Is a Suicide Epidemic Ravaging Gay Mormon Youth?

"While LGBT youth think about and attempt suicide more often than their straight counterpart, most LGBT youth do not attempt suicide. LGBT youth have many of the same risk factors as straight youth, but many LGBT have more or more severe risk factors. It is important to note that being LGBT is not a risk factor in and of itself; however, the minority stressors that LGBT individual encounter - such as discrimination and harassment - are directly associated with suicidal behavior as well as indirectly with risk factors for suicide." (American Association of Suicidology) Whether this particular law has had any effect does not change the fact the policies, statements, and actions of the church stigmatize and dehumanize all gay people, contributing to the stress which leads some to self destructive behavior, including suicide. It is especially hardest on young people who have not yet learned better, and overcome the harmful effects of ignorance and prejudice.  (Feb 1, 2016 | post #10)

Colo. gay discrimination alleged over wedding cake

"Another Midrash says that males just didn’t sodomize other males, but that they signed ketobot (marriage contracts) legalizing these re-lationships. " (BRIEF OF WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH AS AMICUS CURIAE IN SUPPORT OF NEITHER PARTY SUGGESTING REVERSAL) While same sex marriages may not be clear in the bible, Jewish writings show same sex couples were getting married before Moses. Even WBC admits that fact. It is nothing new, just not always popular in all places at the same time. Yet even if it was new, a history of discrimination is not a rational reason to continue discrimination in the present.  (Jan 14, 2016 | post #33985)

Decades of failed attempts to change sexual orientation have shown it can be suppressed for periods of time, but the attractions remain. Even imprisonment and torture do not work. Only some bisexual people can be happy committed to a person of the opposite sex, but most understand their attractions remain. Meanwhile, these programs continue to cause guilt, suffering, and even death when clients realize their attractions have not changed.  (Jan 13, 2016 | post #4)

Justicea s gay marriage order halts licenses in parts of ...

"A second principal in this Court's jurisprudence is that the right to marry is fundamental because it supports a two-person union unlike any other in its importance to the committed individuals." (p.13) "It is now clear that the challenged laws burden the liberty of same-sex couples, and it must be further acknowledged that they abridge central precepts of equality. Here the marriage laws enforced by the respondents are in essence unequal: same-sex couples are denied all of the benefits afforded to opposite sex couples and are barred from exercising a fundamental right. Especially against a long history of disapproval of their relationships, this denial to same-sex couples of the right to marry works a grave and continuing harm. The imposition of this disability on gays and lesbians serves to disrespect and subordinate them. And the Equal Protection Clause, like the Due Process Clause, prohibits this unjustified infringement of the fundamental right to marry. These considerations lead to the conclusion that the right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person, and under the Due Process and Equal Protections Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment couples of the same-sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty." World Anglicans meet amid gay division

You ignore the context of pagan ritual sex orgies, common at the time. You also ingore the Romans weren't Jews or new Christians yet, and sex with men including male prostitutes was normal for them. You also ignore the pais of the Roman Centurians were often lovers. You ignore the story of Johnathan and David, and that of Naomi and Ruth, which is often used during wedding ceremonies. Dr. James B. Nelson, Professor of Christian Ethics, United Theological Seminary: "what the Bible forbids is acts of lust, rape, idolatry, violation of religious purity obligations, or pederasty, but not condemnation of homosexuality in relationships of mutual respect and love."  (Jan 12, 2016 | post #32)

Panel wants study of family structure in foster care, but...

Science has already confirmed what observation and common sense should tell you: The most important variable is the relationship between parent and child, not gender or family structure. Dr Eggebeen (witness against marriage equality) also conceded that "gay and lesbian couples can , and do, make excellent parents" "that they are capable of raising a healthy child", and "that children of same sex couples would be helped if their families had access to or were able to receive benefits of marriage". Dr. Charlotte Patterson: there was "no data or research which establishes that gay fathers and lesbian mothers are less capable of being good parents than non-gay people." Dr. David Brodzinsky: "The issue is not the structural variable, biological versus nonbiological, one parent versus two parent. The issue is really the process variables, how children are cared for, is the child provided warmth, is the child provided consistency of care, is the child provided a stimulated environment, is the child given support.... and when you take a look at structural variables, there's not all that much support that structural variable in and of themselves are all that important." Dr. Pepper Shwartz: "the primary quality of parenting is not the parenting structure, or biology, but is the nurturing relationship between parent and child." Unfortunately, Kansas is not well known for placing science over prejudice.  (Jan 12, 2016 | post #3)

