Toyota Tundra sales up a WHOPPING 56%!!

The Tundra, and now the Tacoma are built right here in San Antonio. What a great neighbor, and godsend to the city Toyota has become! I will never buy a Tundra or even a Tacoma, because they have both become way too big, but for people tha need that much truck, they are the best money can buy.  (Feb 5, 2011 | post #4)

Toyota president speaks to drop in sales

God bless Mr. Toyoda. If the UAW ever infected a Toyota plant, I would definitely NOT buy a car from that plant! Toyota will prosper from this way overblown setback. The WORST Toyota is still way better than the best Detroit 3 offering.  (Feb 5, 2011 | post #14)

Hyundai Sonata up an AMAZING 150%!!!

The Hyundai Sonata is not only a good reliable car, it is pretty! It's the first car in decades that I think is nice looking. The Sonata will probably be the next new car in my garage. UAW statement to locals

The UAW is the root of ALL of the Detroit 3's problems. If they could just do away with that one giant albatross they have, they could afford to use better quality components, pay for better engineering, and have quality work done by workers that are more interested what they CAN do for the company, instead of what they won't, or can't do. Unions breed mediocrity, and when they are give free rein as long as the UAW has, mediocre is an improvement. I do not blame the Detroit 3 for closing plants here, and building more in Mexico. Even THAT is not enough of a wake up call for the union slugs to realize that they need to do good work, and be less greedy if they want to keep their jobs.  (Sep 14, 2007 | post #2)

Honda becomes fifth automaker to suspend Mexico production

The big difference is Honda builds cars in Mexico for the Mexican market. That's good business. Ford makes Ford Fusions and other models, GM makes Cadillac Escalades and other models, and Chrysler makes Dodge Ram trucks, and other models in Mexico for the AMERICAN market! Not that it is bad either. ALL the Mexican made Detroit 3 vehicles are WAY better built than their US built counterparts. In fact, the ONLY GM car I would EVER consider would be the Chevrolet HHR. I like it's looks VERY much, and it has an average frequency of repair record for it's first year. All HHRs are built in Mexico. When I say I would consider one, it would have to sell new for less than $10,000, and GM would have to put a loaner car clause in the warranty. Toyota credits Americans for success

He should have thanked the Detroit 3 for building such bad cars for so long that 50% of their buyers have jumped ship. If Detroit built good cars, their market share in the US would be 10% or less. I am glad to see that W Edwards Deming got recognized. He helped make Japan the most respected nation in manufacturing, from dead last after World War II. He is one of my personal heroes. It took me many years to come to my senses about Japanese products. I am old enough to remember when "Made In Japan" meant shoddy. Now, whether it's electronics, automobiles, or anything manufactured, a Japanese logo on the product is a mark of quality and prestige. If the Detroit 3 want to turn themselves around, and stop being a world wide laughing stock, they need to lose their arrogance, and do business the way SUCCESSFUL companies do business. The humility that Mr Toyoda expressed is stark contrast to the arrogance the Detroit 3 displays!  (Sep 12, 2007 | post #4)

Half a century ago, who'd have thought?

The first Toyopets were totally wrong for the American road. They were slow, ugly, and noisy. They were EXTREMELY durable though. Toyota temporarily withdrew from the American market and came out with the Corona. It was like any American car except it was smaller, got more MPG, and was reliable. Slowly but surely people bought Toyotas and realized how reliable and durable they were. Word of mouth spread, and Toyota and Datsun became more and more popular every year until they overtook Volkswagen's decades long #1 import spot away from them in 1975. Toyota's unending quest for quality has now made them the worlds largest automaker, and the number 2 automaker in the United States! I don't think ANYONE would have thought that back in 1957, not even Eiji Toyoda himself! "Made In Japan" after World War II had just about the same negative connotation as what the Detroit 3 are now suffering through. A wonderful American genius named W. Edwards Deming helped Japan earn their reputation for quality, and is considered a hero in Japan. When Dr. Deming went to American businesses first, he was shown the door! Thankfully for ALL of us, Toyota, Honda, and the rest of the Japanese car makers are still selling high quality vehicles to discerning buyers. They are giving GREAT paying jobs to people who are willing to give a good days work for a good days pay, and they are bringing more industry to the United States, and are benefiting the communities lucky enough to be blessed with one of their plants. 23000 seek jobs at Honda

