Because people would have a fit if they raised taxes to equal the same percentage of what you pay in tithings. So you have the conviction of your religion to give up lots more money than others. I my self prefer the way I got it.  (Aug 6, 2009 | post #378)

Flipper, I do see the difficulty in your position, and thanks for helping enlighten me. My kids are grown and all went to public schools. In Briton they do talk about homosexuals in sex-ed class and no kids have been traumatized. I think in this country the fanatics have taken way too much control and attys can file lawsuits for every little thing. I find it very troublesome that, like the Baptists you mention earlier, the fundamentalists are great at attacking others but ignore their own issues. I think religious fundamentalism is more and more coming to blows with science and is trying harder these days to hang on. There has been an up surge in fundamentalism and I think that is in response to more and more facts that they are basically WRONG in their version of creation, science, the cosmos and human equality. I advise my girls to NOT attend the Church of Christ, as that church is sexist and women are not treated as equal to men in that they can’t be ministers, lead prayers or be elders. Something I find extremely disturbing is that a lot of these fundamentalist teach children the earth is only some thousands of years old. Its tantamount to returning to the dark ages. to; writewingproxyco ntin Mormons, like Jews have a culture of working hard and saving money. sometimes the church will help a family who needs a new car or even home and has way to many kids... Having so many children is really not doing the human race any good. It is selfish to over populate in the face of our human caused problems.  (Aug 6, 2009 | post #376)

Getting back to gay rights.. What the gays want is to be recognized as being a couple of people in love. Not all what a marriage per-sec, lots just want the same rights in taxes, medical issues, insurance, inheritance etc. that opposite sexed partners have. I understand that since they are in love and feel just the same as we do, then why not? Just because a religion says they can’t? We are not supposed to base our politics on religion in this country, but we have to some degree or other for centuries, and now there are moves on to stop that. I see religions claiming responsibility for law, morality and civilization. They seem to forget that most basic law theory and civilization was invented by the Romans, Greeks and other pagan-like peoples before Christ ever walked the earth or the Jews were freed from their captivities in slavery. I know a great many atheists who are extremely moral, law abiding, highly educated and civilized. I concede that marriage is a religious contract so perhaps government should come up with one that the Justices can use that is devoid of heavenly reference. That ‘civil union’ declaration is a good compromise I think, but I do know some religious gays that really, really want to be married in church by the pastor. It’s a tough subject and both sides twist and spin their research. From what I have seen the pro-gay liberals do seem to have the better arguments and have been caught in less BS than the right wingers. In my mind there really is no factual and legal reason to not allow same sex partnerships equal rights.  (Aug 4, 2009 | post #366)

Well, all you can do is stick to the authorized policy and go with whatever the school board says is ok for a sex-ed class/discussion. It really is up to the parents to discuss sex with their children. I know many sign papers stating they do not wish their child to get sex-ed at school. My Ex-wife did that with my youngest child in Jr. High. A year later when I had custody of her I allowed her to attend sex-ed classes. The child was glad to go and learned from the experience. Seems she was upset/hurt about being one of the 'banned' kids and not getting to be with the group the first time around. Here is a novel idea, perhaps when it comes to the more touchy subject of homosexuality there could be a pamphlet or flyer sent to the homes and the parents could, (if they wanted), read it with the kids. It is ironic that we tell kids that they might be molested and warn about "BAD TOUCHING" causing children to be paranoid at times, but are mum about same sex relationships which in reality don’t pose a real physical threat to them any more than heterosexuals do. Knowledge never hurt anyone, it’s the lack of facts that sets up a kid to not be fully aware and informed about what’s going on. ALSO, fundamentalist or not, a certain percentage (what the percentage is, is debated) of boys and girls are gay. So if we ignore that fact it also sets up the that age old conflict of the adolescent with same sex attraction being ashamed and hiding their true self for many years often living with mental anguish for years before “coming out”, getting divorced and entering into a same sex relationship. I know several from my childhood who went through that exactly.  (Aug 4, 2009 | post #365)

Yes, I can see where it is uncomfortable having to tell kids about something that pretty much is kept in the closet. (no pun intended) problem is, unless these kids are home schooled they are probably going to run into gay teens in school or gay adults when the kids are old enough to realize what is up. I my self had a conservative up bringing in Winslow, AZ a small town founded by Mormons. I knew the facts of life as we had little boy rap sessions in the ally near home or at school. Now and then we saw a men's magazine etc. But never did I hear a word about homosexuality. (There were a couple boys/friends from the block who later are gay. Looking back these boys had tendencies even in kindergarten and younger.) I had to be rudely awakened when I left home at 18 and traveled to my first city. I really wish I had been better prepared for what to expect and at least had been told about homosexuality. I had a rude and somewhat traumatic learning experience. So, unless you plan on keeping kids locked up, they have to be prepared for reality and reality has lots of unusual things, not just gays. I think its more about the adults being uncomfortable with homosexuality more than the kids will be shocked or traumatized by the simple knowledge of homosexuality. With all the movies and shows on TV that have gays in them it’s about impossible to hide homosexuality and the kids will feel we were dishonest if we don’t educate them properly.  (Aug 3, 2009 | post #363)

You nailed it. They have no more right or reason to cast thier preconceived notions onto other beings than I do being a Deist to say anyones blief is in error. Nobody has imperical proof of anything.  (Aug 1, 2009 | post #360)

Thanks, I watched some of that and just can’t stomach the dogma and lack of reason. Why it is that people promote what is certainly mythology as factual truth is beyond me. Good luck, but you will never get thought to the fundamentalist right winger as they have blinders and ear plugs that only allow them to only see and hear what their particular leaders allow.  (Jul 31, 2009 | post #358)

Thanks, I will try and see it. I am not against Mormons. Just saw the topic here under Winslow/Holbrook and was wondering if this was another right wing religious attack of some people/group, as they do with the gay community.  (Jul 30, 2009 | post #357)
