Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis attack recovery time?

I ended up with open surgery because the stuff you drink the day before surgery put too much strain on my colon and it ruptured during the night(extremely painful).Open surgery has not been as bad as I thought it would be - yes there was some pain and discomfort but in the hospital you get the magic button to push for dilaudid so my pain was eased greatly.I did not have to have a bag installed but if you do it is reversible after you heal.I look at it as a small price to pay not to have to suffer through anymore attacks. You are in my prayers Lynn! Diverticulitis attack recovery time?

I am at nearly 6 wks post open surgery and I feel so much better. My attacks lasted for 2 weeks at a time so I too looked forward to surgery.I ate popcorn and whole grain cereal last week for the first time in 8 months. It was great not having to worry about another attack.I feel so normal!! Praise God and His healing power!  (Nov 6, 2011 | post #3209)

I agree with you especially about the friendly bunch!I learned more from the site in a few hours than from all the medical personnel combined.I would like to thank Gillian the most-her knowledge has been a Godsend!  (Oct 25, 2011 | post #10)

Diverticulitis Surgery Complications

Hang in there - I am at 4 weeks and I am still moving slow.Surgery is a big ordeal for our bodies to endure and we need patience to get back on track.Rest is good for you-I still have to nap during the day most days or I turn in really early.I only quit with the pain meds 3 days ago.Prayers are with you!  (Oct 21, 2011 | post #2)

Diverticulitis attack recovery time?

I was told that all the inflammation from the diver could cause those symptoms-swelling of urinary track and inability to GO.Thank God I am now almost 4 weeks post surgery and I am feeling so much better.Strength is slowly returning along with appetite for REAL food.During or before surgery they put a stint in my ureters to keep urine flowing because of all the swelling and it was removed this week.Hopefully I will be able to return to work next week!  (Oct 21, 2011 | post #3047)

I also agree about this forum-endless real life situations that helped me tremendously!I think Gillian had a great surgeon. If the surgeon doesn't explain prcedures and the why?s then you want a second opinion. My md drew pics and explained to me everything that would be involved. He tried lap surgery but ended up having to do open because of an abcess that preforated the night before.I am at 10 days post surgery and feeling better every day. There is pain but I see the light at the end of the tunnel now. While my diet is not restricted I find myself eating smaller amounts at a time.Do not want to feel full and bloated.Bowels are moving almost normally and the pain seems mostly to be soreness from the incisions.I am so far very satisfied with the outcome of my surgery.  (Oct 7, 2011 | post #2915)

Diverticulitis attack recovery time?

HOORAY!!Five days after surgery and I am feeling so much better.Loose bms but the pain is quite tolerable.I had opted for laproscopic but the med I was given to clean my system caused my colon to rupture so my recovery will not be as fast and I have the long incision plus a drainage tube.Just knowing that the chance of another attack is slim to none is great news for me.Will keep posting!  (Oct 2, 2011 | post #2892)

Diverticulitis

oh no another attack!!!

I was definately not pushing surgery on anyone, that has to be personal. While my symptoms have never put me in the hospital, I did respond to those yucky antibiotics but I was in severe pain and discomfort for at least two weeks with each bout of infection not to mention the ill effects from Flagyl. At almost eight weeks(3 attacks in 6 months) of my life of feeling like crap I have taken my GI doc and surgeons advice and opted for the resection.Even with antibiotics'curing'the condition each time you have an infection more damage is done to your colon like the walls thicken and the muscles that 'move your bowels' get to where they do not work as well or so I have read in my research.I know I would not wish this condition on anyone-it is terrible!!Try the diet recommended in this forum and I hope you feel better soon!  (Sep 17, 2011 | post #5)

Diverticulitis

oh no another attack!!!

You might want to find another GI doc...mine said affter having attacks in April,May,and Sept. that I needed to see a surgeon so I am scheduled for a resection on the 27th.The surgeon said that their office required one of two things had to have occured-3 close attacks within a year or an attack so severe that it required hospitalization.I am definately not looking forward to the surgery but I do want to get rid of this painful condition.Good luck to you!  (Sep 16, 2011 | post #2)

Yes I am having the same lap surgery done and I will continue to post.Right now the pain has started again in my lower stomach so I must have eaten something that I was not supposed to.I will be glad when all this is over and I do not have to be so careful as to watch what I eat.  (Sep 8, 2011 | post #2743)

Diverticulitis attack recovery time?

I am feeling so much better now but the fear of another attack lingers over me! I have an appointment with a surgeon next week and I hope that surgery will correct/prevent any further attacks. It is a tough decision to go for surgery when you are not in the middle of an attack.I so pray that I will make the right decision and 'cross to the other side'.During the attack I was almost willing to let my husband(no medical exp.)do the surgery just for some relief. Thanks to all of you for sharing your stories and experience with this dreaded disease,it has been a great help to me!Will keep posting!  (Sep 3, 2011 | post #2718)
