Bankruptcies

I agree there are many that lives way beyond their means. I have known people with credit balances that would make you shiver. Then again living within the means is questionable. I have survived layoffs, however, due to living according to wages filing bankruptcy was the sole solution. A financial advisor will claim one weeks pay should cover shelter expenses. This includes contributing in retirement accounts of 10% minimum. We can look at Soc Sec and see the numerous trends. By 2030 this will be thing of the past (history). This is another example of an unforeseen event that will effect many regardless of financial finesse! We all know the economy today, these jobs are simply no longer there. I can remember janitors at Delco and Rochester Products earning $13 plus per hour! I can also vouch entry jobs 30 years ago payed $7 per hour and minimum wage was $3.10! Back then I bought a new car every 4 yrs and my last new car was in 1999. The typical prevailing wages today is much less.  (Nov 17, 2010 | post #6)

Bankruptcies

That is one of the dumbest statements. People that has lost jobs due to; layoffs, downsizing, etc., is not what you call dumb or losers. Bankruptcy in most cases is utilized to save homes or assets. Reality is this is the only solution for those that lost $40k plus per year jobs. The jobs available is found to pay less than the norm - less than 25k per year. Creditors in most cases act in their interest for profits, thus the temporary shortcomings is turned to their benefit and not the consumer! (Call your mortgagor or loan company that has lien on vehicle that you can't pay - it takes a phone call for an immediate repo and it takes 30 days to commence a foreclosure) This is why you may notice that the new trend is single wage earner families - usually the female is carrying the family debt or the bread winner! For several decades blue collar was the sector effected. It now effects white collar. Which we will see many educated or with skilled trades, working a mediocre job, or a couch potato. As for the economy - Rochester was ranked #10 for poverty! Since 1985, welfare experienced a 300% increase. Of course we can thank our political leadership for this.  (Nov 17, 2010 | post #2)

Who do you support for Governor in New York in 2010?

Idiots are born every day. Since you have no idea of what you are talking about - here's a little insight! I'm on SSD and dont get a dime from social services or assistance. Now, social security is based on earnings...the more payed into the higher the benefit! Once a certain rate threshold is met - you're on your own! As for welfare - welfare is for the needy or temporary assistance, however, there is a double standard. Not everyone qualifies. Many unemployed with expired benefits, found due to assets owned or retirement savings were turned away! Typically the working class in general has many obstacles, which takes months for a solution or benefits! The continuous conflict in welfare is the abuse, which you obviously support!  (Nov 15, 2010 | post #2796)

How do we deal with the city problem?

Rhonda, I hate to bust your bubble - city tax has no bearing on the suburbs, that is if you own property in the city limits. Payroll state tax covers the entire state - roads, highway, bridges, welfare, etc. Which the tax is based on earnings.  (Nov 15, 2010 | post #68)

Huge Hike in Healthcare for some Kodak Retirees

Kodak was a way of life for my family members and relations. Even tough this article is referencing Kodak, it is common with other major employers! Last year due to health conflicts, I became disabled for respiratory conflicts. Due to employer was in a different state (Ohio), the policy was not honored in NYS. The option was Medicaid, which was like pulling teeth to get. This past Feb I finally was able to get it! The only reason I did get medicaid is that Social Security - SSD was approved! Well, due to the rate from SSD, there is a monthly spend-down of $408 per month! Social Security is based on earnings, thus is only one third of monthly wages. It is calculated by NYS that $1300 mthly is plenty...! In other words - no assistance is needed or warranted. I have neighbors on welfare that is living like kings...!  (Nov 15, 2010 | post #56)

vote to eliminate welfare

You're right - there is a fine line between needy and outright laziness. The people that are medically disabled - handicapped, retardation, etc., are the needy. The one of many faults includes the families that are generation to generation recipients. The other side of the coin is too many on welfare utilize children as a tool for more in benefits. It is claimed that a family of 4 receives approximately $38k in annual benefits! The public is getting too liberal on this funding. The problem is this factor is appealing to both the lazy and unskilled wage earner. Welfare needs to be restructured and only the human necessities as a benefit. Reduce the benefits - the abusers will have to get a job or settle for less. Due to lack of jobs many from the working class that supports welfare in taxes, found they wouldn't qualify due to asset ownership. Thus they continued to expend their retirement or savings, or forced sale of assets! Where is the justification in this?? There is an obvious double standard in the system, which is getting more scrutiny from the public! Well, due to the economy we will see changes...! There are 2-states Texas and California that has a possible solution for this high growth conflict. They initiated a provision in their welfare system - all recipients not medically disabled and with supporting proof has two years to secure employment or education for employment. Since both states are agricultured, there are a number of state owned farms. Thus after 2 years on benefits recipients will find themselves working for the benefits. Legislation in California is now seeking to remove the child bearing rights to long term recipients - recipients long term isn't considered responsible adults when on public assistance! States like; Maine, Connecticutt and New York are usually found following the trends of California! The bottom line is - free handouts is coming to a head! If nothing else - states will become self sufficient!  (Nov 15, 2010 | post #87)

Who do you support for Governor in New York in 2010?

