McCain's 96-year-old mother starts 10-city tour

Gawd it's sickening. He pushes his ancient mother out on the campaign trail and Todd parades around with the retarded infant. Shameless use of human props.  (Oct 30, 2008 | post #19)

NAACP sues governor over election readiness

It's not purely an issue of economics. Blacks and women have been systematically opressed and excluded from exercising their civil rights in this country. That's why there are organizations like NAACP and NOW. Pretty much like why there is a state of Israel. Zionism was a response to the opression of the Jews. Some say that Zionism = racism. I'm not sure that's not the same as saying NAACP = racism.  (Oct 30, 2008 | post #156)

NAACP sues governor over election readiness

If the Republican party was only concerned with whites and whites only they would be the NAACP." -- what does that mean? Do you mean "they would be just like the NAACP, except for whites?" Granted, prior to 1964, most Republican pols were on the side of civil rights, but that changed with Nixon's "Southern Strategy" that was successful in winning over most southern conservative Democrats to the Republican party and began the marginaliation of moderate Republicans. Beginning in 1948, there had been a general erosion of convservative southern Democrats away from the party. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, ran for president on the Dixiecrat ticket -- his slogan "Segregation now, segregation forever." In 1964, he became a Republican. Quoting from The New Georgia Encyclopedia, "Although the Dixiecrats immediately dissolved after the 1948 election, their impact lasted much longer. Many white voters who initially cast Dixiecrat ballots gravitated back toward the Democratic Party only grudgingly, and they remained nominal Democrats at best. Ultimately, the Dixiecrat movement paved the way for the rise of the modern Republican Party in the South. Many former Dixiecrat supporters eventually became Republicans, as was highlighted by Strom Thurmond's conversion in the 1960s. I guess I should have said "modern Republican party" in my original post.  (Oct 29, 2008 | post #95)

State board: Ignore phony ad, vote on Nov. 4

Actually, Election Day happens to be the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which, if you apply your copious intellect, you will understand that that means it's not always the first Tuesday in November. And by the way, federal elections are held on Election Day every two years, not every year. Taking some time off from tutoring Gov. Sarah on civics, eh?  (Oct 28, 2008 | post #35)

Boy, 8, fatally shoots self in head while trying out Uzi ...

Regarding your second point, I disagee with your logic, i.e. that something should not be termed a "weapon" until it is used to harm someone. By that reasoning, "Little Boy" - the first atomic bomb - could not have been termed a weapon until after it was exploded. In my view, there are two types of weapons: 1) items which are designed for the specific purpose of killing or harming people, e.g. Uzis, bayonets, brass knuckles etc. 2) items which have been designed for purposes other than killing or harming people e.g. rifles, shotguns, kitchen knives, baseball bats (as you point out),that have been used to harm an individual in a specific instance. Uzis are clearly weapons.  (Oct 28, 2008 | post #48)

Should America go back to having prayer in schools?

Government sponsored prayers are not relevant in public schools. The U.S. is not a Christian nation. We have no national religion, the last time I checked.  (Oct 14, 2008 | post #40)

Should America go back to having prayer in schools?

It's simple. You want your kids to pray in school? Send them to a religous school.  (Oct 14, 2008 | post #26)

If you are going to play smug grammarian, at least get it right. There is no such thing as a conjunctive verb. There are conjunctive adverbs such as "therefore, " which join two independent clauses. "You're" is a contraction of "you" and "are." I live for moments like this.  (Oct 13, 2008 | post #182)
