Why does the Old Testament not apply?

I'm not talking about commands only. What about cursing youths that mock you in the name of the Lord so that bears come to maul them?  (May 29, 2013 | post #124)

**Christians!! Please don't feed the Atheists***

Wouldn't it be unfair to punish a Christian for the transgressions of his/her ancestors if he/she hasn't performed the same deed?  (May 29, 2013 | post #548)

Why Christians want others to believe

God's principles? You haven't said anything that cannot exist without religion. Courage and strenght is found outside religion you know?  (May 8, 2013 | post #241)

Why Christians want others to believe

It's impossible for me to refute that, but I don't have to believe unless you can prove it. It isn't impossible for you to prove it though, so get to it. Explain how an entire nation of believers can still commit atrocities towards humanity and at the same time your statement holds true.  (May 7, 2013 | post #222)

Why does the Old Testament not apply?

My parents were Christian. What they said concerned me deeply. It influenced my way of thinking and took its toll on the development of my critical thinking capabilities. For a long time, I was very gullible and susceptible to swindle. I had to put a lot of effort into building critical thinking skills I should have developed a long time ago. My parents were only doing what they thought was best for me, but when I started to exhibit behavioral problems they didn't know how to help. I had to bring myself out of it, and the poor bastards had to stand me at my most insufferable. It's a long story so I won't go into full detail, but if I had children I'd try to raise them differently. So to answer your question, I care what parents tell their children because it will influence them invariably towards a specific belief system that doesn't evolve with the changing times as it should.  (Apr 28, 2013 | post #19)

Why does the Old Testament not apply?

As long as your previous comment is, it's blatantly oversimplified. The main problem with religion is that it's taught to children way before they have the ability to analyze it critically. Even then, children always ask questions regarding the crazy stuff in the Old Testament because of how little sense it makes. Their parents then proceed to discourage this questioning. Do you know where else you're not allowed to question authority? If you said 'military' you're correct. You can't go against your superior's orders; if you do it's insubordination. It may not include war crimes, but nowadays where is the line drawn? Suddenly, what seems like an archaic solution to modern problems is instead the cause of the problem. The problem isn't religion in its entirety, it's how it is taught. Unfortunately, religion isn't taught in an objective manner.  (Apr 28, 2013 | post #17)

So no animal sacrifices or anything ceremonial, but everything else is okay?  (Apr 27, 2013 | post #14)

Something we can learn from criminal investigation...

There's a particular factor we tend to ignore in argumentation; taking it into account can greatly improve our debating efficacy. It's motive. Going against the law can be problematic for most, so the culprit usually has a damn good reason for doing it. Finding out what that reason is can help the plausibility in cases against criminals. However, intellectual dishonesty isn't a crime, so we get to see it displayed blatantly in any debate. Ask yourself, do you have a damn good reason to believe in God? Maybe religion helped you out of drugs; maybe it gave you a sense of purpose in your formerly empty life; maybe you hope to be reunited with loved ones in heaven. Whatever the reason may be, if it isn't, "God is real, here's a picture of him curing AIDS" then perhaps we shouldn't so eagerly believe. There are argumentative "culprits " in both sides of the fence. Maybe an atheist feels guilty for one of his actions so he tries to tell himself God doesn't exist, when he doesn't actually believe it.  (Apr 26, 2013 | post #1)

Hilarious. And I don't suppose you're willing to admit the Bible is outdated, are you?  (Apr 26, 2013 | post #12)