I am in support of any that will actually perform in their position. NYS is going broke and our leadership up to the present has done absolutely nothing. NYS has the same conflicts found in other states, however at a different level! The two primary concerns should be - lack of jobs and the numerous conflicts in the welfare system! First, lets take a look at the conflicts in welfare! There are many resources on the net for those that desire to research the following facts: 1) Understaffing And Caseworker Qualifications 2) The High Growth In New Applicants For Welfare 3) Rochester Was Ranked #10 Nationwide For Poverty 4) High Growth - Long Term Generation To Generation - Born, Raised & Offsprings On Benefits 5) Rapid Population Growth While On Benefits 6) Children Utilized As A Tool For A Benefit/s 7) Approximately 40% of the cases is receiving benefits under false pretense. Lack of manpower prevents investigation of suspected cases! **Keep In Mind A Family Of 4 Receives Approx $38k In Annual Benefits. This is found to be appealing to the unskilled recipient. This is within the poverty threshhold and in most cases the working class unemployed will not qualify due to assets owned. There is a provisional double standard built into the system.**  (Nov 14, 2010 | post #2772)

Resolution elusive in debate over NY cigarette tax

NYS sees potential revenue and desires to receive taxes. We need to keep in mind this taxation is not the typical tax for a standard commercial business. You will not find their products stocked at the retail outlets like; Wegmans, Walmarts, Rite Aid, etc. These purchases is accomplished on private property - and in the form of a self governed community. Which is in compliance to the contract/treaty when iniated. This community was given certain rights in reference to treaties. This treaty to the american indian is the same as our well known "Bill Of Rights" and "Constitution al Rights". No state should have the power to violate any of these provisions!  (Nov 14, 2010 | post #5)

Food Stamps Feeding 1 in 8 Americans in 2010

What you say is true however, we have all lived next or near people on welfare or drawing benefits. I currently have a neighbor on welfare. These people are in their 40's. Both him and her can not hold jobs due to drugs/alcohol abuse or desires not to. When they do work it is strictly off the books. She has 2-kids not living with her and at college under the state program. The point is welfare pays just under $600 in food stamps, pays all of rent, and pays her $68 per month for gas and job hunting! Her live-in will not take a job due to back child support! Neither one job hunts and yet able to get drunk or high by dinner time! They will tell you unless they get a job offer that affords better than what they have - it doesn't take a genious to blow an interview mandated by welfare or goto work intoxicated! This is a prime example of the abuse. Keep in mind welfare doesn't know he lives with her. This past summer he was painting houses which was only 2 or 3 days a week under the table. The bottom line is they eat well and taken care of by state funds, and in reality living well! This includes the kids in college at no cost! I'm 53 and over the years - I came across two other cases similar. It is claimed that social services claim approx 40% of the recipients on welfare is receiving benefits under false pretense. Due to under staffing and competence of caseworkers this scenario will continue! Take it one step farther - one neighbor constantly turns them in to the welfare fraud dept, and yet no followup or investigation...!  (Nov 13, 2010 | post #155)

Food Stamps Feeding 1 in 8 Americans in 2010

Thats the way of the system. I'm on SSD - Social Security Disability. Due to the amount, I have a spend down on medicaid of $408 per month. They have it calculated so every dime is accounted for with $0.00 left. Instead of paying medicaid the $408 per month, I buy prescriptions as needed. If ever hospitalized - I'm done anyways...! The hospital and doctors can fight over the social security funds. In other words - even though disability is a third of my monthly wages when working, in the eyes of the state it is plenty! My rent is as low as it can get without living in the ghetto. This is another example of how the working class that pays taxes and when in need.....  (Nov 13, 2010 | post #152)

Every time the Feds are in the crapper for their wrong decisions, they quickly look at social security funds or funds to tap. If Obama and his peers in the past was competent, we would not be in the current economic state! For the past 40 yrs each one that held the presidency was aware of; employers exporting for cheaper means, lack of jobs and shrinkage of same, high growth in welfare, etc! It is obvious they all have sat back with hopes the problems would go away or point fingers at others. There is a difference today in the needy and pure laziness! I pity the; disabled, handicapped, retarded, and all other categories that can't support themselves. Laziness - as far as I am concerned they made their bed..! The abuse in welfare is claimed and includes; approximately 40% of cases is unjustly receiving benefits, caseworkers nationwide are found to be understaffed or incompetent, generation to generation recipients are at a high growth, etc. This list goes on and on! Our leadership should take a look at this and perform their cost cutting where it should be! A family of 4 on welfare receives approximately $38k in annual benefits! This includes; rent, food, utilities, health, dental, etc! This is why it is appealing for the lazy and abuse!  (Nov 13, 2010 | post #147)

Election over: Members of both parties attack Social Secu...

