Do you believe in my freedom to marry the one adult human that I choose to marry? If not, then by your definition, you are among those liberals of whom you speak -- people who stand for abolition of all personal freedoms. It is the republicans who have lost their way by fighting against the personal freedom of the LGBT peoples to marry (within their own churches) and be recognized by society as married for all legal interests. I was a teacher for almost 10 years. There is a time and a place for discussion of topics that are not withing the schedule of the lesson at hand. Any discussion outside of the lesson at hand is a detractor from the educational process and must be quickly and appropriately removed. A discussion of one's religious beliefs regarding ANYTHING should be left to a class on religious studies, not mathematics, language arts, etc. Did the teacher handle it well? Perhaps, perhaps not. We weren't there so we will never really know. Was the teacher correct in putting a stop to a conversation that was not in the lesson? Yes -- and it did not impinge anyone's right to freedom of speech to do so. As for the confederate flag belt buckle, the teacher was following the lead of the district leadership in determining that the presence of the symbol in school was a detractor to the educational process. Does that symbol bother me? No -- I am not intimidated by the confederate flag because I remember it for some of the positives that it represented (not slavery, but the independent spirit of man). Please don't paint everyone with the same brush stroke. Not all of us liberals are trying to accomplish what you describe. From our side it feels to us much the other way, but I know that not all conservatives agree on every area so I do not blame them all for the problems we have -- just the ones whose names are signed to the laws that prohibit my freedom to serve my country and marry the one I love. Can't we all just learn to get along???  (Nov 21, 2010 | post #11)

Young Gay Student Stands Up for Teacher

I read the article in detail, twice. I do not see anything that says the teacher "asked" the student about his beliefs. The student brought up the issue regarding the purple shirts people were wearing versus the confederate flag belt buckle another student was wearing. It really helps when you read the article carefully before commenting.  (Nov 18, 2010 | post #8)

Rev Ray, Yes, being gay is an act of nature and being Christian is a choice. Please do not lump all of us Christians in with the ones you are describing in your statement. Some of us Christians are even gay. Some of us Christians do not hate, instill fear in our children, or practice brain-washing. Some of us have actually learned to "love your neighbor" and not wave our fists. Thank you.  (Nov 15, 2010 | post #3)

Anything worth doing is worth doing correctly. Perhaps you have heard that before. If Topix "isn't important enough to spend the time and effort . . . " then perhaps you would be better served spending your time and efforts elsewhere in an area that is appreciative of your input. After reading your input on a number of the articles and reading the responses of others, your posts are not normally accepted by the majority here as "informative and educational." Just makes me wonder why one would want to continue beating their head against the wall like that. Here's hoping you find something more worth your talents.  (Oct 3, 2010 | post #15)

A very good boss once said, "Check your work before you submit it, otherwise people will think you are ignorant." Can you agree with that principle?  (Oct 2, 2010 | post #13)

I'm sure that @CDMelton understands that there is no LAW which establishes a national holiday for the celebrations mentioned. However, our entire national economy and our national culture turns flips for those two days (along with a few others). Everything comes to a complete standstill and very, very few businesses remain open on these days, so I completely understand when they are called "national holidays". There is more than one way to define "national. " By the way, it would be wise to check your spelling before you pronounce someone ignorant.  (Oct 1, 2010 | post #7)

I am gay, this is me. This is who I am, this is what I am

Streaker"(nou n) a person who removes all clothing (except for perhaps shoes and socks) and runs through a crowded place. Used in a sentence -- The streaker ran through the graduation ceremonies eliciting both laughter and shrieks of disgust. Origin -- US English colloquial speech. MT tea party removes leader after anti-gay post

Yet many of the tea-party folks love Sarah Palin and were involved in recent "The Call" activities in DC and California. I understand that not all right-wing religious folks are tea-partiers and not all tea-partiers are right-wing religious folks. However, I find a major overlap between the two groups. (Mathematical term is "Intersection ") With that in mind, I have to judge each individual tea-partier on his/her own words and actions.  (Sep 7, 2010 | post #16)

Target Apologizes For Minn. Political Donation

While I agree with you in spirit, the actuality is that corporations now have the legal right to contribute to political campaigns as part of a "freedom of speech" claim they won in the US Supreme Court this year. I was greatly disappointed in the ruling. Get ready to see many, many more corporations promoting various political campaigns as the voting season nears.  (Aug 5, 2010 | post #8)

Sign the DOMA Petition

Um, I'm not a legal beagle, but doesn't this judge's rulings only affect the state of Mass and their marriage laws? At the very most, this judge's ruling would only be enforceable in his district. Remember that we have one district (9) that has indicated that has ruled that DADT is wrong. We need a SCOTUS ruling to make it nationwide.  (Jul 8, 2010 | post #5)
