Harvard makes potent stem cells from ordinary mature cells

Three papers from Harvard and the Hubrecht Insitute find ordinary mammal cells can "go stem cell" after injury to replace lost cells. This salamander-like ability has "deep evolutionary origins" and could have major ramifications for regenerative medicine. http://www.bioscie ncetechnology.com/ blogs/2014/04/stre ss-may-naturally-m ake-stem-cells-mat ure-cells  (May 2, 2014 | post #1)

Controversial STAP "acid bath" stem cell work may finally have been repeated. Scientists are working to see if the attempt was successful. It involves trituration, not acid at all. It may be a kind of last minute save for the groups at Harvard and Riken putting out the papers--although it is likely the papers will be retracted regardless. http://www.bioscie ncetechnology.com/ articles/2014/04/s cientist-said-he-m ay-have-made-stap- cells%E2%80%94just -riken-called-frau d  (Apr 4, 2014 | post #1)

Stem cells made from any cells in the body via acid? Scientists are doing experiments and offering tips on both sides of this issue, which has been consuming the professional stem cell world. http://www.bioscie ncetechnology.com/ blogs/2014/03/natu re-rejects-challen ge-acid-stem-cells -scientists-try-ne w-tips  (Mar 25, 2014 | post #1)

Scientists Clarify Some Mysteries re: "Acid Bath Stem Cells"

Two recent Nature papers claimed stem cells can be made from any cell in the body simply by stressing them with acid. They are bolstered by the fact that science is indeed finding our cells can dedifferentiate to the stem cell state, in order to better combat injury. Scientists offer new updates on either side of this issue in this story: http://www.bioscie ncetechnology.com/ blogs/2014/03/natu re-rejects-challen ge-acid-stem-cells -scientists-try-ne w-tips  (Mar 25, 2014 | post #1)

Tensions are heightening over the historic "acid bath" stem cell phenomenon. There are now two camps among the co-authors of Nature papers (Obokata et al) claiming to be able to make extraordinary stem cells from ordinary mature cells with acid. One camp, Riken, wants to retract the papers. The other camp, Harvard, is standing behind them, saying the cells are easily made. http://www.bioscie ncetechnology.com/ blogs/2014/03/acid -bath-stem-cell-de velopments-rapidly -accumulate  (Mar 18, 2014 | post #1)
