Should evolution be taught in high school?

I love that movie too, I have it on tape and watch it if I'm restless at night. :) (what does IMO mean, by the way?)  (Tuesday Jun 24 | post #19030)

There was a guiding force, but it was nothing so miraculous as the "hand of god" or such: what works, works. More efficient, stronger, faster, or more specialized individualswill succeed over weaker individuals, and the same can go for entire species. Additionally, the conditions for fossil formation are generally tough to come by, except for in certain locations such as tar pits or...sudden sandstorms, or such occasions that would preserve the body without letting it be destroyed by scavengers. If we can't find many humanoid fossils, that's just a tribute to their rising levels of intelligence and ability to avoid such deathtraps.  (Tuesday Jun 24 | post #19028)

Yeah, but didn't Morgan Freeman already do God? Alan Rickman was particularly cast as the Voice of God in Dogma... But I still can't quite see it being that way.  (Tuesday Jun 24 | post #19026)

Microbes - did they learn or evolve?

Yeah, but if the drug is applied, it kills off all the competition, making things more favorable for the bacteriathat resists and resulting in a "pure" resistance strain.  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #9)

Intelligent Design: Coming To A State Legislature Near You

It is an actual biological term, but is is one of a set of four genes that are said to code for behavior, depending on whether they act in favor of their own interest or in favor of other individuals. The full set is: 1) the Selfish gene, where the individual is concerned only for itself, benefiting any individual that inherits it; 2) the Altruistic gene, where the individual disregards itself to help others, and benefits the children of parents posessing this trait; 3) the Cooperative gene, where the individual serves the interests of itself and others, benefitting the community, and 4) the Spiteful gene, where the individual does things that benefit neither it nor those around it, and "has thus far remained unobserved except in Homo sapiens". Maybe they aren't exactly genes, I don't think I have read the entire chapter yet, but I did happen to read that part in my biology textbook.  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #12641)

There is evolution, and then there is the theory of evolution. Evolution has already been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The theory of evolution, as in how it happens or such, still has some debate, but it has to work somehow. So, there is a proper theory of evolution, we just don't know exactly what it is yet.  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #18941)

I knew that, but it doesn't seem to me to be connected to the discussion...  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #12637)

UNLESS the altruistic gene d...Oh, wait single celled organisms. --Oh, I know! Because single-celled organisms are capable of increasing in population relatively rapidly, especially in the presence of adequate nutrients. The altruistic gene might have started as a "rush at unfamilliar objects" gene, and the first one rushed at something that happened to be a food supply, and replicated, so before it encountered its first threat there was already a sizable population. Of course, it is merely a guess.  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #12636)

Woah, there; I didn't say anything about what I think of the Quran, Just what I saw of this one guy on television. If you want to know what I think, then I'll tell you: I don't think anything. I haven't read it, and I don't even follow Jesus as a prophet, so I just don't judge it. All I think is that it is probably just as likely to be right (or wrong) as anything else out there. Personally though, I am not really sure about trusting anybody who ever claims to be the LAST prophet, since humans generally can't see the future well enough to be able to tell. Unless the world was ending as they said it; then they ight be right, but...I digress. No offense, and with all due respect, I just cannot currently accept that the Quran is the one and true word of the god.  (Jun 22, 2008 | post #18925)

FIRE OFFICER NUGENT !

Not blaming the victim here; we're blaming the criminal. If it happens to me, I wouldn't be trying to struggle, so there would be no reason for this to happen.  (Jun 21, 2008 | post #7)

Yes, that is one of the main lines of thought about fruits. Another is that the fruit may be sweet to entice an animal to carry it off, while the seed is either dropped or ingested. Some seeds have special coatings that allow them to survive the digestive tract, and when they come out, they have their own fresh pile of fertilizer to grow in.  (Jun 21, 2008 | post #12569)

You...aren't keeping track of what we're talking about, are you. It's not about what it looks like, it's about the changes...the moths...remember? I would rather have a world government not ruled by any one group in particular than the rule over a group of people who can't even follow their own morals. Or choose to ignore them. I don't think that we have any African Americans today who were once slaves, but we have a lot of families whose ancestors were slaves that are a lot poorer off from it. Sharecropping came after slavery, and votes were somehow denied until the 1960s. Don't blame me for how you decide to waste your time. I think you could have done it without the gun though, seriously, and maybe have taken an umbrella instead...But hey, hindsight's 20/20.  (Jun 20, 2008 | post #18903)
