Suspected animal hoarding reminds us to be alert

Thank you so much for bring this issue to our attention. I'm a researcher for the series Confessions: Animal Hoarding, currently airing on Animal Planet that tells the stories of people overwhelmed by the number of pets they own. The problem is on the rise and affects communities across America. If you are concerned about the health of animals in someone's care and suspect they may be hoarding them, we might be able to help. Most animal hoarders donít see themselves as hoarders, and sometimes donít intentionally collect animals. Their relationship with their animals has threatened their relationships with friends and family. Most of these situations arenít dealt with until they become criminal. This results in animals being euthanized by over-stressed shelters, and doesnít address the underlying psychological issues - meaning nearly 100% of people end up in the same situation again. We are dedicated to finding comprehensive long-term solutions and believe therapy to be key to this. We can bring in experts to help people and their pets. If you or someone you know needs help because animals have overrun their life, visit www.animalhoarding project.com to learn more and submit their story. Alternatively, contact me directly at help@animalhoardin gproject.com or toll-free at 1 -877-698-7387. We will treat all submissions with confidentiality and respect.  (Jul 18, 2011 | post #1)

How many pets to you have in your home?

Many people enjoy the company of pets. For example, according to the Humane Society of the United States, 35% of Americans own at least one dog, with another 33% owning at least one cat. While most pet owners provide excellent care to one or two animals at most, for some people, the desire to keep animals as pets crosses the line into a compulsive behavior called animal hoarding. What is Animal Hoarding? Animal hoarding is characterized by the following: * obsessive collecting of animals * an inability to provide minimal standards of care for these animals * a failure to recognize that one is not able to provide minimal standards of care I'm a researcher for a documentary series currently airing on Animal Planet that tells the stories of people overwhelmed by the number of pets they own. If you are concerned about the health of animals in someone's care and suspect they may be hoarding them, we might be able to help. Medina SPCA Trying to Combat Animal Hoarding

That's right, Georgia. This issue needs many different authorities/ services dealing with the issue to make sure it doesn't happen again. Police enforcement, social services and animal control need to work together. It really can be a strain on local governments to deal with this issue appropriately. Luckily Hoarding Task Forces are starting to be created all over the country to tackle this issue. Unfortunately not all of them also include animal hoarding. The more we talk about this issue the closer we are to finding a solution. That's my hope at least.  (Jun 22, 2011 | post #4)

Cat Hoarding Case Update

Hey Heather, To answer your question: when a hoarding case is busted by Animal Control they often take the animals to local shelters who are not ready to deal with a sudden influx of animals. This is how they are overburdened. They may not have the resources or the space for 50+ more animals arriving at once.  (Jun 22, 2011 | post #3)
