ElDo Needs... a cover-band in residence

The free market can't create libraries or public schools or public utilities, but without them ElDo would be a worse mess. One aspect of the food analogy that I forgot is that there are thousands of popular 'side-dishes' from the past 100 years that nobody can enjoy anymore except on the web-- bands that cover them don't even try to capture their original energy. A resident band would be like a live song-library.  (Feb 3, 2015 | post #17)

ElDo Needs... a cover-band in residence

Okay, let's test that analogy... Say ElDo is trying to be South Arkansas's Exotic-Eating Capital. And this is an alternate universe where very few chefs can make a living, but many keep doing it for love. So we plan to do it by inviting in famous exotic chefs for one-night blowouts of exotic cuisines. But we can't afford the A-list chefs that people really want to try, and the B- and C- list names we can afford don't draw the scale of crowds we need. (To make the analogy work, imagine that we only have a few local restaurants that aren't really making any money because they're expected to create their own cuisines in their spare time.) So we hold worldwide auditions and subsidize a resident team of better-than-decent chefs who do a wide range of low-cost classic side-dishes and desserts that are always a treat, and are capable by themselves of drawing a decent crowd every weekend. So if the featured chef/cuisine on any given weekend doesn't excite much interest, people will still come because they know they can skip the quinoa and tabbouleh and fill up on great cheap mac and cheese. We know we can find versatile chefs because we're promising to solve their making-a-living problems, so they can devote full time to getting better at it.  (Feb 1, 2015 | post #11)

ElDo Needs... a cover-band in residence

South Arkansas maintains a fine symphony orchestra with about a HUNDRED performers on a budget of a half-million a year. So mostly they're doing it for love while holding down other fulltime jobs. The world is full of talented and versatile musicians who'll jump at the chance to play anything, anywhere for a decent living. Musicians don't have to be stuck in one or two genres, they love all kinds of music and most would love the challenge of trying to duplicate any music they enjoy. There will be a wide range of talents, but we'd get to pick and choose. (Forget trying to find one band already proving themselves-- better to audition each member separately.) You can't make much of a living anywhere as a musician unless you regularly churn out original hits. This is a minuscule fraction of the talented versatile musicians who wish it weren't so. If they're not locked down to making hits, they'll have that much more freedom to master the thousands of great, fun, popular hits of others in the past. Now El Dorado is eager to spend millions to build a reputation as the Festival City, that people for 100 miles around will come to for a pleasant evening's entertainment. Will they take a chance on a band they've never heard of, or a play, or other events? To win them over for taking that chance, we need to be able to guarantee them a good time, so open _every_ event with a short free concert by our resident cover-band...  (Feb 1, 2015 | post #9)
