UA will pay $2.1 million in land fight

I always liked Aroma, especially after Cafe Momus shut down. But yeah, Chopstix was just too greasy. Yuk.  (Sep 3, 2008 | post #28)

Police say Buchtel teacher has arsenal in house

I'll withhold judgment until the facts are out. I'm not against folks owning guns...I'm just against stupid folks owning guns :) If he really was getting into armed drunken arguments and stockpiling weed and explosives in his basement, he probably falls into the "stupid" category. But once again, let's see how the facts play out...we still don't know enough about his case. Was he a militant nutjob set for a violent overthrow of the government, or was he merely a gun enthusiast who made his own ammo?  (Sep 3, 2008 | post #81)

McCain says no vice presidential decision yet

By making a snap judgment like that, it shows that you, yourself, fail to "know" why you like Bush or dislike Obama, and you are just parroting what you hear on Rush's radio show. I agree that MoveOn isn't the best, personally, I've unsubscribed from their lists many times. I am a liberal, but I make sure to fully inform myself from sources away from the news media. Try Annenberg Public Policy Center or the Brookings Institution. Both politicians need to be held accountable by the hard facts. By asserting that "all liberals only listen to MoveOn", you are making a logically false argument that you cannot prove.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #15)

McCain says no vice presidential decision yet

I thought all the people blaming Bush were the liberal, educated "elitist " folks with good jobs? Isn't that the label usually assigned to Bush critics? There are lots of folks out there with very good educations who are fully schooled in the issues you mention above, and they still cannot get jobs. No wonder folks are bitter, regardless of their education level.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #12)

Senior complex in Akron hit with phone, water outages

Is it just me, or is that orange paint in the photo plain hideous? Still, I'm sure the residents would be satisfied with temporarily ugly paint as long as their basic utilities worked! I would be curious to see some before/after photos of the units. We need to make sure that our elderly on fixed incomes are treated well...many of us will be in that situation someday.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #11)

Weapon real, badge is not

It was an incredibly stupid thing to do, and luckily no one got hurt. I'm sure that this guy isn't a truly "bad person", and he did not want to actually hurt anyone. However, our legal system still punishes those who engage in prohibited conduct, regardless if that conduct is morally wrong. We all pay the "stupid tax" every once in a while.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #32)

Weapon real, badge is not

Probably a guy with a bit of a power trip. You see this in a lot of different licensed professions, like doctors and attorneys...some folks get so caught up in the idea of being a doctor, lawyer, or cop, they can't wait to get out there and receive the attention. This guy will probably end up with some brief time or a community control sanction, considering his lack of priors. I guess it will depend on the standards that the judge holds him to. Since he was an officer trainee and should have known better, does it make his actions "worse" than if a layperson committed this crime?  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #16)

Condemned inmate Cooey asks for mercy

Arrest made in vet's shooting

Is it just me, or do at least two of those guys have lazy eyes? Maybe it's the camera angle. Poetic justice would dictate that these young men be drafted into the military, be forcefully put through boot camp (maybe two or three times), and then sent to fight. It would be a heck of a lot tougher and riskier than a jail sentence for them, and maybe they could be contributing members of society again, rather than a drain. It would probably be cheaper on the taxpayer dime, too.  (Aug 15, 2008 | post #18)

Building to be auctioned off

Actually, I wouldn't doubt it if UA decided to buy the building. It's right next to the ex-Jillian's block, and not far from Polsky. Isn't someone already developing off-campus housing and entertainment there? Heck, if it means one less empty building and more people downtown, I say they should go for it. They'd probably get a good deal on this building, considering what they're spending on the eminent domain proceedings near the new stadium.  (Aug 14, 2008 | post #15)

Georgian couple settle near Akron, fear for family back home

So, what were the "liberals " supposed to do? Rally other Americans, buy a flight to Georgia, and fight? There was quite a bit of condemnation coming from both democrats and republicans. Did you see the statements issued from the candidates the other day? Even Bush condemned the actions. We also halted all planned military exercises w/Russia, in protest. There's been quite a bit of dialogue over this from both sides of the aisle. This was all very sudden, it just occurred this week. If the US gets involved, it will have to be after our government has fully evaluated everything (unlike Iraq). Despite popular misconceptions, we just can't jump in and jump out of a war.  (Aug 13, 2008 | post #4)

Rape defendant admits one case, but not all four

Sex offender recidivism rates have been remarkably overhyped. Take a look at this article and the links to the DOJ data. No groundbreaking revelations on either side of the debate, but the data tends to show that rapists can be "fixed" (in a behavioral sense, not the veterinarian sense): http://blogs.wsj.c om/numbersguy/how- likely-are-sex-off enders-to-repeat-t heir-crimes-258/  (Aug 12, 2008 | post #37)
