Furor over defaced Greek flag in Macedonia

World peace is a joke. Reading this and other threads across the Internet, where people sharpen ancient hatreds on the whetstones of their fevered tongues by the minute, where insults take the place of intelligent speech, where people from across the globe bring their blood feuds and axes to grind rather than taking the chance to talk with their so-called enemies, leaves me with the opinion that peace is only a period of catching one's breath before the next slaughter begins in earnest.  (Jun 18, 2008 | post #4761)

Two NMMI cadets suspended for hazing

Sal, how do you think military officers defend our country? They lead assaults on our enemies. An NMMI ROTC instructor, who was a Captain in the US Army at the time, told us that military officers were, among other things, professional organizers and managers of lethal violence. As a Vietnam veteran, I think he had an informed opinion. Fighting a war isn't an academic exercise. It's an exercise of one's physical determination coupled with personal discipline, character, luck, and intellectual capacity. Sometimes it's the personal inflicting of injury and death. Unit bonding rituals like blood wings cement soldiers together through collective rites of passage, and have been conducted since before the first spear ever pierced an enemy's chest, in order to build better fighting machines. To a civilian it may seem like a 'silly little game', but human warfare psychology runs according to rules well known to successful military commanders. Training for war isn't like what you expect in Boy Scout camp, or in the classroom. Some of my NMMI classmates have fought and died since graduation, and that wasn't a 'silly little game' either.  (May 11, 2008 | post #27)

NMMI Blames War For Low Enrollment

"Appearantly " you don't know how spell check functions either. And as a lawyer, you'd make a poor secretary. As a secretary, I'm sure that you could come up with excuses for your poor skills like only a natural born lawyer could. Let's set our conversation aside, as the eagle never wasted so much time as when he spoke with the crow. Our stubbornness with this disagreement will only feed itself, and provide no sustenance for either of us, it seems. Das Ende. You claim that you are a lawyer. That claim is dubious in light of your lack of skill with the written english language. Of all professions, a lawyer is required to exhibit eloquence and skillful thinking. I see no evidence of either in any post. They are written with all the style of a seventh grader. It wouldn't be the first time that a law clerk/assistant tried to pass themselves off as a bona fide lawyer. (My 'lawyer's assistant' comment was what they call a "veiled insult," but I see that I have to unveil it for your obtuse understanding.) Perhaps laughing your a** off is an effective strategy in the court of public opinion, but any real court would laugh a lawyer out of the building that showed as blunt an intellect as yours. Why should I complain at the border? I am native born. Ich spreche ein bischen Deutsch, but why waste time conversing with you in any language? Your comments are offensive, your attitude is rude and disrespectful, and letting your slanders go unanswered isn't at all required. I bet I could teach you how to spell quicker than you could teach me whow (your spelling) to read. Incidentally, in german it's "wie" in english it's "how". It's never "whow". Let the lessons begin. March in a Cadet's shoes for a month before you presume to judge them, schweinhund.  (May 9, 2008 | post #37)

Cadet, never try to argue with a pig. It wastes your time, and annoys the pig.(The original proverb is: Never try to teach a pig to sing....) Jesse is a Cadet Hater. Read her previous posts. She's an inarticulate, closedminded, spiteful boor who enjoys insulting people she doesn't approve of. She usually starts her posts with LMAO, abd one laughing chanchre sore she is indeed. The fact that she calls herself a lawyer and assumes the status of an intelligent citizen of Roswell is what I fing so annoying. If a pig stays in its sty, no problem. When the closedminded pig puts on clothes and comes to dinner, now that needs to be addressed.  (May 9, 2008 | post #33)

‘Miracle’ Marine dies; terribly burned in Iraq

LMAO reading your comments, Jesse. So a pencil pushing, non spelling lawyer's assistant from Artesia is unhappy with the way NMMI Cadets behave while kicking back from a week of gruelling regimentation. So what. From the governor on down, New Mexico seems to like the Institute, even if the Cadets don't tip waitresses to their liking, or push in their chairs when leaving the table. Soldiers and Cadets don't act like perfect gentlemen when on leave because they've been in a pressure cooker 24/7, and when they fail to act like the toy soldiers that civilians expect them to be, you should go home to cry to your husband (assuming there is a man stupid enough to put up with you.) Perhaps you should run your complaints by your brother. I suspect that as a soldier, he might openly or silently think that all your bitching is the mark of a spoiled brat civilian. Soldiers have done the dirty work for you 'proud' civilians for generations, and then they get harangued (look that one up in your non-spelling dictionary) by the likes of you for failing to use the crosswalk. Cadets exist apart from your expectations. They exist apart from your opinions. And they are a hell of a lot more worthwhile than any scumsucking whining lawyer's assistant.  (May 6, 2008 | post #31)

Welcome to the age in which NMMI no longer instills pride and a sense of accomplishment, but rather enforces dehumanizing obedience while robbing cadets of their budding masculinity under the guise of 'protecting' them. I received 'blood wings' in US Army Airborne School, and 'blood bars' at NMMI. Instead of an injury, I got two puncture holes in a chest brinning with pride at the accomplishments. This is a volunteer situation. Do you think the individuals lining up for recognition in this warriors' ritual are somehow compelled to do so? Wrong. Taking away these benchmarks of individual recognition, while insisting that the Cadets all go through the numbing routine of obedient soldiers doesn't produce soldiers, warriors, or proud cadets. It produces spiritless lemmings. Blood Bars don't produce punctured lungs, taking them away punctures espirit de corps.  (May 6, 2008 | post #21)

Driver's sentence questioned

Montana doesn't appear to take drunk driving seriously. I'm sure that the driver has excuses. Excuses won't do any good for those left behind after the loss of those two kids. The judge didn't earn their salary that day at sentencing.  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #1)

I've been through Hell on Earth, and that's enough. God and I can talk about my future, and God and you can discuss your future, but let's you and I leave ourselves out of each others' pronouncements.  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #601)

Science / Technology

Should evolution be taught in high school?

Facing the Inquisition, Galileo defended his assertion (then heretical) that the Church was wrong in declaring that the Sun revolved around the Earth, and that observed phenomena best indicated that the Earth revolved around the Sun, by suggesting that Science would never presume to tell, or even presume to know, how Man might 'go to Heaven'---that was unquestionably the sole domain of the Church, but rather that Science would tell Man "how Heaven goes." Today we have attempts at an academic Inquisition, that would force us to parrot the religious authorities' dogmas concerning the origins of Man's body. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to allow Science to address Man's body, and for Religion to address the origin, and the fate, of Man's Soul. I would think that Religion would thus address the more important question.  (Feb 26, 2008 | post #559)

"Jesse from Roswell," did you formulate your kindly insights about the Institute and its Cadets while attending the 'tute, if only for a semester, or while sucking sour grapes at some continuation school? I remember feeling anything but "stuck up" while existing at the bottom of the food chain as a New Cadet for six long months. I remember the rest of my busy ROTC days at NMMI making Army Basic Training seem slow by comparison. I remember Roswell as a great town with great people, and I never felt "better than everyone else", but then again, I never met you. Studying for college and training for war on the weekends doesn't give one much time to meet zeros shooting from the lip at some internet cafe. Too busy getting ready to "defend our country" as you say. The Cadets walking down Main St. to the Dairy Queen aren't "pretending to be great," they're just looking forward to a short break from a demanding lifestyle that you pretend to know something about. I guess every state in the union is entitled to have at least one jerk in it. The rest of the state more than makes up for ya'!  (Feb 26, 2008 | post #4)
