Body found along railroad tracks near Tri-Cities

sorry for your loss, truly am, but as a rail myself, we see trespassers almost weekly. the companies do have several signs posted stated no trespassing. Depending on the area the incindent occurred would determine the speed of the train, also if it was at night or dusk, and if the person was wearing non reflective clothing. Most of the time that we are involved in a pedestrian-train accident, the pedestirian was wearing headphones or was talking on a cell phone and didn't hear the train coming. They tend not to hear the train, and when they realize something is not right, they are unable to get out of the way nor is the train able to stop quickly enough. Locomotives are much bigger than trucks by size and weight, with the tonnage involved with haulage it takes them much more time to stop than the general public realizes. We are not all inhumane, we as employees suffer as well when this stuff happens. it effects us everyday we work when this happens. Trespassing is trespassing, and it's subject to fines and punishment incurred by the owner of the railway. There are some people on thes sites that are very insensitive and can be down right mean. some do it for entertainment, Please understand, you have suffered a great loss and have full entitlement to grieve, but also realize, your son was trespassing and that's a crime, also he put not only himself at risk but also the train crew as well. Once again, sorry for your loss. Nw rail  (Jan 17, 2012 | post #43)

As drugs flow north, UP faces higher fines

Trains that enter the us from Canada at the border between Washington and British Columbia have to run through an ex ray scanner that will see if there some discrepancy in the cargo entering the US or if their is people hiding in the rail cars on the freight trains. Then the border patrol is notified and customs as well  (Dec 16, 2010 | post #4)

Man drove around railroad gates before being struck by train

yeah, have been seeing more and more of these things going to court as civil lawsuits. People don't realize that the train crews are not at fault, it's not like they can just hit the brakes and stop on a dime. it's just pathetic how sue happy we are as a society. I think the crews should sue the families for undue added stress when situations arrize from this. people pull you head out of your rear, if you run the crossing just because you are so impatient. It's like playing russian roulette.  (May 19, 2009 | post #2)

'Monster train' fears rising in suburbs

You may feel I am stirring the pot, I am just providing information to all that with what one rail road does the others follow suit. They all are competing in some way to the next greatest company and at the cost of the general puplic they will stop at nothing to increase profits and have little concern for JOHN Q PUBLIC. BUT continue to go thru life with blinders on and see what will happen in the next 2 to 5 yrs..... When the local government and the railroad come knocking on your door to say you have to move due to expansion for business, then it will only become a major concern  (Apr 14, 2009 | post #476)

'Monster train' fears rising in suburbs

just wait, the Canadian Pacific is running 10000ft trains across Canada, and the BNSF is running 10000ft trains from chicago to Los Angeles on their southern transcon route. They think bigger is better and it makes em more money per capita. And unfortunately railroads helped shape america and everything you buy has been hauled via the rail roads in some part. Either from the ports on container ships to your stores, or via box car, hopper, tanker. Another thing too, majority of the railroad tracks were there long before homes were built. But sounds like most don't know their history or are to ignorant to do the research...  (Apr 11, 2009 | post #448)

CSX leaves city with lonesome railroad blues

government politics at its best. and the impatientness of our society.. here, everyone is always in a hurry, and someone is delaying them from something, but usually absolutely nothing..  (Feb 27, 2009 | post #2)

Train hits man in Boulder; victim hospitalized

We both know that this a typical typographical error by the UNEDUCATED MEDIA. They even say the driver of the train, we have to let them know there are no STEERING WHEELS. But that's the public for ya. Our world is different as you know. And they also expect us to stop at crossings for them, and limit the whistle blowing. Well when the come up with a better driver and more knowledgeable person, then we may make the changes neededkick 'em  (Dec 14, 2008 | post #2)

Teenager Killed By Train In O'Fallon, Illinois

CSX lawsuit

sad situation here that happened. Another young life was taken. until some one reads the police report and all the information provided by the train crew no will actually know. They will only assume. this father is grieving. As many parents do wether or not it was his son's inexperience at driving or the CARRIER'S LACK of responsibility to maintain the right of ways. We do not know. but many who lose some one try to replace them with the almighty dollar for their pain and suffering. The factors at hand was that a young life was taken and a very large well protected company is responsible so to speak for an error in judgement. The train crew was doing their job, other factors may have played into this, there are things called speed tapes and some locomotives have an onboard camera due to situations like this. Where the public will no doubtly place blame on the crews. The trains do not have steering wheels nor a gas pedal or brake pedal. they are controlled by a throttle and the brakes are throttle controlled and it takes roughly a mile for a train traveling at roughly 55 mph to stop, steel on steel depeneding on the length, tonnage and grade of travel. the parents involved have every right to be upset and mourning, but just like everyone else in america it's all about who they can sue to make them suffer for their loss. go after the carrier, hold them responsible, contact the fra, and the ntsb for reports, but negligence upon the crews, hardly their hands are tied and governed by rules upon rules and the fear factors that are implemented on them by tyrant controlling officials. my condolences to the family for their loss. god bless  (Jun 27, 2008 | post #3)

Boy's quick thinking saves mom from train

just shows the sign of how self absorbed and impatient we are as a society. always in a hurry and will blame everyone else for our own demise. kudos for the young boy for quick but dangerous thinking. Hopefully his mother will learn not to rush and make the same mistake again in the future. life is too short. enjoy it while we can.  (May 4, 2008 | post #31)

NS says crack in rail no big deal

you can contact the ntsb (national transportation safety board) or the fra (federal railroad administration) about these issues and see if something can be done. The monitor everything from rails to trains to trucks on safety  (Apr 27, 2008 | post #2)

Train Derailment

typical ignorant redneck. think about every thing you buy is hauled by a train in one way or another. the containers that are brought by ship to the ports then transported to rail and then to truck to be delivered to your famous "WAL MART" or local convience store. the chemicals you use to run your cars or tractors and even the pesticides you use on the farm are transported by rail to the customers and then also by truck.. so Moron eliminate the rails and you get rid of the truckers and then commerce and you have nothing. regarding the annoying horns. We would gladly stop blowing the horn if STUPID people would stay off the tracks or running the gates. But we are required by FEDERAL law to activate the horn so to make sure all those that are too busy in their lives at a crossing will know we are coming gotta love self centered ignorant people  (Apr 27, 2008 | post #4)
