Ouisa D. Davis: Cell-phone drivers put others at great risk

LLB, 10 & 2 is old school... and can actually cause you serious bodily harm in the event that your air bag deploys. People who keep their hands on top of, or near the top of the steering wheel, such as at 10 & 2 tend to come out of accidents with broken forearms because of the explosive pressure of the air bag slamming their arms into the ceiling... and still continuing to inflate, despite that arms only bend at the elbow and wrist. It's better to keep your hands at 3 & 9 these days. I'm shocked and amazed that I'm saying this... I actually agree with Mrs. Davis... for once. Driving is not an individual activity. It's a community event, and distracted drivers put others at risk of serious bodily harm or death. Cell phone use while driving has been shown to be as bad as driving while intoxicated, and text messaging has been proven to be 25 times worse than even that in study after study. My life, and the lives of my family are far more important than that phone call that can wait an extra 10 minutes. We survived without cell phones for tens of thousands of years... I don't think the 15 - 30 minute commute to and from work, school, the grocery store, etc. is going to kill us. Like Mrs. Davis said, if it's THAT important to you, get a blue tooth device. They're cheap these days, and getting cheaper. This is a public safety issue, and those who will not comply should have their licenses suspended and be forced to pay steep fines.  (Nov 13, 2009 | post #5)

Fort Hood closed amid reports of several killed

Correct... but they were not allowed to serve shoulder to shoulder with non-asian soldiers. They were segregated to protect against incidents such as this. That's called common sense. Too bad Political Correctness and Cultural Sensitivity are counter-productive to good old fashioned common sense.  (Nov 6, 2009 | post #142)

Fort Hood closed amid reports of several killed

It's being reported that there were two shooters. However, how one man with two pistols shoot 42 people is easy to figure out with the most elementary of weapon knowledge. He reloaded!  (Nov 6, 2009 | post #141)

Okay, if no one else will address the 800 pound gorilla in the room... Here's where the Army went ridiculously wrong in the first place: Allowing him to sign up, despite the fact that he was a natural born American Citizen. Here's your scenario: A young Soldier returns from a tour, be it his 1st, 2nd, even 3rd; in Iraq or Afghanistan. He's seen too many close friends and fellow Soldiers killed by Muslims to not have some severe PTSD. So, we send him to the mental health center and who happens to be his shrink? A **** MUSLIM!! Do you really think that's smart at any level?? Political Correctness and Cultural Awareness are going to be the destruction of the U.S.  (Nov 6, 2009 | post #133)

Hopefully one thing that will come from this is the pathetic state that all Army post gate security is in. Even here at Bliss, you don't have to have a post decal, nor do you even have to show your military id, just a driver's license. The idiots barely look at your id's anyway. What kind of credentials do they have to know that they're not looking at a fake ID? The civilian gate guards need to go, and the random access to military posts needs to end.  (Nov 5, 2009 | post #22)

Letters: ACORN loss hurts many in need

No one is entitled to anything. The Founders said you have "inalienable rights. Among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." I don't see a right, or entitlement, to a home or house in there anywhere. If people want something, they have to EARN it. The hand-outs have to stop somewhere. It's not our responsibility as tax payers to provide for the lazy, ignorant, and irresponsible.  (Nov 5, 2009 | post #33)

Yep. You aren't comprehending what you're reading. He was two payments away from owning his tractor trailer when he had a stroke. As a result of the stroke, he wasn't able to make the payments and lost his tractor trailer. However, that's not an excuse for him to buy a house beyond his means. ACORN's funding came from tax payers, so he nearly got a cut rate deal that responsible individuals could never get by placing the excess burden of his irresponsible behavior and decisions on those of us who are responsible tax payers. Pathetic. This is why I have a problem with the theory of natural selection. We should have evolved beyond these kinds of pathetic life forms... but they still thrive... and they're generally called Democrats / Liberals.  (Nov 4, 2009 | post #10)

Picking a fight: Obama vs Fox News

When you present verifiable facts, it takes the hot air out of the balloons. As an example, look at those whom I've responded to. No responses at all from them to the facts that I present. Someone else will jump in with their opinions, and I'll present more facts to contrast their response and they go away too. It's quite amusing actually.  (Oct 30, 2009 | post #887)

