South Florida Water Management District spends tax dollar...

Really, it's not that much money for that many people over 5 years. I work for a government agency and the most they will pay is $89/room in Florida. When I have to travel I typically stay at the Hampton Inn. I get $36/day for food, which I admit is pretty high. Anyway, I was traveling up to North Florida quite frequently for a few months as part of my job and instead of staying at a hotel, I figured I would stay with friends. Would you believe that I was told that the agency I work for would rather have me stay at a hotel because parking my state vehicle in front of a house looked bad.  (Feb 14, 2008 | post #104)

Acid may heal Florida's ailing citrus

There are more snake oil salesman in agriculture than any other business except maybe the pharmaceutical business. Needless to say, spraying nutrients and aspirin on your trees is not a cheap endeavor by any means.  (Feb 11, 2008 | post #7)

Developers block environmentalist ballot plans

according to www.homes.com there are 16000 homes for sale in palm beach county, I'm going to assume that each home accounts for at least 0.25 acres so that means there were 4000 acres that didn't need to be irreversibly developed. 4000 acres, 6.25 square miles that didn't need to be developed, If I recall from previous stories that is about the size of callery-judge. Thank god that didn't get approval.  (Feb 5, 2008 | post #9)

Palm Beach County prepares for cuts after tax referendum ...

The county can make huge cuts in their budget. I have a copy of a detailed budget outline for the individual services and some of the things we spend money on are silly. We spend $4 million per year mowing rights of way and medians. That doesn't even include some of the other landscaping that goes on. We have a huge capital reserve $1.5 billion from money we collected but never used. This county is still awash in money but the county simply refuses to use money on things that aren't sweetheart deals to some builder. We are getting 2 new jails when the ones we already have work great. I was completely unaware of the fact that the county operates 2 water parks but we do. Also we spend an assload of money landscaping our county parks. I love the parks and I use them but they don't have to be landscaped the way that they are. And I know that some of you are talking about benefits and what not but in reality a lot of governement employees don't make as much as they would if they were in the corporate world. A police officer would make much better money doing personal security. Even somebody like Bob Weisman would make 7 figures easily in the corporate world. Think of the county as a big company that provides services to 1.5 million people. Most of you homeowners that are homesteaded and have save our homes would quickly find out that you use more services than the 2500/yr you pay in property tax. You are subsidized by renters, second home owners, business owners and farms.  (Jan 31, 2008 | post #156)

New zoning law tackles Lauderdale 'McMansions'

The reason the people are mad is because they bought a house that had some space between them and their neighbors and now their neighbors are all up in their business becuase their bathroom which used to be twenty feet from their neighbor's is now 5 feet away. If you want some big house go build it it on a large lot.  (Jan 29, 2008 | post #30)

High fuel prices are puzzling

Actually, this whole grain to fuel thing will eventually put the arabs at our mercy because the price of grains will increase and since the US is the largest grain producer we could potentially withold food from them.  (Jan 24, 2008 | post #44)

High fuel prices are puzzling

Did you read the story. Demand for gas is not high and now gasoline is just sitting around not being used. We are shipping gasoline out of the country to keep our internal price of gasoline high. Does that make any sense?  (Jan 23, 2008 | post #29)

State Senate wants answers on insurance costs

Hmm...3000/year for 30 years would be 90k in the insurance companies pocket. Maybe once they might have to pay for some damage, but the way houses are built now I doubt they would ever have to pay.  (Jan 10, 2008 | post #83)

Florida schools ranked 14th in nation, despite being 38th...

"Florida teachers earn only 85 cents for every dollar earned by other professions" Of course they only work about 85% of the time that those other profesions work as well. If they teach Summer school their salaries are right in line with the other woefully poor salaries in South Florida.  (Jan 10, 2008 | post #4)

Buckeyes' fall eerily recalls '07 loss to UF

What pisses me off to no end is why didn't Mizzou play USC, at least that would have been an interesting game to watch. Bowl games aren't supposed to be so lopsided like the rose and cotton bowl were.  (Jan 8, 2008 | post #31)

Group seeks amendment giving land-use decisions to voters

When government refuses to act on behalf of its citizens, this is what happens. At best this is an overraction to the problem. People are tired of seeing their hometowns ruined and overdeveloped. There was no need to develop land and put luxury homes on a lot of the land in Palm Beach County, but it happened anyway. Now we have thousands of overpriced vacant homes, and a big vacant couple of sections of land that are nothing more than a big sand pit.  (Jan 8, 2008 | post #7)

Troubling loss puts damper on UF plans in '08

I have never heard so many idiots jabber on about this nonsense, did anyone take a look at the offensive numbers that tebow put up this year, it is obvious that nobody has yet to figure out a way to stop our offense, but our defense is easy to figure out since our secondary coverage is horrendous, we put plenty of pressure on Henne causing all those interceptions but those unfortunately mean nothing when you on the next posession he can just throw a pass and have it miraculously caught. I don't want to hear any of this BS about the spread being dead until somebody holds the gators to under 10 points.  (Jan 2, 2008 | post #41)

Troubling loss puts damper on UF plans in '08

Yes, Florida lost, and they lost 3 other times this year, but were they blown out at all this year? Hell if we had scored 4 more touchdowns this year we would probably national championsip contenders. Our offense, is not the problem and the numbers show that, our defense sucks though.  (Jan 2, 2008 | post #16)

Wives should express themselves in fights

Why do women keep their mouths shut? They know they are wrong. Women argue with their hearts and all too often their arguments don't make logical sense. How many men on here have heard crap from their women about how they spend their own money, or even better how we spend out free time. Recent argument, it was OK to spend $300 on a robotic vacuum that would make my wife's day easier but spend $300 on a tool that would my day easier? Oh that was out of the question.  (Dec 20, 2007 | post #11)
