Belle Vernon Area braces for significant tax hike

Thumbs up to Barb Trenk for displaying the sign on Rt. 201 in Washington Twp. protesting increased tax rates and the villains who made it possible.  (Jul 6, 2011 | post #194)

Good luck to "Fed up". You are not alone in having the desire to exit the BVA school system. It almost seems like it would have to take a sucker to buy a home in the BVA school district. The California School District has not raised its school taxes for 11 consecutive school years! It even called back a furloughed teacher! Thumbs up to California School Board and do not care to even dignify the BVA school board.  (Jul 1, 2011 | post #193)

Come around mid -February 2012, it will be just more of the same. The BVA school board cowards will just pass another above the state minimum millage tax rate for the overburdened taxpayers. So what else is new?  (Jul 1, 2011 | post #191)

Perhaps it is time that the BVA school board open up the AD position by forcing Jesse Cramer out.  (Jun 22, 2011 | post #189)

Corner Cupboard of West Newton has excellent fish sandwich.

What do you mean? I had the the Cadillac type fish sandwich (haddock) and my wife had a decent steak sandwich with bottled water and there was still change for a $20 bill. Incidentally, if one were try to go to Red Lobster, just see how often and how much fish (haddock, if they even have it)to serve for the price Corner Cupboard offers. In conclusion, haddock or cod, it is a bargain at Corner Cupboard all the way, hands down.  (Jun 22, 2011 | post #3)

For those fish sandwich lovers, Corner Cupboard (located near Williams Ace Hardware) serves a gigantic beer battered haddock or cod fish sandwich on Fridays. It costs a little more, but cod or haddock is more expensive and better than pollock, whitefish, etc.  (Jun 17, 2011 | post #1)

To "think about it", what several purposes does the mulitplex serve? The argument here is that academics took a backseat to athletics. The old bus garage could have been improved in increments like a 5 year plan for example. The money used to purchase the multiplex should have been allocated for the upcoming educational trends such as strengthening the math, science and technical fields. Athletics are heading in the direction of club sports. No need to further comment on this subject, One needs to pay closer attention to what "FYI" has mentioned in the posting above. If a few of the stubborn BVA school board members would just yield to the rational changes that must be taken, then the cries of merger mania will have faded away.  (Jun 7, 2011 | post #186)

It is just a few of the ironclad BVA school board members that put the taxpayers into dire straits by refusing to do what is necessary to get rid of dead wood in the school system. Not enough action is taken in spite of declining enrollment. This will continue to get worse in the next several years. The merger scenario would disappear if appropriate action is taken now. It would prove that BVA is willing to get its house in order.  (Jun 6, 2011 | post #183)

Unless the old, corrupt, and incompetent inner circle within the BVA school board is eliminated, it would just be more of the same in the BVA school district with no relief in sight.  (Jun 6, 2011 | post #181)

Points are well taken from "think about it".The BVA school board has failed miserably in prioritzing its funds. It foolishly spent money on an unnecessary multi plex along with a ridiculous mural, approving an expensive teacher salary and health contract, etc. The school buses still have to go the old bus garage because that is where the fuel pump is located. Can one imagine the cost of trying to install fuel pumps at the multi plex? It would still make sense to have the state force a merger of BVA, Monessen and Frazier. At least there would some fresh minds from the other school districts to dilute the idiocy at the BVA school board.  (Jun 5, 2011 | post #179)

There is strong disagreement with "second thoughts" about the hypothetical juncture (Belle V ernon, Monessen and Frazier) school districts. First of all, Monessen is graduating only 70 seniors. Frazier can't be that far off that figure. With declining enrollments virtually everywhere, BVA could absorb the extra students. Having a 2 county school system is not a good excuse as BVA is already serves 2 counties. Just look at the immense savings to the taxpayer. About the only negative here would be the increased fuel costs in bussing students at greater distances. The positives far outweigh the negatives. Some eaxamples are fewer buildings needed to house students, Monessen's track and field facility, Frazier's highly touted math program, fewer teachers, administrative staff, clerical, maintenance, improved chances of receiving state and/or federal aid, BVA's central location, etc. The list goes on....  (Jun 5, 2011 | post #177)

There is plenty of dead wood that certainly needs to be addressed. Get rid of all day kindergarten. Eliminate or at least reduce the director of curriculum to part time or on a consultation basis. Get rid of shop at the high school. We bus students to New Stanton Vo-Tech. Have 1 principal spend 1/2 day at both elementary schools. Reduce clerical/staff to 1 per building. Renogotiate both teacher salary and health benefits to more realistic levels. Furlough teachers by consolidating class sizes averaging 25 to 30 students. BVA school district is in bad financial shape. Rising school taxes will only exacerbate the problem. A jointure of Belle Vernon, Frazier and Monessen looms on the horizon. How does Belmonfra School District sound?  (Jun 1, 2011 | post #173)

For Godzak to even be considered for the future superintendent's position would be a conflict of interest. She got the curriculum job while hubby served on the school board and now may pursue the superintendents' job. Isn't that considered double nepotism here? In addition, hubby serves as the road supervisor in Rostarver Township. As a couple they are both milking taxpayer's money. Enough is enough!  (May 25, 2011 | post #170)

This is a typical behind the scenes manuever pulled by the BVA school board. The job was never posted nor was there any announcement of the resignation being made publicly. If Godzak can hold down 2 jobs with the same salary, one has to wonder how time consuming is the curriculum job which pays $91,000. Something does not smell right here and does merit a state investigation for possible ethnics violation and/or improper hiring tactics.  (May 24, 2011 | post #168)

Who do you support for Governor in Pennsylvania in 2010?

What cave do you come from? You are so out of touch with reality. You must be a greedy public union teacher!  (May 19, 2011 | post #2081)