Letters: Obama just has the perfect plan

Actually, he can fix a few of those things with one simple command. For instance, the Patriot Act can be repealed by Executive Order, and the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan can be brought home by him simply saying "Get them back here, NOW!" Apparently, he knows a bit more about the threats to national security than you do... as did Bush. And he's as power hungry as Hillary, and will never repeal the Patriot Act willingly.  (Oct 29, 2009 | post #8)

What is my screen name? PATRIOT Missile. What does that convey to you? "Hmm... perhaps he does something with PATRIOT. Maybe he's in the military!?" I get quite a bit of information about the threat that all of those countries present. Most of us in the military have been saying that both campaigns have been grossly mismanaged for quite awhile now. Sorry, but we can't exactly put that on the news because we're not allowed to do things like that. Obama is screwing the economy up as bad as he's helping to prolong a war without supporting it. What type of effect do you think an extra tax on businesses, just for simply being businesses, will have on the U.S. economy? Take a good long hard look at Cap and Trade. Taxing businesses for simply operating. "That's not going to push more jobs overseas and close businesses in the states... no way!" Obama is a bumbling buffoon on foreign policy because he's showing OUR belly to the entire world. It has nothing to do with going to war and fighting everyone. He's managed to break protocol and insult the queen, he's offered England two mediocre, senseless, techno gifts to their well thought out, historically significant gifts. He didn't bow to the Queen of England, but straight up bowed so low he nearly licked King Saud's shoes, a very clear sign of inferiority and fealty in the Muslim world. He gave a Reset button (Seriously?? They consider this a gift of peace??) to Russia that was so badly mistranslated that it didn't even come close to saying Reset. And think about it... Resetting our relationship with Russia throws us back to the Cold War. I'm personally okay with that, because that was a golden age of research and development, with a booming economy, and a clearly defined national purpose and enemy. However, is that what we as a nation want? Another borderline standoff at the Fulda Gap with Russia? He has said that the rest of the world is peffectly fine having nuclear power, to include Iran, who's openly attempting to build and has seriously threatened to use, nuclear weapons. But, Nuclear power isn't okay for us. So... he's hamstringing us in the energy race, continuing our dependence on fossil fuels, foreign oil? Do you people even pay attention to what he's actually doing before defending him? Bush did some bad things, got it. But Obama is no different. Hell, Obama's even continuing Bush's policies, and retaining the power of the Patriot Act that liberals railed against so vehemently. Liberals equal uninformed hypocritical jokes these days.  (Oct 29, 2009 | post #865)

So, you don't think that the possibility of a terrorist harboring nation selling biological and chemical weapons to terrorists for use in terrorist attacks against Americans on American soil is a national security threat? How VERY naive of you. But then, I've come to expect that from liberals. World peace and national security isn't going to come by sitting around the campfire and singing kumbaiya with those who wish nothing more than to simply committ mass murder. I agree that Afghanistan was mismanaged. However, isn't it simply more mismangement to sit on a decision whether or not to send reinforcements for over 2 months? While decisions have to weighed carefully, when dealing in matters of war and security, they have to be made fairly quickly. Instead, Obama's been back on the campaign trail. I would think that Soldiers in danger would be at least a slightly more important issue than whether or not healthcare passes tomorrow or next week, or if a Republican or Democratic governor is elected. I think Obama is weak on foreign policy. Dangerously weak. If he doesn't want to support the war, all he has to do is deny the troop surge. He's playing politics, trying to keep people back here from accusing him of being anti-Military with decisions to support such accusations. By waiting he's costing more lives. Who's to say those 18 Soldiers he "honored " last night would be dead right now had he sent the support numbers two months ago when the request hit his desk? You can't passively support something. He promised to end the war, and has done nothing to that effect yet, when the decision rests in his hands to pull all of the Soldiers back. Either get behind the war, or get out of it. One or the other. This is not a fence sitting situation.  (Oct 29, 2009 | post #857)

Housing lacking for Fort Bliss influx

Hilarious. Name a city, any city, in the WORLD that doesn't have sketchy neighborhoods at all. It's not a military thing. It's a civilization thing. The Haves need the Have Nots to do the things they don't want to do. The Have nots need a place to live too, and aren't paid well enough to live in the Malibu-esque locales. Pinning that on the military is simply ignorant.  (Oct 29, 2009 | post #14)
