Florida House OKs bill requiring teachers to challenge evolution

You are paraphrasing parts of the bible and repeating orthodoxy. I'm sure that if asked, you'd swear you were there to witness all these things. And that's ok. You are entitled to your delusions. If you want to believe that the real creator of the heavens and the earth is now Jesus, that's your right. You can belive that the real intelligence on earth is fruit flies if you want to. I'm not taking away from Jesus Christ, just from those who would embroider him into their quilts and claim it actually makes them warmer. But here are two things you CAN'T do: 1) Teach your religious beliefs to children in a United States public school; 2) Use MY tax money to spread your ignorance. There are sects and cults that you can join and hold ceremonies, have sacrifices, worship trees, basically anything you want SO LONG AS YOU DON'T HARM CHILDREN. You can teach your own kids that the world is flat or diamond-shaped, that birds use radio waves to control the tides, that there was no Holocaust and that Blacks are intellectually inferior by birth. If you try to teach that in public school, you aren't violating the Constitution. The local school board will or should have something to say about it, though. But when you attempt to teach religion as anything but an artifact of civilization, you cross the line established against state-sponsored religion, free speech and privacy. There's no point in trying to convince someone who believes that the earth is 7000 years old that it's really much older, or that fossils represent former living things. You're asking them to give up something much more important to them than knowledge.  (May 2, 2008 | post #646)

Voters and ID cards

RIGHT ANSWER! Thank you. If you want to believe that having a photo ID, a DNA file, a retinal scan and your hard drive indexed is all part of sacrificing a little to the greater good, you have moved into the Twilight Zone.  (May 2, 2008 | post #20)

Economist: Coming economic shocks could spark depression

Take a hop, skip and jump out of the third person and report on just what YOU have had to give up since the CNN-Fox-CNBC-depre ssion started. Just how much time did you spend dumptster-diving to have dinner in the past month? Or are you like the guy who pees on his shoe and calls for a lifeguard?  (May 2, 2008 | post #38)

Economist: Coming economic shocks could spark depression

Ten thousand monkeys on ten thousand typewriters couldn't come close to the sit-com on this web site! There's a gravestone in the Key West cemetary that always catches my eye a brings a chuckle: "I told you I was sick." We're awash in doomsday crystal ball gazers who have nothing to lose by forecasting Armageddon for America. If they're right, they're martyrs. If they're wrong they are still syndicated. So what's to lose?  (May 2, 2008 | post #32)

Florida House OKs bill requiring teachers to challenge evolution

You miss the point Chuckie. Completely. It's not whether there's a rational basis for Creationism or Evolution or Zoroastrianism or any of that. It's whether States can write their version of the Constitution to suit politician's pandering to their voters and have the laws binding. I've heard donkeys come up with better arguments over whether or not Evolution is a religion or not. That's not the point. Can Junior's teacher give her preacher's take on biology with no oversight; can a local school board decide that Kumar isn't fit to teach because he isn't a bible-thumping Christian; can a school board fire a teacher who doesn't teach THEIR way?????  (May 2, 2008 | post #213)

Glitch Delays Full Windows XP SP3 Rollout

XP isn't all that terrible. It's just huge and vulnerable and ugly and won't admit its mistakes. Like my wife. I'd like to think that Bonehead Steve Ballmer ok'd the switch to Vista, screwing the hardware manufacturers over and turning on a light in Palo Alto. But apparently, the storm died down before the new brain was placed inside the monster. I guess I'll wait for a few funerals before I install SP3.  (Apr 29, 2008 | post #5)

Did Dinosaurs Die Because They Weren't Fat Enough?

