NO AMNESTY for ILLEGALS!

Sigh. Looks like the KKK is alive and well in WNC. Racist pricks.  (Mar 21, 2014 | post #7)

Info on RHA Health Services

Someone I know may be getting a job with RHA Health Services of Asheville in the near future - can any employees or clients, past or present, give me any information about working with or for them?  (Mar 21, 2014 | post #1)

Great news For RIch People

I do. Every job I've ever worked I arrange to have an extra $5-$10 per paycheck paid in state and federal taxes. At the end of the year I get a nice big bonus back and I've never had to pay anything. I hate paying at the end of the year, and I don't mind doing a little more to avoid that, so it all works out.  (Dec 14, 2010 | post #23)

Heath's fought for several issues I've cared about and been a decent man the whole time. I was proud to support him last year and I'll be proud to support him this year.  (Oct 15, 2010 | post #45)

Religion and Politics - A Toxic Mix!

Actually, America was founded by people running away from an overwhelming, oppressive religious group because they wanted the freedom to worship as they chose. America wasn't founded on God. It was founded on getting the hell away from God. I'm Southern Baptist. I don't make much of it or anything else about myself, because I learned a long time ago the two most inflammatory and virulent topics of conversation are politics and religion. I do what I can to keep any of my views on either of those subjects to myself, even from my family. I agree with the OP, but the sad fact is that churches are staffed and filled with people, and people have opinions. And like people draw like people to them. So we have churches filled with members of all gradients of political leaning. It's a sad state of affairs though that people can't keep the two seperate, even a little bit. Religious extremists rule the Middle East - the greatest fear I have is that in trying to fight (a mistake in itself in some ways) and overwhelm them, we will become them.  (Jul 23, 2010 | post #15)

What the heck is President Obama talking about?

Couldn't possibly be any porkier than Dubya's giant handouts and utterly backwards economic plans. I have faith in President Obama, in any case. Also, Reagan was a great president, but don't forget that as much as Reaganomics created a period of wealth and prosperity in our country it also pushed the national debt from $700 billion to $3 trillion due to borrowed loans from other nations - part of the reason why other nations have such a strong economic foothold here. We're still paying it off - remember the Savings & Loan Crisis and compare it to our current issues. Trimming the fat is a vital part of any good business, but let's make sure we're not trimming muscle or bone first, and I'm hoping that President Obama understands that we need to get back to a point where we can support ourselves instead of relying on the good graces of the rest of the world.  (Mar 10, 2009 | post #3)

Search on for missing McDowell schoolteacher

Again, folks, the police are still investigating the situation, and will make a report when the time comes. I personally believe that Amanda should go in for psychiatric testing, just in case, and we'll see what the investigation comes up with.  (Jan 28, 2009 | post #50)

Arsonist in Old Fort or coincidence?

Over the past few months, there have been a lot of fires in and around Old Fort - multiple houses and properties have been torched, and it doesn't seem like a month, sometimes a week goes by without something being on fire. Noone's died yet, I don't think, but I don't want my family or friends being the first ones. I'm worried that there's someone or someones out there setting these fires, and it's disturbing. I remember the fire we had when Chimney Rock caught on fire - it almost burnt up my grandparents' house, and did burn down my great-great-grandm other's house, and ruined thousands of acres of land.. All we can do now is just keep a close eye out and do everything we can to make sure no more fires start, and call it in if we suspect a fire of some sort. Noone can avoid everything, but if there is someone out there starting these fires, hopefully they'll be caught soon. If not, well, hopefully the recent spate of fires will (pardon the pun) sputter out.  (Jan 26, 2009 | post #1)

I think it's worth waiting to hear what happened before we make any snap judgments. My granduncle told me tonight that she was dead. Then he told me that she was taking students home from school. Earlier today he told me my granduncle-in-law was dead. All three have been proven out to be wrong. Please, please, beware the traps of assumption, snap judgment, and prejudice. The police will investigate the case - let's hear what they and Amanda have to say before we do anything. I'm glad she's all right and safe now. I was worried to hear about anyone's house being broken into so violently, and in such an obviously hostile manner. The best thing we can do is to give her our support in this time of trouble and assist the police in finding out the truth and the culprit(s).  (Jan 26, 2009 | post #11)

Attitude of New Manna

A lot of people have known about what most of the New Manna people are like, and we try to avoid them. For the most part, they're their own little insular cult. Look up towards North Cove Baptist, if you want to drive that far - they were decent people 10-15 years ago when I went up there.  (Jan 26, 2009 | post #3)

healing on main street

Lord, lord. OK, here's the straight facts - if there's any businesses anywhere that can make money right now, then they're Doing It Right. If it does help someone, it only takes one person for it to be worth it, right? (I have a low opinion of the vast majority of homeopathic remedies beyond herbs/chemical compounds. Crystal reiki - give me a break.) Can anybody say that if one person's helped by this place, in any way, their pain and suffering, possibly their death, is worth shutting Open Hands down? Try to understand. If the vast majority of the community thought that the place was evil or wrong in any way, they'd be closed in a heartbeat. Since they're not, they're not. If they reveal themselves to be anything other than upstanding businesspeople, they'll go down faster than a Thai midget hooker on Bill Gates. So stop panicking and find something constructive to do with your time.  (Jan 26, 2009 | post #72)

Is It a Sin to be Depressed?

Depression is a medical condition, not a sin. Take your medicine, try to find reasons to not be depressed, keep praying, and do whatever it takes to get over it. You'll be ok, hon, just don't let your friend convince you you're doing something wrong when you're not.  (Jul 31, 2008 | post #175)

High-Dollar Escort Service: Man pleads guilty in sex ring

Please excuse me sir, but you're mistaken. Seung-Hoi Cho, the 27 year old young man who perpetrated the VT shootings, apparently never once played any first-person shooters, the "point and click" games you refer to. A quote from Governor Tim Kaine's VT Review Panel's final report: "He was enrolled in a Tae Kwon Do program for awhile, watched TV, and played video games like Sonic the Hedgehog." "None of the video games were war games or had violent themes. He liked basketball and had a collection of figurines and remote controlled cars." "...Cho's roommate never saw him play video games. He would get movies from the library and watch them on his laptop." Cho had a history of mental illness, including anxiety disorders and depression. Other similar shootings such as Steven Kazmierczak's rampage at Northern Illinois University have revealed absolutely no evidence of violent video games being linked to the event. All I'm asking is that you please not make pre-assumed notions about anything - video games, TV, movies, music, plays, people, writing, anything.  (Apr 8, 2008 | post #34)
