Why has the Herald forced all commenters to identify them...

We tried that for two years, but the tone of conversations continually descended into name calling and offensive comments. For years we've weighed the pros and cons of allowing anonymous comments versus requiring registration, and while I've always been an advocate of allowing anonymity, I'm also the one who spends far too much time moderating offensive comments. Here's an article about why we switched: http://www.montere yherald.com/ci_170 79017 Thank you for your feedback. Lisa Mitchell, online editor  (Jan 14, 2011 | post #2)

2010 grand jury report: Jurors urge CalPERS reform.

Thanks for the heads-up! The script that adds the commenting ability to stories sometimes gets the headline wrong, and it can be hard to catch. We're in the process of changing it, so thanks again! Lisa Mitchell, online editor  (Jan 11, 2011 | post #3)

Alejo builds his reputation

We frequently modify headlines for improved search engine optimization. In this case, I had been out of the office and modified dozens of headlines upon my return Monday, this being one of them. Lisa Mitchell, online editor  (Jan 5, 2011 | post #29)

Bachofner grabs Seaside mayor's slot

Thank you for bringing that to my attention! I had intended to update or remove the Politics listings from the home page in December; I'll take care of that right now! Thanks again! Lisa  (Jan 5, 2011 | post #20)

Neil Shapiro: Cost of execution too high

It was apparently removed by Topix administrators, not The Herald, so I'm not exactly sure why it was deleted. But it may have been because it contained personal information about someone, who may or may not have been the person posting the comment. (There is no way to verify the source.) You can use the feedback form below ("Send us your feedback" link below the comment box) to see if Topix administrators will tell you. Letters: Lack of action in Carmel

Honestly, we cannot prove when a vote has been corrupted, though we may suspect it. It's very possible that hundreds of people were moved to vote in the poll. We leave it to readers to interpret the results. Lisa Mitchell, online editor The Monterey County Herald  (Aug 5, 2010 | post #14)
