New York grandmother is latest lottery millionaire

Congratulations to the winner! But she did get really lucky: 1:2,646,000 odds of winning for a $5 play. Much better to play Sweet Million, which has a 1:3,838,380 odds of winning for a $1 play. So if you were to buy 5 Sweet Million tickets, your odds are 1:767,676, about 3.44 times better than the scratch-off game she played, Smooth 7's. And and on top of that, she only gets paid $33,015 for 20 years. Sweet Million pays out the $1 Mil. (- taxes) up front. Much better deal, especially if you expect inflation to go up.  (Feb 19, 2010 | post #1)

Again and yet again, a Pa. ticket wins $1 million

The "$1 Million Jolly Jackpot" $20 scratch game actually has slightly better odds of winning $1 million in the Pennsylvania Lottery. 1:480,000 odds vs. 1:513,813 odds based on a $20 play.  (Feb 15, 2010 | post #1)

$1 Million Powerball Ticket Sold In Fenton

Congratulations to the winner! He/she was really lucky because Lotto has better odds of winning. If you spend $2 on a Powerball Powerplay ticket your odds of winning $1 million are 1:5,138,133. If you spend $2 on a Lotto ticket, the odds are 1:1,764,763 -- almost 3 times better! And the Lotto jakcpot is usually quite a bit higher than $1 million. For example, it's $2.6 million as of today. Not to say that you won't be lucky if you win the Lotto, but if you're going to play, why not pick the game with the better odds of winning?  (Feb 11, 2010 | post #7)

Winning $900,000 Mega Ball ticket sold in Naples

Mega Money has relatively great odds of winning $500,000+. 1:2,986,522 odds of winning for a $1 play, or 1:149,326 odds for a $20 play. Certainly much better odds than the $20 Gold Rush scratch game, which has 1:2,500,000 odds of winning $500,000 ($20 play).  (Jan 31, 2010 | post #1)

Winning lottery ticket sold in Shippensburg

The odds of winning $1 million were 1:125,000 which are excellent compared to other games with the same prize: $20 Scratch games (6 games), Super 7 and Powerball (with PowerPlay). Super 7: 1:582,984 odds Powerball: 1:411,051 odds Best $20 Scratch Game: $1 Million Jolly Jackpot - 1:384,000 odds  (Jan 7, 2010 | post #14)

Man wins $3 million Missouri Lottery prize

The odds of winning the $200,000 A Year For Life prize is 1:1,622,538. The odds of winning the Missouri Lotto jackpot based on a $20 play (the cost of the Scratch ticket) is 1:176,476. So, while the prize is lower--although the jackpot is often higher than $1 million--the odds of winning the Lotto are over 9 times better!  (Dec 11, 2009 | post #6)

Another Mega Millions Winner, For $12M This Time

Pretty low odds of that happening. Let's assume that 50 million tickets were bought for Tuesday's drawing. Since the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1:175,711,536 there would be a 28.45% chance of someone hitting the jackpot.  (Sep 2, 2009 | post #1)

Coral Springs man wins $500,000 Mega Money jackpot

Congratulations to the winner! He did get quite lucky: 1 in 2,986,522 odds of winning based on a $1 play. As staggering as those odds are, Mega Money has better odds of winning than any other Florida Lottery game at the $500,000 prize level.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #30)

Powerball jackpot increases to $129 million

Not really that much of a surprise considering that the chances of winning based on a $1 play are 1 in 195,249,054. Actually I'm surprised the jackpot went up by only $15 million since Saturday's $113.7 jackpot. It wouldn't be a stretch if the Powerball jackpot went up to $400 million and broke Mega Million's $390 million jackpot some day since the odds of hitting the jackpot are lower for Powerball.  (May 12, 2009 | post #1)

Panama City Man Wins $5,000 in Lottery

Wow, this dude is really lucky since the odds of winning $5,000 playing Wild Cherries is only 1:240,000. The odds of winning $5,000 playing Florida Lotto are 1:81,410, and Play 4 has 1:10,000 odds of winning $5,000. That means Play 4 gives you 24x better odds of winning $5,000!  (May 8, 2009 | post #1)

Powerball jackpot worth an estimated $109 million

This seems like a lot but, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1:195,249,054 ($1 Play). So even if a 100 million tickets are sold, there's only a ~51% chance there will be a winner! Pretty incredible odds.  (May 7, 2009 | post #1)

Leesburg man plays scratch-off game, wins $10 million in ...

The odds of winning $10 million playing the $20 Blockbuster Scratch game are 1:6,552,000. A comparable payout would be the Florida Lotto Jackpot + $10 million, which costs $2 per play. If you spend $20 (10 tickets), your odds of winning are 1:2,295,748, which is almost 3 times better! So, if you're looking to win $10+ million, it's smarter to play the Lotto.  (May 7, 2009 | post #11)