Yeah, but they had feathers which are just as good in conserving heat as fat and permit the feather duster to travel farther when it forages. A number of late-model dinosaurs had feathers, by the way.  (Apr 25, 2008 | post #2)

Study: Private air traffic control is good

Privatized ATC will cost more than your aircraft, and frankly I like having my fuel taxes pay for the services and not inventing whole new quarries to dig up square wheels. I truly appreciate the guys who thread you through a crowded Class B in the middle of the day without asking for a credit card. When ADS-B becomes the law of the land, ATC's infrastructure SHOULD get lighter but it won't: VORs will be phased out, LORAN will make a comeback as backup to GPS, but the entire system will be geared to helping the airlines deal with $6/gallon jet-A, not to GA. And the price of a new privatized infrastructure will soar. Maybe EADS will get that contract...  (Apr 25, 2008 | post #14)

From T. Rex to Chicken: The Dino-Bird Connection

That's the way to eat it (rattlesnake): it's easy to skin and tasty. Gator is served deep-fried, but the Seminoles know how to cook and they put it on a spit. I just can't get worked up about rats, and I'm told that old female cats are a delicacy in China.  (Apr 25, 2008 | post #149)

Evolution Debate

Obama talks about York

Yeah. soThis is why he's a danger to this country. I am not happy with losing the right to bear arms. Like Prohibition, it won't last. But to make US industry into a charity ball for the underprvileged inner city uneducated at the expense of business it to pretend that unlimited resources are ready for distribution to fellow-socialists. In other words, the business of America is business. Tie a stone to industry's foot and you get what labor did to American business and what Obama wants to put the icing on. The working poor got that way because they built cardboard bridges over real rivers. The latest melt-down is the credit crunch which, admittedly was made possible by greedy banker-brokers but became a reality when an entire nation decided that lying to themselves made it possible to live well beyond their means. The US dollar is taking a direct trip to the crapper and every little tin-pot oil producer is screwing us from behind. Not because we can't pay, but because we can. Sorry, I don't think we need a diplomatic speaking-from-the- heart socialist directing the fleet and pretending that he isn't just getting in line with the Chinese, the Saudis, the Japanese and the Europeans to suck the life out of this country.  (Apr 25, 2008 | post #474)

US Politics

Obama indicates he will prosecute the Bush Administration

If he thought it would get him votes, he'd agree to divorce Michelle and marry Ann Coulter. He's working for extra credit on his term paper now, which demonstrates very clearly why you DON'T want this clown rewriting the US Constitution and taking government apart brick by brick. He sees apartheid in the Fed. He sees an unlimited well of capital for "his" people. He sees the magic wand of "change" as something he can wave over the birdbrains of the American public and watch is chair rise off the platform. He is a fraud and a huckster.  (Apr 19, 2008 | post #10)

House chair condemns Carter, Hamas talks

Jimmy Carter is a disgrace. He is obsessed with living up to his great moment 30 years ago when his administration hosted peace accords between Egypt and Israel. The two neighboring countries would have come to an agreement in a New York City subway tunnel, but Carter siezed the moment for his own grandeur and has ridden that wave ever since. He has no business representing the United States and pretending to make or contribute to making foreign policy. Habitats for the Humanities is an example of his dog and pony show. Americans are dying because of Carter and sops like him who want an epitath more than they value human life. Then, of course, the occasional but reliable rat pokes his whiskers out of the sewer to blame the Jews for the pile of crap his life is. If it wasn't the Jews, it would be the Poles, or the Italians, or the French or the Blacks.  (Apr 18, 2008 | post #28)

2008 Presidential Election

Clinton emphatically says Obama can win White House

If Obama runs, Obama probably loses to the meanest, nastiest Republican machine you ever imagined. If Hillary runs, Obama loses, McCain might lose or might win. But you definitely won't have the Obama Jack-in-the-box to deal with January 21st. You liberal heartwarming whites think you know Obama but you haven't got a clue. He truly intends to rewrite history and if you think you're doing your conscience a favor by backing his slick packaging and patting yourself on the back for your sudden humanitarian instincts, wake up! His ambition exceeds that of any politician I've ever seen, and he's just getting started. You're selling your country and yourselves down the river. This man truly believes that he can bring a detente between the West and Islam and that somewhere in someone's version of heaven he'll be sainted or knighted or be an imam. He truly believes he can strip the traditions out of American government and be a black Thomas Jefferson, whatever it takes, whatever the cost. He is NOT an American and you can either look past the gloss and the wrapping now, or wait for it to hit you between the eyes later. It's okay to feel a pang of guilt for the slaves and their descendants, it would be strange not to. But don't mortgage the farm.  (Apr 17, 2008 | post #32)