I have ignored Root since I have been back on this forum. The first 70plyRR post I read had a distinct odor to it, and we know it's Roots! I am just delighted that more and more QUALITY cars are going to be built in the USA, more DECENT HARD WORKING Americans will be employed well, making good salaries, Greenburg, Indiana will prosper beyond it's wildest dreams, and more customers will get to realize what quality is, and what they have been missing all these years. It's really fitting that Indiana, home of the Studebaker is getting all these jobs. The Detroit 3 pulled every dirty trick in the books to quash their independent AMERICAN competitors. South Bend took a BIG hit when Studebaker folded. Now karma has caught up with the Detroit 3.  (Sep 10, 2007 | post #14)

Top 10 Fuel Misers

I WILL be doing better than 200,000 miles in the future! I have absolutely NO plans of letting this little truck go! I've owned it 14 years, and it has given EXCELLENT service. I can honestly see it having 400,000 miles in 13 more years, and still giving great service. I HATE the way the compact truck has been enlarged by ALL car makers. The result has been poor MPG, and a lot more room taken up in parking lots and the highway.  (Sep 9, 2007 | post #46)

50 Worst Cars of All Time

The 10 worst cars I ever came across were: 1. The Chevrolet Vega. My sister in law had one, and it had absolutely NOTHING going for it. From the all aluminum engine with no cylinder sleeves to the mediocre MPG and lackluster performance, it was a dog and a half! The air cleaner didn't even have a replaceable cartridge! She had to buy an expensive all new housing when the filter needed changing. Constant problems and breakdowns on this 1977 model. 2. Plymouth Acclaim. In 1990 I bought my last Detroit 3 car EVER! I bought the top of the line LX model. It was loaded....with a LOT of bad quality parts, electronics, and especially the infamous Chrysler A604 transmission. Literally from day one parts fell off, wore out quickly, gummed up, turned themselves on or off. The car seemed haunted by the devil himself. ABSOLUTELY the biggest POS I ever owned! 3. Chevrolet Monza. My poor father in law bought the Monza for his next younger daughter to take to college after the Chevy dealer told him it was a lot better than the Vega he had bought for the other daughter. It was better, but not by much. The dealer made a fortune on the car itself, and the repairs it constantly required. 4. VW Rabbit. I bought a top of the line 1978 GERMAN BUILT "Champagne Edition" VW Rabbit. I had good luck with a few Beetles I had owned, and EXCELLENT service from a 1972 Squareback. This car swore me off VWs forever! A total POS in almost every way. It's sole saving grace was great MPG, and nice performance. 5. Fiat 128. A friend of mine bought a 1973 Fiat 128. It was priced nicely, was comfortable, handled well, got spectacular MPG, and overheated almost from day one. Parts were expensive and hard to come by. 6. Chevy Citation. The same poor soul that had the Fiat traded it in for a 1980 Chevy Citation. It WAS a first year car, but the later year Citations had just as many problems. About the only problem he didn't have with it is that it didn't overheat! I think the Citation was the most recalled car model in history. 7. Ford Tempo. That same friend traded the Citation in on a Ford Tempo. While it was MUCH better than the Citation or Fiat, he had that car at the dealer for LOTS of niggling problems. I am happy to report that this friend FINALLY discovered Toyota, and has had good luck ever since! 8. Austin America. I had a girlfriend that had a 1969 Austin America. It drove and handled beautifully. It was the first front wheel drive car I ever drove. I remember opening the hood to check the oil one day and was SHOCKED to see it had a transverse engine! I had never seen one before, and I thought it, or I was crazy! The car needed way too much maintenance and upkeep, required PREMIUM fuel (35.9 in 1969), and had hard to find parts (even oil filters). It had terrible carburetor problems from day one, and backfired a lot. It never left us stranded, but it sure spent a lot of time at the dealer. 9. Ford Pinto. My dad bought a brand new 1972 Ford Pinto station wagon. While WAY better than the Vega, the Pinto was even SLOWER, and it had the optional 2.0 litre engine! The dash cracked within a year, and it was garage kept except for when my dad was at work! It got around 20 mpg which was TERRIBLE! My 1972 VW Squareback had plenty of get up and go and gave 28 mpg. The engine vibrated annoyingly at idle, and dieseled like crazy when the ignition was turned off. 10. Chevy Corvair. I had three friends with Corvairs back in the 60s. None of them were great, but one was especially bad. It had twin carburetors, and it was virtually impossible to get them synchronized well. It went through fan belts like crazy, leaked more oil than it used, and developed a carbon monoxide leak in the heater's heat exchanger that could have easily killed my friend, except the smell of exhaust was pretty powerful too! The Corvair had a 9 year run, and none of these weaknesses were ever addressed.  (Sep 8, 2007 | post #3)

