How a magnet turned off my speech

Hmmm, fiddling with brain function in a basement of a lab. Just what are those Brits doing over there, anyway? jk, nifty non-invasive way to find functional areas of the brain.  (May 18, 2008 | post #3)

"Pulsars like this are why you do these surveys" - David Champi...

I like Dr. Champion's attitude, just looking for weird stuff. You sure don't have to look far - just go to downtown Ferndale.  (May 18, 2008 | post #12)

How Much Warming Would It Take To Turn Earth Into Venus?

It was fabulous! Your luck wishes worked. The boys had a great time, it only rained a little, we did a lot of fishing, hiking, outdoor cooking, Leave No Trace practice. We had a blast. We had a kids vs. parents kickball game and that was the most fun. Thanks for asking.  (May 18, 2008 | post #13)

What Makes Cells Tick? Reverse Engineering Biological Cycles

I wonder, though, if the gene they isolated that they think orchestrates all this, really does, or just starts it. When I took biochem (over a score of years ago, I'm with ya, Cash), I learned that these processes go in order because they build on one another. In other words, each process needs the previous one to finish, before it can proceed. In addition, all that dressing & undressing is just getting the protein ready to be used when it is needed. Interesting, but it seems like they found one answer and are pinning all these cycles on the one answer.  (May 18, 2008 | post #12)

I agree, you're very cool. At least they didn't blame it on "man-induced global warming".  (May 18, 2008 | post #11)

"Lost" Science Debunked

You may be right, but there's so much stupid, unreal, violent, gorey, inane bullshit on TV, I'll take "silly" any day. So, which station do you think has the black hole?  (May 6, 2008 | post #8)

Study links breastfeeding to increased intelligence

Another bullshit study. This forum will soon be filled with posts showing exceptions to this data. There are WAY too many variables in this type of study, and they cannot all be controlled. Cash, you can do better than this.  (May 6, 2008 | post #19)

Great news - you may need math in your life

Good gosh I could write a book on this! I think women are generally worse at math because they try to be more exact, and have more difficulty doing complex equations mentally, myself included. Give me a pencil and paper, and I can figure anything out. Men, on the other hand, don't worry about accuracy and can mentally estimate better and faster than women. I'm not saying that either is better in math. I beat my genius brother on the SAT's by 10 points (720/800); however he's still smarter in general than I am. Rote learning is a must. Multiplication tables MUST be memorized in order to continue learning new math concepts. Each math concept MUST be either learned or memorized at each appropriate grade level, or your math is shot to hell for life. I've seen this so many times. Yes I was a math teacher at one time, and I'm appalled at the mathematical ineptitude of Americans. I was ordered to "make my grading curve bigger so more kids will pass algebra, because the school board would never approve of so many kids flunking algebra". Then I quit teaching. I will NOT be party to this abhorrent practice of pushing kids through the system just to appease some damn board. I check all my kids' homework, ESPECIALLY math. Math itself is important in life, not just for numbers knowledge, but also for essential problem solving skills. Oh, but you say they can use calculators. I say, be independent. I can survive without electricity and batteries; can you? Sorry about the long post, but this is VERY important to me.  (May 6, 2008 | post #4)

Are There Missing Pieces to the Human Genome Project?

Haha! Just when we humans think we know it all, a Higher Power comes and mixes it all up! I think it's just Nature screwing with us.  (May 6, 2008 | post #1)
