Doctor heads to court after online sex sting

Once an interesting exchange of information and ideas, this forum now seems hopelessly dominated by trolls. Too bad.  (Nov 20, 2012 | post #16604)

You're either trolling or nuts.  (Nov 16, 2012 | post #16585)

Guy's a textbook loser, no doubt. It's hard to comment on Roisman without the chat logs and perhaps some of the court docs. I don't know if they've been sealed. However, if the guy said anything that implied he thought the decoy was an adult, that undermined the sting. He told Hansen it was an "honest mistake," which supports this belief. I don't think we know enough about the details to criticize the judge's ruling. One thing we can give Wolin credit for: He realized immediately in the garage that his life was forever changed. Some of the targets did get it right away. One guy thought Hansen was a therapist, others thought he was the girl's father, etc.  (Nov 9, 2012 | post #16559)

Given how high-strung Wolin was in the garage, I think he would have lunged at Hansen. Might have been the funniest scene ever. Never dawned on Wolin that it was reckless to throw the sunglasses when cops are coming at you with guns? That was his emotional state.  (Nov 8, 2012 | post #16554)

Actually, we don't know which perps Dateline chose to show and which it edited out. If a perp just left as soon as Hansen appeared, it might decrease his chances of appearing on Dateline, since it makes for less interesting television. But in Wolin's case, he was not going to avoid it because a) he was a doctor and b) his meltdown in the garage made great TV, perhaps one of the finest moments in the history of reality TV. Carnac raises a point I had not considered. If Wolin had just taken his arrest quietly in stride, then not opened his trap at the police station, would we even be still discussing this case?  (Nov 8, 2012 | post #16551)

Well said. I gotta say, though, I wish the lemonade hadn't spilled. It would've been great to see what Hansen could get out of him.  (Nov 8, 2012 | post #16546)

Wolin's attorney can say whatever she wants. He showed up at the house to meet what he thought was a 13 year old for some type of sexual liaison. Would any resonable person condone that behavior?  (Nov 7, 2012 | post #16543)

Valid point, thanks. However, as Carnac stated, it does demonstrate Wolin's intent, even if inadmissible in court. Knowing that Wolin's intent was less than benign would only embolden a DA. It could even add public pressure to prosecute, given the wide audience that saw the episode. Wolin didn't only say he was "curious. " He acknowledged that he should have never been involved in that conversation, admitting in effect that he was doing something illegal. It shows Wolin overestimated his ability to "manage" the interrogation, perhaps an occupational hazzard for someone in an elite profession. If Wolin was going to submit to an interrogation, he should have said something like: "Are you crazy? I never for an instant believed she was a minor. I know I played along with it, but that's what people do everyday on Internet. Then we meet up and have a good laugh about our respective roles. When I arrived at the house and saw an adult female, it only confirmed my belief that I had been dealing with an adult. I thought all along I was setting up a fling with a lonely housewife. I did nothing illegal. The problem is you guys: You guys did a pathetic job of impersonating a minor. If you had done your job in even a mediocrely convincing way, I wouldn't have shown up at the house." I'm not saying those lies would have gotten him off. But they would have enabled Wolin to build a plausible defense.  (Nov 6, 2012 | post #16536)

It's on YouTube. However, the chatlog would be more revealing. Also, Roisman might have had the good sense to shut up when taken to the police station, 1st rule of a defense attorney. Wolin, on the other hand, agreed to be interrogated and said things like, "I was curious." That wouldn't have helped him at trial. So the young Navy enlisted man might have shown more sense than the middle-aged doctor. However, I'm just speculating.  (Nov 6, 2012 | post #16530)

I don't know the Roisman case beyond the Dateline episode. However, it's possible Roisman said something like, "Look, it's obvious to me that you're an adult and just playacting." If he did, I can see how it would nullify a conviction since there was never a belief on his part that he was dealing with a minor.  (Nov 5, 2012 | post #16523)

But he'd have to be honest about his attraction to children, not make stupid excuses. I don't want to read that "I just walked into the house by accident."  (Nov 4, 2012 | post #16518)

Post Megan's List employment? Almost nothing as an employee, I'd think. Maybe salesman at a sex paraphernalia shop. Would have to be free lance. If the law permits, best for famous predators to write an honest book about the experience of being exposed on national TV. "I Am America's Most Hated Sex Predator," $1.99 on Amazon Kindle. I'd probably buy it, so long as Wolin or Kaye gave an honest account. How long had they lived with that compulsion? Do they still have it? What do their family and friends say? What kind of exchanges do they have when they are recognized on the street? That show was popular. Look how many postings on this forum. I think they could sell a few hundred thousand copies.  (Nov 3, 2012 | post #16513)

Interesting forum. Posters might like to read about the debate over letter another Catch a Predator alum back into a house of worship: http://www.washing tonpost.com/local/ bethesda-synagogue -grapples-with-pre sence-of-rabbi-con victed-of-sex-crim e/2012/10/26/a6549 984-1a0c-11e2-aa6f -3b636fecb829_stor y.html Not to imply anything about the fact that Kaye and Wolin were Jewish. I'm perfectly aware that most predators nabbed were Christians (like myself), and that sicko sex predators come proportionately in every color and faith.  (Nov 3, 2012 | post #16509)
