A cougar comeback in northwestern Louisiana?

I am surprised that so many people have never seen any of these big cats. I moved here from California 5 years ago where we had plenty of mountain lions. Like I said I have only been here for 5 years and so far I have seen two (2) big black cats. I know they were not the same cat because of size and the location of where I have seen them, one in my yard under a yard light 50 feet from the house. I thought nothing of it because I thought it was normal as in California. The first and larger cat was so black it made the color black seem dull, the smaller cat was also black but not as deep a black color as the first. I live in Claiborne Parish on Claiborne lake where seeing such animals would be expected when they come to drink. To me, seeing these cats is not a big deal and I do have training to know what I see.  (Jul 10, 2009 | post #120)

Elderly man shot by police during drug investigation

It sure is funny how people that a week ago had no idea where Homer was on a map are now experts on the problems that Homer has had and now has. I have given up reading the KTLA message site because of all the "I know everything" people that are posting there. Maybe more locals that were actually there when things went bad will post here to tell the rest of us locals what they saw or heard themselves. We all know our local paper will make a short story of what happened and not have the FULL story for those that were not there to be well informed. I don't live inside Homer, I am just a few miles outside of town and I am a disabled vet so I for one do not hear all the news of the events happening. I can say that for a town still in the dark ages according to the know it alls, in my 5 years of living here I have found Homer a very friendly place no matter what color their or my skin is. I see only the trouble makers trying to make Homer out as a bad place to live. We all know that the state police will investigate this matter and if the people that witnessed the event stay quiet and only let those that want to start problems speak out then we all lose. So, if you saw something, no matter how little or how it effects the outcome either way I urge you to write it down and speak out to the state police for us all to have a better Homer.  (Feb 23, 2009 | post #2)

Is it Racist to not vote for Obama?

If your a disabled Veteran you sure don't want McCain elected. His record for standing up for Veterans issues has a grade of 'D' as with most other Republicans. Obama has a grade of 'B' on the same issues. The lowest grade any Democrat got from Veterans Today was a grade of 'C' and the highest grade for Republicans was a grade of 'C-'. Until I researched this information I was a full supporter for Republicans running for office. I was fooled by them and their leader is McCain in the senate. So, if your a Veteran or know one and see the benefits shrinking and want more of it to happen keep voting Republican! The color of a mans skin has nothing to do with what kind of leader he is and as a white retired military Vietnam disabled Veteran I see Obama as a much better leader than the angry old man McCain could ever be. With all the mudslinging this presidential race has had does anyone really think a terrorist could be on the ticket? If you do then you can buy a bridge to nowhere real cheap by calling anyone in Alaska. Stop listening to rumors and look up the real facts for yourself. You might also look up the facts of McCains time as a POW. Ask yourself how he was given so much attention and hospital care when others were being tortured in the same camp, maybe it was as the facts prove it to be, he told the enemy every and anything they wanted to know. If his father wasn't an Admiral he would have been court-martialed when he was released for aiding the enemy. LOOK IT UP for yourself!  (Nov 4, 2008 | post #141)

