Will Village Post Office Closings In Connecticut Stamp Ou...

I don't believe that the 'villes and small towns will lose their identity, because the towns themselves won't suddenly disengage themselves from it just because they lost their post office. Unionville wil always be a part of Farmington, Collinsville with Canton, Elmwood with West Hartford, etc.. I know people who bought a house in Unionville a number of years ago and were truly ticked off that their mail was sent to "Unionville " and not "Farmington ". They felt the Unionville address didn;t have the "prestige " of Farmington. They even went so far as to use the Farmington zip code for their Unionville address, which of course, delayed their mail delivery significantly. Such shallowness and stupid behavior. I personally will hate to lose the small local post offices, but progress marches on. It'll be up to the townspeople to keep the 'villes, etc. memories fresh and alive. I think they can do it.  (Jun 24, 2009 | post #4)

What Hiring Freeze? 955 Employees Added To State Payroll ...

Yes, it's a fact. She was on that list of 995 people hired after Rell's "hiring freeze" went into effect. $105K plus benefits. If you don;t believe me, contact the SEBAC office. They have the list with the names and salaries of those who were hired. It's a matter of public record.  (Jun 22, 2009 | post #116)

What Hiring Freeze? 955 Employees Added To State Payroll ...

Among those 995 who were hired after the "freeze" was Shea Ralph to be an assistant coach on the women's $105,000. Was that an "essential " position? Really?  (Jun 22, 2009 | post #10)

Town May Shut Down Skateboarding Park

How about instead of just letting the kids ignore the staff when they're told to wear a helmet or stop being so rowdy, they toss them out of the park? Then the problem is resolved. Gee, there's an idea.  (Jun 20, 2009 | post #5)

Lawmakers Vote To Bail Out UConn Health Center

Stop blaming the Unions and the State employees for the deficit. And stay on topic, which is about the Health Center. Jeezuz.  (Jun 20, 2009 | post #8)

Nearly 3,500 State Workers Take Advantage Of Early Retire...

I've heard there are 50 or so from DMV who are retiring or who already have. Many are unionized workers, which means, as "Concerned " has pointed out, that service at the DMV branches will indeed suffer. And if the rumored closing of the New Britain and another branch come to be, then it'll mean longer waiting times at the remaining branches. It's just the way things are going to be, folks, so get used to it.  (Jun 19, 2009 | post #25)

Southington Police Officer Faces DUI Charge

Well, you must remember that there are the Conn. State Police....and then there's everyone one else who WANTS to be a Trooper, but can't. I can't think of ONE instance where a municipal cop has pulled over an off Trooper. Probably it's because they have off duty use of their cruisers and muni cops are intimidated, even if they see them breaking MV laws.  (Jun 11, 2009 | post #4)

Connecticut Could Lose 150 Small Postal Branches

Canton has 4 Post Offices for less than 10,000 residents. And the USPS did away with the 4 different Zip Codes in town a few years ago, so isn't it really already centralized? Canton is large in square mileage and having branches in Canton Center and North Canton make sense, but why have two (Collinsville and Canton) within 3 miles of each other? What you also have to take into account is the number of businesses in your town as well, because they also receive mail. As for the cost of a first class stamp, I don't think 44 cents is sending anyone to the poor house. And raising it by one or two cents every couple of years isn't a back breaker, either, is it? And as a side note, why is it that people keep dragging politics into every single story they comment on? Leave those comments to the appropriate topics.  (Jun 11, 2009 | post #87)

FBI Releases Records Detailing Last Moments Of George All...

Maybe they saved up for it, maybe it was a wedding present from their parents, maybe they just charged it - who knows. And what's that got to do with anything, anyhow? They went, they got absolutely hammered one night and he did a header off an awning and fell into the water, probably getting sucked under the boat or just drifted out to see. Either way, she's a widow and this is just a sad story. The only lesson to be learned from this is not to get so crocked that you end up doing stupid stuff, like, oh, I don't know - dying.  (Jun 8, 2009 | post #5)

Dave Matthews Band Performs In Hartford

I never understood why DMB's crowds here were so rowdy in the past. Can anyone explain why that was?? I mean, back in the days when I regularly attnded concerts in the area (Dillon Stadium, etc.), arrests weren't all that common - at least not big public displays, anyway.  (Jun 6, 2009 | post #2)

Second Suspect Apprehended In Robbery, Chase, Shootout

Tremendous composure by that woman. She had to have been scared out of her wits, yet managed to actually try and reason with him! And of course, major props to the Farmington PD for another stellar job! Thanks also to all the local and State law enforcement people who were involved in bringing this to a successful and peaceful conclusion. Thankfully, whichever one of them did the firing at the cops had lousy aim. Strange how the last bank robbery incident that Farmington had involving a chase ended in almost the same place. Back in the 80's, one robber was shot dead at the FSB at Rt. 177 & Rt. 6. The other one grabbed a woman hostage and was forced over on Rt. 10 near Miss Porter's and taken into custody.  (Jun 3, 2009 | post #23)