Every time the Feds are in the crapper for their wrong decisions, they quickly look at social security funds. Lets get real. Since the 90's we have all heard that social security funds will be diminished by 2030! What has changed? Social Security was initiated as a retirement supplement for those that pays into it - the working class! Well today, we will find people on SSI under welfare and in most cases never worked a day in their life! How is this possible? One doesn't need to be a math wiz to realize the funds will drain quicker! Of course now considering the conflict of unemployed and lack of jobs - Social Security isn't being funded as it once was! People in their 40's are faced with the fact that they may not be able to retire, or starve as an elderly! Of course for those in their 20's & 30's, they haven't payed much into it to concern themselves! Now, like my peers in our 50's are faced with - our funds will be gone in our life time. And yet our funds are utilized to supplement the welfare system! Why is Obama failing so miserably?

Reality is Obama and all past leaders has failed. For decades we faced; loss in jobs, tax increases, health care increases, etc., and yet no solution. For the past 40 years we forced employers to send products overseas to escape high taxes. These consistant conflicts existed then and still exist today! Every one of our political leaders has either ignored or had hopes the conflict/s will go away! Due to the job situation/s today - for many public assistance is more appealing. A family of 4 on welfare receives approximately $38,000 per year in benefits. The typical job for unskilled labor is in the $7 to $10 per hour range! Abuse in welfare has existed since the 70's (generation to generation way of life)! Of course the excuse has always been - caseworkers are found incompetent or understaffed, or combination of both! Our leadership claims creation of jobs. Why don't they just simply bring our jobs back from overseas! Manufacturing is our backbone of the economy for both White and Blue Collar. The creation of jobs they talk about is short term and only applies to a small percentage of the work force! It is claimed that higher education and enrollment has doubled since the late 90's. The situation today, we will have people educated sitting home or employed in a less potential paying occupation! White Collar employment has diminished just like the Blue Collar! In the 90's many of us may remember the news that Social Security Retirement will expire in 2030! This conflict hasn't changed either. In other words people that is in their 40's now, better prepare themselves...or starve! The public votes these people into their position and promises made is never accomplished!  (Nov 12, 2010 | post #6650)

New York Primary Election Sept 14: Will you vote?

I have few questions since your wife is a supervisor at DSS. We have all at one time or another, know of people abusing welfare - welfare fraud. There are a few currently living nearby me that I personally know is receiving benefits illegally. This neighbor is getting food stamps for dependents that doesn't even live there. She also has her live-in boyfriend living there that not a day goes by they aren't drunk or high, or a combination of both! He strictly works under the table so he gets out of child support, and she gets food stamps for her kids - however they live on campus at a college! Supposedly welfare enforces job searches for her, however, you can't job seek - when at home all day! Its obvious the job searches is strictly writing down info from the phone book! Does welfare ever followup on job searches or the actual recipient? If they did they would find violations of a non-authorized; livein violation/s, food stamps for children not living home, inadequate job searches, etc. Now, this is just one immediate neighbor, there are others nearby as well! I have a neighbor that constantly turns them in and yet no followup/s. This program is well known for abuse and yet the county continues to pay out and of course the state is more in debt!  (Oct 12, 2010 | post #1489)

NYC seeks to ban sugary drinks from food stamp buys

Maddog, you are right and many will agree with you on this. The welfare system policy needs to be restructured. The difference is, how can they? Our economy does not provide enough sufficient jobs! I have read a lot of discussions and debates from this forum and many others. The only feasible solution is for our government leadership to enforce restrictions on child bearing for those on welfare. When you take into consideration that families of 4 is the national average. Welfare pays a higher benefit for every dependent in all categories. With this in mind, for many on welfare their level of education and work experience will only open doors for jobs at minimum wage or slightly higher! Human nature dictates - why take less! Thus, many will utilize the loopholes and stay on welfare! The other side of the coin or conflict/s is, humanity issues! We just can't/will not allow humans to starve or throw children at the curb! However, we should force them into work programs - both county or state level. Department of Corrections utilize inmates for work details; litter cleanup, road work, farms, etc. They should setup a similar system for welfare recipients. If they reduce the freebies the abuse will slow down!  (Oct 12, 2010 | post #61)
