Middle East’s professionals too overworked to eat healthily

Almost a third of professionals across the Middle East region (28%) are overworked to the point that they only manage to eat once a day - normally fast food and at night, according to the results of a recent online poll series conducted by Bayt.com. Another 26% of respondents agreed that they were not very healthy - managing to sometimes have lunch and snack on chocolate and other items during the day, while 21% stated that they are healthy enough, and manage to pack a lunch or at least healthy snacks from home. At the other end of the scale, the results showed that only 17% of professionals manage to eat fairly healthily, making it a point to eat at least two meals during the course of the working day, and only 8% considered themselves as very healthy, sticking to an eating plan during the day that includes four to five small meals. Consumer Confidence is up in the UAE for first time in a year

Consumer Confidence is up in the UAE for first time in a year, latest Bayt.com and YouGovSiraj Index reveals 44% of total respondents also believe business conditions will improve in a year’s time, while 28% believe more jobs will be available UAE consumers feel the region’s economic pressures may be lifting, with the first recorded upward shift in consumer confidence in a year. These are the UAE results from the latest Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) - which has moved up by 15.9 index points as compared to the previous wave in Feb 09. This was the largest improvement amongst all the countries surveyed. The Consumer Confidence Index is a quarterly survey conducted by the Middle East’s number one job site - Bayt.com in and research specialists YouGov. While respondents remain largely pessimistic about their current financial position, the country’s economy and whether or not it’s a good time to buy goods, optimism reigns for the future, with 44% believing business conditions - and 37% believing their country’s economy - will be better in a year’s time. More than half of the region’s professionals have changed working behaviour

Bayt.com has found that more than half of the region’s professionals, 52%, have changed their behaviour or attitudes towards their work as a result of the current economic downturn, and the ongoing concerns that employees have in terms of job security. Added job responsibilities mean that 32% of professionals are working harder, while fear of losing their job is prompting a fifth to work harder. By contrast, 27% of the region’s professionals are working at the same level as before, while 16%, feeling the pressure of the economic crisis, are working much less, citing themselves as de-motivated to work. Job fears among professionals regarding job security back up a recent study by Bayt.com that found that 65% of the region’s professionals were worried about the security of their job. Temporary contracts best response to current economic crisis

Enabling and encouraging temporary work contracts is the best response to the global economic downturn, the results of a recent poll conducted by Bayt.com, have revealed. With increasing job losses and labor market insecurities being widespread across the region, 59% of professionals across a wide spectrum of industries and jobs have confirmed this statement while almost a third - 32% - didn’t consider it as a way to deal with the current economic situation in the Middle East. When asked whether they thought that extending work hours and increasing responsibilities of existing human resources is a good response to the crisis, the majority of respondents - 54% - disagreed, while 37% of those surveyed approved. 61% of KSA’s professionals worried about current job situation

Concerns about the current job situation prevail around the Middle East with 65% of the region’s professionals worrying about job security, according to a recent poll of more than 10,000 professionals by the Middle East’s number one job site -Bayt.com, in conjunction with research specialists YouGov. In Saudi Arabia, 61% of professionals are worried about their job situation, while professionals in the UAE are the most concerned about the job situation at 74% of those surveyed. Around the rest of the Gulf region the majority are also concerned including 62% of Qatar’s respondents and 67% of Kuwait’s respondents. The ‘Job Situation in the Recession’ survey was conducted to understand how the current recession is affecting people professionally, and financially; by asking their feelings and attitudes towards the situation of their job, company and financial position, and their own experiences or knowledge of job losses throughout the recent period. The survey went on to address how professionals are feeling about the survival of their company: the research shows 50% are concerned for their company’s security. Once again, UAE’s respondents are the most concerned, with 59% citing worries about the future of their workplace compared to 47% of respondents in KSA.