Obama's Mein Kampf

By now, we've all seen the John McCain campaign ads on TV. The stoic gentleman with his head held high. A war veteran and a former POW. With this in mind, one would assume the Senator from Arizona, running for U.S. President would take care of the vets. However, a review of his voting record shows quite the contrary. Did you know: He voted NO on Additional Funding For Veterans Amendment which states, "S Amdt 2634 to S 2020: To provide an additional $500,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2006 through 2010, to be used for readjustment counseling, related mental health services, and treatment and rehabilitative services for veterans with mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, or substance use disorder." He voted NO on Health Care for Veterans Amendment which states, "S Amdt 1937 to HR 2863: To ensure that future funding for health care for former members of the Armed Forces takes into account changes in population and inflation." McCain voted NO on Tax Rate Extension Amendment which reads, "S Amdt 2735 to S Amdt 2707 to HR 4297: To support the health needs of our veterans and military personnel and reduce the deficit by making tax rates fairer for all Americans." He voted NO on Military Funding and Tax Cuts Amendment which says, "S Amdt 2737 to S Amdt 2707 to HR 4297: To strengthen America's military, to repeal the extension of tax rates for capital gains and dividends, to reduce the deficit, and for other purposes". And he voted NO for Expressing Support for All Men and Women in the U.S. Armed Forces which states, "Vote to adopt an amendment that opposes comments that criticize the honor, integrity, and patriotism of individuals serving or having served honorably in the United States Armed Forces." He also voted NO on State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization which states, "HR 976: A bill to amend title XXI of the Social Security Act to reauthorize the State Children's Health Insurance Program, and for other purposes." He voted NO on Hurricane Victims Tax Benefit Amendment which says "S Amdt 2602 to S 2020: To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide tax benefits for areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma and to extend certain expiring provisions, and for other purposes." He voted NO on Family Tax Relief Amendment which states, "S AMDT 527 to S 949: To provide tax relief for working families, to increase the rate and spread the benefits of economic growth, and for other purposes." McCain voted NO on Employment Nondiscrimination Act of 1996 which states, "Vote to pass a bill that extends the federal protections provided under the Civil Rights Act to sexual orientation. "S 2056: A bill to prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. He voted NO on Native American Funding Amendment which states, "S AMDT 211 to S Con Res 18: To restore funding for tribal programs and provide necessary additional funding based on recommendations from Indian country." He voted NO on Union Organization Bill which reads, "HR 800: To amend the National Labor Relations Act to establish an efficient system to enable employees to form, join, or assist labor organizations, to provide for mandatory injunctions for unfair labor practices during organizing efforts, and for other purposes." And finally, McCain voted NO on Hate Crimes Bill which reads, "S 625: A bill to provide Federal assistance to States and local jurisdictions to prosecute hate crimes, and for other purposes. Vote on a motion to invoke cloture on a bill that would allow the Federal government to assist State and local government when prosecuting hate crimes." Obama explains why he doesn't salute the US Flag

I see here no mention that at the third debate Obama showed the U.S. flag on his suit and McCain didn't. I guess McCain no longer respects the flag either since I never saw him salute it. Clueless says he is from a family of service people but never says he served, this helps me understand why he is clueless. I see other comments about Joe the plumber but none mention he isn't even registered to vote, makes me think he might have relatives in Alaska that buy six packs or other relatives in the lower 48 that are clueless.  (Oct 18, 2008 | post #28)

Obama explains why he doesn't salute the US Flag

Lets not mix up clueless with real facts that he doesn't want to hear anyway. He is confused enough to be clueless. I bet he doesn't even know that "Veterans Today" has given McCain a grading of a 'D-' for voting for Veterans Benefits and that McCain sits on the Veterans oversite panel. Of course that may not bother Clueless who may not be a Veteran, but to us Disabled Veterans needing the care from the VA for injuries we have from serving our country it means everything. In case your interested, both Obama and Biden were given a grade of B+ from the same source. I know who is watching my back in Washington and it sure isn't McCain!  (Oct 14, 2008 | post #21)

Obama explains why he doesn't salute the US Flag

WOW, rumors abound on Obama here and I do mean rumors. Do you think for one moment that McCain would not be jumping all over any facts that Obama had Muslim ties or does not respect or salute the American flag? Get real! As a Veteran I am able to see the lies that McCain tells but it seems you prefer to believe his stories and any bad rumors you can pass on about Obama. I am saying this as a registered republican, McCain will put us all on the streets outside the full poor house. Investigate the facts instead of passing on false rumors!  (Oct 2, 2008 | post #10)

Claiborne Parish looking cleaner

The roadsides of Claiborne Parish are looking cleaner as less people are tossing their garbage out their car windows. It sure is making it nicer to drive through the Parish and see the greenery growing instead of the garbage decaying. Now it would be nice for those that use their yards as a city dump to be spoken to by their neighbors to really make our home a nice place to live. Is it that they don't care what their yards look like and home many flies it draws or is it they have just run out of room inside to toss their junk and garbage? In any case, thank you all for making the Parish a cleaner and healthier place to live minus a few who seem to be proud to live in their own filth and garbage.  (Mar 31, 2008 | post #1)

wake up!!!

It seems that anything that would benefit Claiborne Parish goes without comment from those that live here which in turn gives our leaders a reason to ignore items that would benefit the people, in this case developement of the North end of lake Claiborne. Are the people of Claiborne Parish content on living in one of the poorest Parishes/counties in the United States? Seems so, the main topic of discussion here seems to be police related or the closing of Wal-Mart instead of what needs to be done to improve conditions for all of us in Claiborne Parish. I have said my bit, now lets get back to the "I don't care" way of life which is the norm for Claiborne Parish residents.  (Jan 24, 2008 | post #2)

US News

Headlines you won't see

Veterans are involved is less violent crimes than non-vets. This is a fact but not news worthy even though the vet has been trained to be violent. But let a vet commit a violent crime and it is posted in every paper coast to coast.  (Jan 17, 2008 | post #1)
