Romance languages: Albanian, French, Italian, Spanish, Po...

Roman language survived only among the most primitive peoples who had no other means than to mimic the Romans. All Romance languages are descendants of Vulgar Latin dialects spoken by the common people in the Roman Empire. Peoples who had some degree of cultural selfhood and sophistication didn't need this thing. For them, as for example the Macedonians, Romans were nothing more than a war-mongering barbarians. Spread of the Romance languages occurred in two main stages: The first stage occurred as from 240-100 BCE, owing to the expansion of the Roman Empire over a good part of Europe, Northern Africa and portions of the Middle East. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, these vulgar dialects of Latin (which by the way was non-spoken by people and pure administrative language) spoken in different parts of its territory started to diverge from each other and eventually evolved into dozens of distinct languages by the 11th century AD. The second stage began after the 11th century AD as a result of the expansion of Romance-speaking European powers into Balkans (through Venice, Napoleonic France, etc.), and especially in the Americas after the 15th century. Under the Romance language influence new nations formed from the migrants of Roman empire periphery, which spread here and there, living in numerous pockets and enclaves. They used the borrowed words and expression from Roman language, and they alienated from their origin and old languages. One such group of people are so-called "Albanians ", which is also an exonym, a term foreign to them, as they use to call themselves "Shiptare ". The Shiptar/Abanian language is admixture of many diferent NON-Albanian sources. Most of the vocabulary are Roman-derived words. "Out of 5140 studied words Romance (Latin) element is the most present, found in some 1420 borrowed words. Tataro-Turkic is found in 1180 words; so called "Greek" within 840 words, and the rest 540 words are of the Macedonic provenance. Some 400 words are found to be of African origin." ('Maps and Politics' , H.R. Wilkinson, Liverpool, 1951.) Shiptar/Albanian also has two genders, masculine and feminine, similar to the Romance languages.  (Dec 27, 2014 | post #1)
