Free Office alternative? Sweet --

Excellent advice. Having worked in the computer department of a retail chain, I can offer a few more tips to those who need an alternative to Microsoft Office, especially for personal use. Countless people over the years (yes, unfortunately 'years') would expect to buy the full version of Office Standard ($399) for nothing more than basic word processing. I would always take pleasure in informing them thta Microsoft offers some alternatives for people that want a cheaper solution, but are intimidated by using unfamiliar software. The first would be Microsoft Office Home and Student edition. This retails for $149 at major retail chains, and less at retailers such as It contains the full version of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint with a non-commercial license. This means that you get the same programs you would pay $399 for, for a lot less, as long as you are using it for school or for non-commercial purposes. Another alternative is Microsoft Works Suite, which retails for $99 and includes Microsoft Word XP. Word XP is two-generations old (First released 6 years ago), but still holds up against the newer versions. Some people may prefer the more simple interface of the older version. Works Suite also comes bundled with other programs, such as Microsoft Encarta and Microsoft Streets and Trips. Even cheaper is Microsoft Works. Works comes bundled on most new PCs, but if you needed to purchase it, you can find if for around $49. Works offers some of the more popular functions of Word in their word processor, including spell check, but there are a few drawbacks. The default format that Works saves documents in is a *.wps file. Microsoft Word will not read this file. You must select *.doc from the pull down menu in order to open the file in Word, which you may want to do if sending the file to someone else, working between home and the office, or if you were bringing the file to a print shop to get copies made. Works also has programs for basic spreadsheets, presentations, and other projects. I'm not a Microsoft fanboy by any means, but in my experience, many people are afraid to use anything else.  (Jul 7, 2007 | post #2)
