McCain pledges broad-based tax cuts

1) No, the comparison is perfectly valid. Regardless of whatever education happens in the home, the schools facilitiate the process, thereby providing a service. Most personal dietary needs are met in the home as well, but that doesn't absolve the restaurant from providing satisfactory service. 2) If you want federal/state govt to get out of the school business, how would your vouchers get paid for? You are either advocating the complete collapse of the school system (public AND private) or you're advocating that local governments revise their charters to levy local taxes on residents and businesses to pay for the schools. Either that, or you're not thinking through the implications of what you say you want (I think I see a pattern here). On your final points, education is a priority whether the parents think so or not. Part of the problem with our society is that we have failed to provide an environment that also holds PARENTS accountable for making sure their kids get a good education. I know this runs contrary to the Republican "every man is an island" paradigm but so long as we're living together there will have to be a coordinated approach to improving public education.  (Saturday Jul 19 | post #294)

Gore says transfer to clean energy vital for U.S.

If Bush runs such a progressive home at Crawford then why does he embrace policies that are completely contrary to his personal ideals? Where is the cry from the right over the hypocrisy of their beloved leader? The way some of these folks talk about Gore you would think the idea of one of their own actually implementing some energy-smart technologies would turn their stomachs. As for my "language ", a well-placed expletive used in the context of our President's shoddy treatment of his fellow Americans was quite appropriate, IMO. If you don't like it, hit the Report button and see if the moderators agree. So far they seem content replacing expletives with a bunch of asterisks so the morally fragile are protected from getting all rattled up.  (Friday Jul 18 | post #29)

Gore says transfer to clean energy vital for U.S.

Bush is busy making glass in the desert. The only thing he's planting that will last for future generations is a mountain of debt. Funny how right-wingnuts rarely criticize Gore's pro-environmental message, yet they come out of the woodwork to call him a hypocrite because his carbon footprint is bigger than the rest of ours. It's kind of tough being a global diplomat and NOT buring some carbon given the means available today. Perhaps you think he should stop traveling so much and just phone it in. That would really help get the message out.  (Friday Jul 18 | post #10)

Satellite radio merger at stake

Absolutely. What's fair is fair, right? Except your whole screen name thing isn't adding anything to the discussion.  (Friday Jul 18 | post #6)

Gore says transfer to clean energy vital for U.S.

Missing the forest for the trees, are we? If "practicing what [one] preaches" is such a virtue, Bush and McCain are the worst of the bunch when it comes to the subjects of energy independence and environmental protection.  (Friday Jul 18 | post #6)

Satellite radio merger at stake

When a massive merger between Exxon and Mobil can be approved at the drop of a hat, one wonders why this is taking so long. Oh, wait ... I completely forgot about NAB lobbyists greasing the palms of the FCC and threatening to withhold terrestrial radio air time for politicians who support the merger. Silly me. It makes complete sense now. Move right along. Nothing to see here, folks.  (Friday Jul 18 | post #3)

Gore says transfer to clean energy vital for U.S.

"The Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan group Gore leads, put the 30-year cost of his plan -- both government and private -- at $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion." That's a slower pace of spending than we're currently frittering away on Iraq, folks. Let's get our priorities straight.  (Thursday Jul 17 | post #1)

McCain pledges broad-based tax cuts

Tard said "His Muslim ties scare me more than his ineptitude." You replied "you could learn photoshop and collaborate your imagination" I interjected "Or [Tard could] buy a copy of the New Yorker [showing the Obamas dressed up as muslims]", thereby saving Tard the trouble of learning to photoshop (or use their imagination), since people like Tard are quick to invent evidence to support their paranoia. We're on the same side.  (Thursday Jul 17 | post #278)

Bush chest bumps Air Force cadet

I'm not going to argue that another "stimulus package" is foolish. I thought the first one was foolish as well, but I don't see you complaining about that. You can't cut down the Dems for something (short-sighted reactionary policies) that both parties are guilty of. As for oil, drilling in ANWR is not a "short term" solution. 10 years MINIMUM from the day contractors get NTP to start building the rigs and upping the refinery capacity until any of it reaches the pumps. Besides that simple fact, there isn't enough there to make a significant difference in price at the pump. When one considers that existing leases to drill live fields are sitting idle, what is the hurry to open up protected lands for drilling? Nuclear power is a great idea. There was a huge backlash against it in the 70's but I think reality is setting in to the point where it will cease being villified. Of course, all of the above issues will become easier to solve when we have a President who isn't singularly focused on making glass in the middle east, and will actually turn American ingenuity to domestic benefit.  (Wednesday Jul 16 | post #218)

McCain: Use Iraq strategies in Afghanistan

Bush calls on Congress to OK housing, energy legislation

Yawn. Like a willow, he is. http://www.sptimes .com/2002/05/30/St ate/Bush_s_drillin g_deal_.shtml Nor did he seem to advocate continuing our oil dependence during his SOTU address in 2006, in which he states: "Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable alternative energy sources -- and we are on the threshold of incredible advances..." http://www.whiteho use.gov/news/relea ses/2006/01/200601 31-10.html Even as late as May 2008, the Bush administration considered parts of ANWR "off limits": http://www.enn.com /top_stories/artic le/36444 But, OOPS ... in June 2008 Bush is stumbling over his own energy department to support increased drilling: http://thinkprogre ss.org/2008/06/18/ bush-oil-drilling/ McCain doesn't offer any more consistency on this issue than his forebear... http://www.huffing tonpost.com/2008/0 6/18/mccains-offsh ore-drilling_n_107 872.html Seems like the GOP is jumping on the "drill & drain" bandwagon in a johnny-come-lately effort to look like they're taking a proactive stance on energy independence. We're not fooled.  (Tuesday Jul 15 | post #3)

Bush chest bumps Air Force cadet

You poor, misinformed individual. Dems running on a platform to end the Iraq war in 2006? Link, please. And talk about broken promises, how about this one: "When America uses force in the world, the cause must be just, the goal must be clear, and the victory must be overwhelming, " (George Bush upon accepting the GOP nomination in 2000) Dems blocking oil drilling? I thought Bush and McCain were on the same page (at least until last month until they flip-flopped on it). And to talk of Democrats "using our grandchildren's money...," as if mortgaging our future with foreign nations to bankroll the GOP war machine and fleece the citizenry while cutting huge breaks to corporate oil interests ... have another kool-aid, my friend.  (Tuesday Jul 15 | post #209)

Or buy a copy of the most recent copy of the New Yorker :) http://www.msnbc.m sn.com/id/25673296 / I think it's funny, personally. But, then again, such satire is too subtle for the drooling masses to comprehend. Some folks on the left are all bent out of shape about it, perhaps rightly so, since the wingnuts on the right are now going "See? I told you so!"  (Tuesday Jul 15 | post #266)
