I have my feet in a couple of overlapping worlds: I am trying to follow developments in and around Tarentum, PA, a small river town twenty miles up the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh, and I also try to follow developments in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the denomination in which I serve as a pastor.

They also would like to run away when subjected to so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques". (Apr 10, 2008 | post #4)
Charges dismissed against woman who kept hundreds of cats, some...
I can understand how that might have made sense to you. But leaving holes open on one's property does create the risk that a visitor or trespasser might fall in. Not everybody is ready to assume that liability. (Apr 6, 2008 | post #11)

She might have been storing the carcasses for burial when it would be easier to dig a burial pit. (Apr 6, 2008 | post #8)

It is unfortunate that people are jumping to the conclusion that she in fact mistreated animals before she has her day in court. It seems that the conclusion may have been reached solely on the fact that some animals were not well. The SPCA and the DA together did not draft charges with enough specificity to convict anyone on the first go around. They say they plan to re-file. Let them. Until there is an actual hearing with actual evidence of wrongdoing presented, I'm ready to hold off on reaching conclusions about what happened. (Apr 4, 2008 | post #6)

I wonder if this product includes an ignition interlock feature to ensure that the patrol car cannot be operated while a human being is chained to its exterior. (Apr 1, 2008 | post #1)
Obama: Constitution stained by 'sin of slavery'
Alex, take a look at Article 1, Section 9, Clause 1, the provision that protected the right to continue to participate in the slave trade in the states that allowed it. If that is not condoning slavery, I don't know what is. (Mar 21, 2008 | post #3191)
Obama: Constitution stained by 'sin of slavery'
In my opinion the stain of sin in the Constitution is not about the attitudes held by many or some at the time the document was written, but rather in compromise offered in the language of Article 1, Section 9, Clause 1: "The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person." The fact that Congress did prohibit the slave trade as soon as it became constitutional to do so does not fully excuse the fact that the slave trade itself was allowed to continue for that time. "In order to form a more perfect union" the Founding Fathers made a deal with the devil. (Mar 20, 2008 | post #2854)
Raid Of Pa. No-Kill Shelter Finds 700 Cats, Many Of Them Dying
I agree with you shelters need to be run properly. In time we will find out whether the Tiger Ranch was actually as bad as they say. It is interesting that already actual number of cats found there has had to be revised downward from the initial claims of 700. (Mar 20, 2008 | post #2)
Tarentum Borough Council to deal with trash, trucks, and power
<p>Chele, I would suggest that you call the Borough Office and ask them whether there is a noise ordinance that governs things like this.</p> <p>If you can't get an answer from the office, contact the Borough Council Representative(s) for your ward. Do you know which ward you are in?</p> <p>I understand how annoying it is to be awakened so regularly at 4AM. I once lived somewhere that had garbage pickups three days a week at about 4AM. My solution at the time was to go to bed earlier.</p> (Mar 19, 2008 | post #2)

Dan, which of the two restaurants are you talking about? I visited the Tarentum Station and would wholeheartedly agree that it is a fine dining experience. (http://centralpar kbench.blogspot.co m/2008/01/tarentum -station-opens.htm l) (Jan 15, 2008 | post #2)
Should the public see letters of resignation?
On Thursday the VND carried a story (http://www.pittsb urghlive.com/x/pit tsburghtrib/s_5437 15.html) about a decision of Springdale Council to accept the resignation of two police officers. According to the VND Springdale refuses to identify the officers, and the VND has been forced to file a formal request to see the resignation letters. Today the VND is editorializing on the issue. (http://pittsburgh live.com/x/valleyn ewsdispatch/news/s _543964.html) The letters of resignation might not turn out to be documents the public has a right to read, but I am surprised that Springdale would not even identify the former officers. If the public has no right to know the names of their former police officers, it is a short step to not being allowed to know the names of the current police officers. The notion of having secret police in America is abhorrent. (Dec 22, 2007 | post #1)