Your personal abuse of the two authors fails to change the fact the original texts addressed pagan prostitutes of both sexes used in pagan fertility ritual orgies. Jesus never condemned committed same sex relationships, and healed the pais of the Centurian without questioning their love. Baptist Rev Dr. William R. Stayton, Divinity degree from Andover Newtown Theological School and on faculty of LaSalle University's Grad program in Religious studies: - "There is nothing in the Bible regarding homosexual orientation. In fact, the Bible does not concern itself with sexual orientation. It does speak against gang rape, male prostitution for religious purposes, and pederasty. I lead bible study programs on this subject and am convinced that the Bible does not address the issue of a person's sexual orientation." Dr. James B. Nelson, Professor of Christian Ethics, United Theological Seminary: "what the Bible forbids is acts of lust, rape, idolatry, violation of religious purity obligations, or pederasty, but not condemnation of homosexuality in relationships of mutual respect and love."  (Jan 11, 2016 | post #22)

Gay wedding cake at center of Colorado Appeals Court case

You rely on a false premise: Selling a cake does not "recognize, support, participate and celebrate the institution of" any marriage. The vendor is not a participant. Your waiter is not your dinner guest, and the baker is not participating in your event. His approval of you is not required to do the job he chose to do for money. He is working for profit. He is not selling approval. I'm sure many vendors do not approve of all of their customers. The First Amendment does not give you the right to harm others. Just as you can't stone them even when the bible says you should, you can't harm them by denial of their freedom and civil right of equal access to public accommodations. You may segregate in your home, church, and private club, but not in the public marketplace.  (Jan 11, 2016 | post #3344)

World Anglicans meet amid gay division

Archbishop Desmond Tutu: "Hate has no place in the house of God. No one should be excluded from our love, our compassion or our concern because of race or gender, faith or ethnicity -- or because of their sexual orientation. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people are part of so many families. They are part of the human family. They are part of God's family. And of course they are part of the African family. But a wave of hate is spreading across my beloved continent. People are again being denied their fundamental rights and freedoms. That this pandering to intolerance is being done by politicians looking for scapegoats for their failures is not surprising. But it is a great wrong. An even larger offense is that it is being done in the name of God. Show me where Christ said "Love thy fellow man, except for the gay ones." Gay people, too, are made in my God's image. I would never worship a homophobic God. The wave of hate must stop. Politicians who profit from exploiting this hate, from fanning it, must not be tempted by this easy way to profit from fear and misunderstanding. And my fellow clerics, of all faiths, must stand up for the principles of universal dignity and fellowship. Exclusion is never the way forward on our shared paths to freedom and justice."  (Jan 11, 2016 | post #8)

Many religious scholars understand the words mistranslated to "homosexual " were referencing pagan shrine prostitutes of both sexes, not those in committed same sex relationships. Your belief being a true Christian relies on harming gay people in contradiction of the golden rule, is your choice of belief, not anything said by Jesus. "What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality " by Daniel Helminiask, PH.D., was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1967 and is incardinated in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. From 1981-1985 was Assoc Prof for Systematic Theology at Oblate School of Theology and earlier completed his Ph.D. in systematic theology at Boston College and Andover Newton Theological School. He concludes the Bible says absolutely nothing about homosexuality being sinful when you examine the actual Hebrew/Greek texts." "Several books already exist attempting to demonstrate that the Christian Bible does not, in fact, condemn consenting-adult homosexuality. But "God is Not a Homophobe" has a unique perspective in that the author has a lifetime of experience in pastoring hard-core fundamentalist churches. His former bitter opposition to all forms of homosexuality has given way to a rational, unbiased acceptance that the Bible says hardly anything about homosexuality, and what it does say cannot honestly be used to condemn consenting same-sex unions."
