Harry Kalas' death is personal loss
That was a beautifully written article...from the heart. As a 22 year old senior in college, I can say I bawled my eyes out reading that, because I too am a son who had that connection with my father every summertime, just like a lot of kids had with their dads across the Philadelphia region. Harry you will be sorely missed, you went out a champ. (Apr 14, 2009 | post #18)
Nothing states that the first born children weren't innocent or that they deserved to die. I'll state again that a human being did not take the childrens lives. It was an "angel of death." One could argue: What does any child or human being do to deserve death naturally at all, because the death from the "angel of death" would have been from natural causes. The basis of that story was to separate the believers (Israelites) from the non-believers (Egyptians holding them in captivity) and create un ultimate scenario for the Isrealites to escape via the parting of the Red Sea. In todays society, for example, I have done nursing with the pediatric population. What does a 2 year old with leukemia or any kind of cancer (ALL, sarcomas, etc.) do to deserve the illness or possible fatal effects of it. Nothing. Its the course of nature I guess you could say. But that is God taking away their lives, not human hands. (Jun 22, 2008 | post #116)
To respond to the one question to me about God killing the first born children in Egypt. Here is my reasoning. Was it not the "Angel of Death" that descended upon the Egyptians and Israelites? The Lord sent this Angel of Death, meaning that He decided to take away their lives. It was not a human being making the decision to take away another human beings life such as in homicide, suicide, abortion, death penalty. And I guess as a side note, the followers of God (Yahweh) were able to put lamb's blood on their place of living and the angel would pass over. AKA the Jewish feast of Passover. And just to clarify about abortion concerning rape and forced sexual assault. Those kind of brutal acts are something that no woman or man should ever be faced with or deserves. They can be painful and devastating with after effects forever. Concerning a child conceived from these brutal acts. What makes it right to then terminate a life brutally, even if the woman unwillingly chose to conceive the child? Is the baby still not part of your flesh and blood? The fact is that a life is still a life regardless. There is alternatives to aborting the child. Many men and women would love to adopt a child because they cannot naturally. Btw if you're wondering I do not support in vitro fertilization or any of the outside of the body reproductive technologies. (Jun 22, 2008 | post #67)
I do not believe in the death penalty. That would be quite a contradiction. God is the giver of life and God takes away life. Whether a life is taken before birth or after birth, the fact is that it is still murder, if not from natural causes, illness, accidents. (Jun 22, 2008 | post #66)
Just to clarify some of my views. I may not be female and have a uterus to carry a child, but if a woman was pregnant with my child, whether I was 14 and in high school or 35 with a great job, I would still fight to keep the baby. It takes two to make the child and yes, it is the woman's body, but not exclusively her child. Secondly, to have a child, a man and a woman must willingly choose to have sex to conceive a child. Just like to get drunk a person must WILLINGLY choose to drink the number of alcoholic beverages it takes to get to that point. Every action has its consequence. Human beings make mistakes, we are not perfect, never will we be perfect, that is our nature. We can however be educated to make the right decisions. Abortion is a very difficult issue, because of the many changes and sacrifices it takes to raise a child. Abortion is however the easy way out of a bad situation. There are adoption agencies and other alternatives. I realize that not everyone in this country or the world has the same socio-economic status or has the ability to take care of the child, but if they are going to have sex, they must be responsible for the consequences. Do parents not care about the gift of life that was created by them? A fetus is a human being, just take a look at the pictures when they are developing in the womb, they look just like you and I, with a heart beat and brain waves. They may not be able to speak out, but they have the right to life and the right to those future liberties. There is such a thing as self-control. We are sexual beings, but not hormone enraged undomesticated animals who NEED sex to survive. I am not saying I agree with the war 100% and it does take a choice to go to war. Republicans and conservatives are not always right, but I will do whatever it takes to defend what I believe is morality and true values. And I do care for children tremendously. I am a nurse and have worked on pediatric and obstetric units. Trying to deliver caring and compassionate care to a vulnerable population of our society. (Jun 21, 2008 | post #31)
I just want to clarify what I REALLY wrote to The Morning Call. I respect everyone's comments and opinions because after all this is a free country, but The Morning Call did not present my letter to the editor in a fair manner, by editing my opposing view. Just shows how liberal and pro-Obama the paper is. Here is the real text and a link to prove it from The Express-Times. Barack Obama's speech on fatherhood at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago on Father's Day was something that should be applauded. It was something that many men need to be reminded of. However, I want to point out some inconsistencies Obama has made during his campaign. During his fatherhood speech he mentions that a father's "responsibili ty does not end at conception. We need (fathers) to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child -- it's the courage to raise one." He also goes on to mention how "(his) life revolves around (his) two little girls" and how parents must "set an example of excellence for (their) children." The inconsistency is that although no human is perfect, he has set one bad example for his children and that topic is abortion. At a town hall meeting in March in Johnstown, Pa., Obama was asked about educating the youth about sex and he stated that he is "going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby." What kind of example is he setting for his children, youth, and the fathers and parents he just asked to be courageous? To anyone struggling with a decision to keep their unborn child, just remember that your child may have a question for you: Can I live?
