City approves smoking ban7/22/2008

Yes, it's really sad to see that people can't make their own choices and rely upon the government to force everyone else change because they can't seem to figure out how to visit another location. Poor souls...can't make up their own minds. It's ok, I can choose to stay home and not spend a dime on our economy or support our local businesses.  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #15)

City approves smoking ban7/22/2008

I'm one of those who will stay home, but hey it's not really a problem, I'll be buying less gas, spending much less money eating out, won't be renewing any memberships so I'll save money there. The taxes I pay for cigarettes go to help fund health care programs for many in SC who don't qualify for medicaid. Bars will still serve alcohol in a smoke free environment and there will still be DUI's killing people daily and alcoholics suffering from the damages alcohol brings upon the body, but hey at least they will be doing it in a smoke free environment. I love the way freedom of choice gets stripped away from everyone. sheesh...non-smoke rs can't seem to choose to stay away from bars that permit smoking? Fast food places will still be selling unhealthy food in smoke free environments of course. Young children in smoke free environments will be eating unhealthy, heart damaging, obesity causing tooth decaying, cholesterol raising, low nutrient, over processed foods which is somehow better for them then their parents deciding...oh we don't want to visit a smoking restaurant, lets go next door to the smoke free one and eat a salad. Really, What happened to the freedom of choice? Wow, if I don't want to visit a non-smoking place I don't, simple as that. Non-smokers can't make a choice to NOT visit a smoking one without a law? Anyhow, yep, I'll just will stay home, eat healthy from local farmer produce, save money and help fund health care programs with my bad habit. Non-Smokers will continue to drive cars, buy from factories and use other services that pollute our breathing air, earth and streams, while they make laws that strip away the freedom of choice for every American.  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #14)

NO to spanking children!

I used spanking on my children. It was reserved for times when all other methods failed and my children were involved in behavior that could bring harm to themselves or someone else. I believe strongly in using time out, restrictions, age appropriate discussions, role playing etc. All are great ways to actually teach a child to understand and follow rules. When a child is doing something dangerous though or simply repeats a behavior that is very bad I think a sometimes a spanking is needed. Sometimes you just need to use all methods and not just one or two. I have seen some children smacked for silly stuff and never taught the reason for the rule or real consequences. Then I have seen children who were repeatedly told over and over or sat in corners so often they just look forward to it for things like running with scissors or banging on a glass window...Yep. I would be spanking that one because it just might keep him from something more serious.  (Jul 14, 2008 | post #183)

Microgiving.com wishes to help Iowa Flood Victims

I am aware of an organization trying to help Iowa flood victims. There is a team in Iowa right now but are being told basically that their help is not needed, however the team knows of people living in their cars or in tents who do need the help. There are members on the MicroGiving website willing to donate to these families. We do not wish to deal with large charity programs that will decide who gets help or how much help they get. We want to be able to read their stories and decide who we will help and with how much. What we need is a way to reach those who are not getting the federal, state or local aid. We are reaching out to Iowa news sources, forums or email groups in hopes that someone will print, air or share by word of mouth the website name of MicroGiving.com and let people know there are members ready and waiting to send donations through the site and offer them links to members who can send care packages. We just need to know who they are. If they can sign up at the website we can help. This site also has a special registration section for Iowa Flood Victims. We need to know who needs help, The Microgiving team will verify the story and put their request for help live so members can donate to these individuals or families. We also have two fund raisers going right now. Here are those links Registration Page for Iowa Flood Victims http://www.microgi ving.com/?sub=1 &flood_relief= 1 Fund Raiser for Cedar Rapids http://www.microgi ving.com/profile/c edarrapidsrelief Fund Raiser for Iowa City http://www.microgi ving.com/profile/i owafr I have been helped by MicroGiving and my local news interviewed me about that. If you want to make sure MicroGiving is real and does actually help before sharing that info, you can check it out through a trusted news station. Here is the link to my interview with my local news source. http://news12archi ves.com/watch?v=30 79 MicroGiving members do help! Please share the website info with Iowa Flood Victims so they can find some help they need. Law gives bikers OK to run red lights

The problem I see here though is the SUV followed through in your words: "I'm sure he thought the light was green and just never looked." But it was the SUV's responsibility to look. That is being inattentive. The driver coming through the green light also has a responsibility to make sure there are no pedestrians or other vehicles in the path. The green light is not a proceed without caution light. That driver failed to check that the intersection was clear. That is being an inattentive driver. Many people do tend to operate a vehicle in auto drive mode, green means go..so they just go, they don't look both ways and proceed with caution.  (May 30, 2008 | post #48)

Law gives bikers OK to run red lights

we in cars have the right of way at green lights" Just to help a little as you seem confused. The green light does not suggest you proceed without caution. Here is what is written from the SCDMV: Signals Green Go Light (bottom) A green signal light (example 61) means you may proceed with caution - but it does not guarantee safe passage through the intersection. Look in both directions before entering the intersection, then proceed with such care as to avoid hitting any vehicle or pedestrian. Always obey the rules of proper turning or right of way, such as yielding to opposing traffic when you are making a left turn on a green light. Always approach a green signal with alertness and be prepared to stop if the yellow caution light appears. (In cities where traffic lights are arranged horizontally green is at right and red is at the left side. http://www.scdmvon line.com/DMVNew/fo rms/General.pdf  (May 30, 2008 | post #47)

Law gives bikers OK to run red lights

Wow...scary. I am sure many will remember that last sentence the next time a motorcyclist is killed by an inattentive driver. Should all motorists be lumped into the same category as you? Should we consider every motorist on our highway thinks the killing should begin to weed the bikers out? I suppose so since most on this topic seem to think all motorcyclists should be lumped into the same category. Well since I am not a rider, never have been nor am I a passenger I wont lump all automobile drivers together as I am careful and have never even come close to hitting a motorcycle. Even if I have a green light I slow down at an intersection and look carefully for children, animals, foot powered and now motorcycles. I don't look as the green light as a proceed WITHOUT caution light. I won't lump the bikers either as I know plenty of them and know them to be responsible and safe riders who will use this law properly. Some drivers especially those who want the killings to begin, and some bikers who see this as an opportunity to simply run a red light will cause problems. That happens everywhere with every law.  (May 30, 2008 | post #46)
