Because Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States and was granted commonwealth status in 1952. The Jones-Shafroth Act, enacted in 1917, conferred U.S. citizenship to Puerto Ricans. So, if you don't like that, take it up with the United States government. Furthermore, illegal alien doesn't mean Hispanic. It could mean any person of any race. And I agree with a lot of what you've just said here. I once had surgery (outpatient), and for some reason, my insurance kept denying the anesthesiologist bill. (The anesthesia company was billing it wrong, causing my insurance to deny it more than once). The next thing I know, a deputy sheriff showed up at my house for me to appear in court because I was being sued by the anesthesia company. If I were an illegal alien, I wouldn't have had to worry about the bill. In the end, my insurance ended up paying it because the anesthesia company finally billed it correctly. However, I will never forget how angry and disillusioned I felt. (Mar 7, 2008 | post #29)
Whether they are or not, it is absolutely a travesty that an AMERICAN CITIZEN will be sued for not paying his or her hospital bill, and a person who is not even a citizen of this country gets a free pass. Why not? The guy in question keeps talking about illegal Puerto Ricans and sending them back to Puerto Rico. First of all, they're American citizens.
