Questions for theists

You are saying the glass is half emptyI remember those commercials and the Civil Defense commercials testing TV station transmission, notifying users to go to the nearest shelter in the event of an attack. Many built bomb shelters in their yards. Those were the Cold War daysI agree with the lesson but that was not a new lesson by any means. WW1 was one of the most atrocious wars in modern time. The League of Nations was formed to help prevent another such war. That didn't work for various reasons. After the worst war, WW2, United Nations was formed and this time with real teeth. Wars continued but some were prevented. In balance, United Nations is beneficial. I think we need to keep an eye on Iran, continue sanctions, prepare for defensive measures. We made enough of a mess in the Middle EastMany helped and many were helped after Katrina. At this point, those wanting help are those who refuse to accept the new reality of living in an area prone to major disasters. Did hell come during the last ice age?  (May 11, 2007 | post #234)

Questions for theists

That's fine but not every nurse is a theist or spiritualGranted, some progressives and liberals do but typically they are extremists. When changes are implemented in society, more moderate minds prevailHow do you tolerate and not accept in any way? Is that logicalPeople who have friends of another race can also be racist. Friendship does not necessarily indicate a lack of bigotry. More likely it's a distant friendship or at arm's length.  (May 11, 2007 | post #233)

Questions for theists

Some of your posts over the last several months indicate differentlyBetter to give bags of food or clothing rather than cash that would feed a habitIt's not that we have problems but how they are handled. Societies are best when conservative and liberal points of view reach a reasonable balance. You have expressed enough points of view to indicate you also have problems with people of various groups. It's part of human nature and even those who feel they are free of prejudice have some at subliminal levels. I don't think you are a Nazi but small acts of kindness don't compensate bigotry. As for laws in NJ, why didn't your governor use the seat belt? I can accept the vehicle exceeding the speed limit for official business, but the seat beltDo you think the overwhelming majority of about 4 billion (2/3 of global population) non-Christians in the world will agree with you? Not all Christians will agree with you because your notions of good and evil are not shared by everyoneIt's a moot point, everyone is imperfectBeing true to one's self is essential. I also value Socrates' advice, know thyself. Christianity demands more as you know, being true to God, Jesus, and others. You raised a good point about Bill Wilson. He certainly made a positive difference for so many. But notice that his addiction was not eliminated, it was transferred. That's not a necessarily bad change.  (May 11, 2007 | post #232)

I asked with a sarcastic tone not expecting you to answer. Text communication does not always convey tone as you knowThat parable applies anywhere, it could be the luck of the draw or circumstances. My question on death was about premature death. There are no guarantees, that's understood but religion fails to adequately explain the reasons for premature death other than "It's God's willIn the context of religion it makes sense. However no one knows with certainty if there is a spiritual after life. The Hindus have an interesting one that involves reincarnation and Nirvana, as you know. Is the Christian notion of after life any more valid that the HindusEisenhower deserves more credit for his leadership skills than his biblical beliefs. Also we couldn't have defeated the Axis without the European allies and their 4 years of fighting and heavy sacrifices before America entered Europe in WW2. The Germans were in part defeated by their own strategic mistakes. Think what would have happened if Hitler did not invade RussiaGood is not always more powerful than evil and is overcome at every turn. For example, Genghis Khan conquered so many and so much land. His empire was defeated because the number of his troops was inadequate to maintain control of the conquered lands. They bit off more than they could chew. Alexander the Great was viewed as evil by those he conquered. Jesus started a movement but his disciples continued his work and deserve credit as well, perhaps most of the credit. What would Christianity be if no one taught Jesus' teachings? The Roman Empire was not eliminated, it was changed. It transcended to the Byzantine Empire then through gradual weakening, the Romans were went back to Italy defeated by the Ottomans. Over 15 centuries of Roman rule left a lasting impression in Europe and Asia and later the world. Today Italy is one of the strongest economies in the developed world. Christianity phased out the old Roman Empire but the Romans are alive and well, their influence exists on all continents if not in every country.  (May 11, 2007 | post #231)

The existence or non-existence of God is not an issue to be decided by a few and the rest will follow. The ABC debate on evolution and God was interesting. However, it would be wrong to expect its caliber to be similar to that of the Scopes and Dover trials or some landmark decisive meeting of minds. The real debate occurs in the hearts and minds of everyday people experiencing life first hand with its influences, rewards and challenges. The debate continues in dialogs, publications, media, schools, churches, correspondence, meetings, gatherings, blogging, etc. Science, not a synonym for atheism, offers evidence and theories on natural matters but not all answers. Theism, not an antonym for science, offers answers without proof, relying on faith.  (May 10, 2007 | post #16)
