Zanesfield, OH

Air Scouting in the 1940s

In April 1944, the Zanesfield Chamber of Commerce chartered Air Scout squadron #6 within the Tecumseh Council, BSA and maintained it for 2 years. It was one of several such BSA units that were created, nationally, in 1941, and operated for up to 20 years in some parts of the Council. The Air Scouts were older Boy Scouts who were interested in aviation (before the Explorer program was initiated). Next May, the Council will help the country celebrate the BSA's 100th anniversary with in big camporee and Showando at the Clark Co Fairground. Air Scouting will be featured at this event, so we are looking for Zanesfield men who were in the Air Scouts as boys or leaders in the 1944 -45 timeframe. We'd like you to share memories and memorabilia (loan only) with the public at the spring event.  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #1)

Xenia, OH

Air Scouting in the 1940s

Air Scouting started as a BSA program in 1941. In 1944 and 45, the Cooperative Cub of Xenia sponsored Air Scout Squadron 4 for a couple of years. The program was set up to give young men a taste of aviation at the beginning of WW II and lasted for the next 20 years in the various communities within Tecumseh Council. Next spring, Tecumseh Council will help the BSA celebrates its centennial with a big Camporee and Showando, which will include a retrospect of Air Scouting. We are looking for any Xenia men who were Air Scouts or leaders during 1944 -45 and are willing to share memories and memorabilia from that experience.  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #1)

Wilmington, OH

Air Scouting in the 1940s

Air Scouting was a BSA program started during WWII, which lasted about 20 years. Within the Tecumseh Council, several squadrons were chartered, including 2 in Wilmington, and 1 in nearby Sabina. The first Wilmington unit, Squadron 3, chartered by the Rotary in 1948 and lasted until 1950. The second, sponsored by the JAYCEES, was chartered in 1953, 54, and 55. In Ma, 2010, the BSA celebrates its centennial; Tecumseh Council joins in with a big Camporee and Showando at the Clark Co Fairground. We will feature Air Scouting as part of that Showando and are now searching for memories and memorabilia to share with the public. This appeal is for any and all Wilmington men who recall this part of their lives. Also, Please respond if you know the current whereabouts of any such men.  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #1)

New Carlisle, OH

Air Scouting in the 1940s

In 1948 and 49, New Carlisle Cooperative Club sponsored Air Scouting Squadron #5 for a dozen or more New Carlisle teenagers. It was one of several such BSA units throughout the Tecumseh Council in the 1940s and 50s. Next spring, May 2010, the Council will support the nationwide centennial celebration of Scouting in America. Part of their BSA Showando to be held at the Clark Co Fairground will feature Air Scouting as an example of Scouting in the past. In this connection, we are seeking any of the New Carlisle men who were Air Scouts or their leaders during the last two years of the 1940s. In particular, we're looking for memories and memorabilia (for loan only).  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #1)

Bellefontaine, OH

Air Scouting in the 1940s

In the 1940s, the BSA started an Air Scouting Program, which lasted for almost 20 years. Tecumseh Council, which includes Logan County, had two Squadrons, #2 in Bellefontaine (1943-49)and #6 in Zanesfield. (1944-5). In May 2010, the BSA celebrates 100 years of Scouting. Tecumseh Council's contribution will be a large Camporee and Showando at the Clark Cy Fairground. We are searching for men who might have been in either of these squadrons, as Air Scouts or leaders, to help "paint the picture" of their experience, with memories and memorabilia (for loan only).  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #1)

Sabina, OH

Air Scouts 1940s & 50s??

In October, 1943, the first BSA Air Scouting Squadron for Tecumseh Council was chartered in Urbana, by Grimes Manufacturing. Squadron 1 was rechartered every succeeding year until 1956! It was the largest of all Tecumseh Council units. As indicated in my Sabina post, I'm trying to contact any Urbana men who were in Squadron 1, as Air Scouts or leaders, between 1943 and 1956. I'm seeking Air Scout memories and memorabilia (for loan only) of their experiences. In particular, I'm seeking contact with Joe Estep and Dennis Grogan, both of Squadron 1, who helped Mr Grimes greet Lt Gen Eichelberger at Grimes airfield in 1954.  (Dec 21, 2009 | post #2)

Sabina, OH

Air Scouts 1940s & 50s??

In 1948 and 49 there was an Air Scout Squadron 4 in Sabina, sponsored by the Lions Club. It was a BSA program for 15-17 year old young men that preceded Exploring. Next spring the BSA celebrates its Centennial and I am preparing an exhibit on this topic for the Tecumseh Council. I have official documentation on the Sabina unit, including the names of both adults and youth who were involved. I'm anxious to communicate with anyone who was involved directly or knows anything about this Sabina experience. Thanks  (Nov 25, 2009 | post #1)