Top 10 Fuel Misers

A friend of mine at work has a CRX. It now has over 400,000 miles on it. He drives the wheels off that car and it just keeps coming back for more! It was originally dark blue, but he recently had it painted a much lighter shade of blue. It looks great! He did have a complete engine rebuild at 300,000+ miles, but with the new paint job, and the rebuilt engine, the car is like new again. He never wants to get rid of his CRX, just like I am with my Nissan truck. They're so reliable and long lived, they become like a good friend or member of the family.  (Sep 8, 2007 | post #37)

Top 10 Fuel Misers

Yes, my 1993 Nissan pickup. It's not Japanese though, it was built in Smyrna, Tennessee. It has over 200,000 miles on it, and has cost me less than $300 in repairs. Besides tires and batteries, I've had to replace a starter, shocks, and a windshield washer motor. It still has it's original brakes, though it is getting close to time to replace them, and I have never had to add freon to the MUCH used A/C system. Yesterday I replaced both ORIGINAL sealed beam headlights on it. One of them got hit by a flying rock and broke. Since I had to take the grille off to replace it, I went ahead and replaced the other one too! If you're trying to calculate the age of my truck, I bought it new in August 1993, and it is now September 2007. 2007-1993=14 years!  (Sep 8, 2007 | post #34)

Why cant people give Detroit a chance?

The Ford Fusion is an EXCELLENT car. Of course, it's a Mazda design, and built in Mexico. The Chrysler PT Cruiser has a good reliability record, considering it's an American make, and it's made in Mexico. The later Ford Escorts had a fair frequency of repair record, and it was powered by Mazda engines made in Mexico. I know of no GM car that is reliable or as well built as any Asian make, no matter where it is made. I think it's the PEOPLE that make Detroit cars so bad. The engineers, and especially the UAW. The quality of the materials, especially on the inside are definitely lacking. The build quality of cars built in Detroit is atrocious, and the problems that crop up after the first year just keeps snowballing. Bill Ford made the best decision of his life not to leave an important car like the Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan/Lincoln Zephyr to the UAW to ruin. For THAT decision, I think Bill Ford was on to something, and should have been kept on as the boss of Ford. The Fusion has now gone over TWO years with very few problems. It's certainly a record in the last 40 or so years of the American car industry. I and the people I know that have made the switch away from the Detroit 3 have done it because they were burned more than once. Most made excuses for the car like it must've been built on a Monday, or other typical excuse, but when the next one, and the next one were just as bad, and the dealers, and zone representatives would give the "they all do that" excuse, and send us on our way, we finally said enough is enough. The Japanese makes I have owned have given me EXCELLENT service. If something did go wrong, the dealer would APOLOGIZE, and fix it in a timely manner. They treat me like I want to be treated. EXAMPLE: One of the balancing weights came off my Corolla's front tire about three weeks after I got it. I took it to the dealer, they not only apologized and fixed it, they washed the car, and topped off the gas tank! I never got that kind of treatment from any Detroit dealer I dealt with over the years! The MANY trips those heaps made to the dealer were acted upon with the same indifference, and half assed work that the cars received by the UAW slugs that "assembled " them. They CAN change, but I think the "Detroit mentality" is too ingrained in Michigan. My Corolla WAS assembled by UAW workers, and believe me, I was leery of buying it for only that reason, but I did some research, and found out a lot about the UAW workers in Fremont,CA and how Toyota runs that plant. The Corolla is also one of the highest rated cars for dependability by Consumer Reports, so I took the chance. It's paid off. My Tennessee made 1993 Nissan truck continues to be the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. When cars crossed the $10,000 mark, people wanted their money's worth. Only the Japanese manufacturers, and now Hyundai too, deliver it. If an employee I once trusted turned thief and stole from me again and again, and got fired, came to my office and said he had seen the errors of his ways, and would like to come in and apply for his job back, my office door would slam into his face and break his nose! The same goes for Detroit. The "thievery " has gone on too long, and it will take decades even if they DO start selling decent cars again to regain their losses  (Sep 8, 2007 | post #2)
