Minnesota students fall short in science, test scores show

The irony is that we are not a democracy we are a republic... if you are going to call someone else ignorant don't base it on your own ignorance, but thanks for playing..  (Jul 27, 2009 | post #70)

White House qualifies Obama remark about arrest of black ...

The question and answer were deisgned to take some of the sting out of the health care debate as a whole. A whole lot of creative truths were told last night and yet people are talking about a Cop doing his job and getting called stupid for it..  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #25)

Minnesota students fall short in science, test scores show

So to get this straight... WE spend 10-13K *per kid* in Minnesota to teach them and poor performance is *my fault* for not volunteering? If I received just half that amount per kid my wife could home school our two kids with a budget of 10-15 thousand dollars! and do a far better job than the schools..  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #58)

West St. Paul hears idea to let homeowners occupy vacant ...

3 months is enough time to look for an apartment and a job. This is a wonderful idea so long as: 1) they somehow make sure the properties are well cared for by the residents 2) They make sure nobody does the 'don't evict me' dance to stay for another 3-6 months  (Jun 18, 2009 | post #8)

Where Pawlenty's budget ax falls

Top 40% of wage earners in Minnesota pay 40% of the taxes, that seems pretty fair to me..  (Jun 17, 2009 | post #65)

Destructive beetle stopped from entering Minnesota

Given I used to live on the shores of lake Erie I have to say Zebra Mussels are about the best import we have ever had, they shaved decades off of cleaning the lake.. I know they are hell for boaters and mess with the ecosystem in the lake itself but at least the water is clean*er  (Jun 17, 2009 | post #5)

Pawlenty says he'll cut hospitals, local government, high...

Pawlenty got more votes than anyone else.. He won Both Line Item Veto and Un-Allotment are completely constitutional practices that were in place long before T-Paw was in office and has been used by other governors in the past so no, I dont see anything wrong with it. T-Paw may have not won as many votes as the DFL did in the legislature but this means two things 1) Many people who voted for a DFL legislature also voted for Pawlenty (if they had voted party line T-Paw would have lost) 2) Given the fact Pawlenty has a far higher approval rating than the legislature perhaps people are seeing the error of their way. Saying 'We got more votes than the Governor' is using mob rule tactics which is not the way a structured Republic operates..  (Jun 17, 2009 | post #210)

Where Pawlenty's budget ax falls

What 6% a year increases over the past decade not enough for you..  (Jun 17, 2009 | post #54)

Hard times, hard choices

The cuts to hospitals and Homeless services are going to be the two most painful to swallow. But the rest all seem pretty reasonable. LGA: If your town or city cant take a 3% hit in their budget this year you have serious leadership problems and throwing good money after bad is not going to help. K-12: 40$ less per pupil? Really in Minneapolis and Saint Paul more than 11K per Pupil is spent. If you 'can get by' on $11,000 but the world ends at $10,960 again you have some serious leadership problems at the school board and school administrative levels. Elder Care: This says it all -> "Pawlenty would cut that to 275 hours. The cap could eliminate some fraudulent billing to the state — some PCAs claimed more than 24 hours of work in a day" Universities: 4.5% tuition increase at UM to cover, not terrible. Seems the universities were ahead of the curve and are going to lose less than they had expected. Block Grants: In this economy why should block *GRANTS* be counted on, if they were being used all these years for capital improvements then losing them would not be an issue but counties that use them for core services deserve the difficult adjustment. Mental Health: 6% temporary cut not bad, nothing that many people are not having to deal with.. -- Hopefully when the House and Senate come back in January they can act like adults and tune this a bit..  (Jun 17, 2009 | post #3)

Pawlenty says he'll cut hospitals, local government, high...

Dictatorship? Was Pawlenty not elected? Will he not be out of office in 2 years? Did he not sign the budget signed by the DFL? he is just going to line item veto things the state cant afford. Had the DFL been serious about cutting spending this would not have happened..  (Jun 16, 2009 | post #198)

Family shutters abortion clinic

That's enough. You have no basis on which to accuse her of lying. This is the internet so there is usually a 70% chance someone is lying but aside from that fact (which holds for you and I) I have seen no inconsistencies. It is possible to talk with her about how wrong Abortion and the even a short, crippled human life has all the ame rights that I do, or that you do without insulting..  (Jun 16, 2009 | post #72)

Pawlenty says he'll cut hospitals, local government, high...

Me, I am a Bankrupt DFL supporter... I love to see my government reflect who I am. I spent too much money and for years just assumed that I could keep up with 6-10% spending increases. When I dont have enough I start going into other peoples pockets to support my poor budgeting skills. I fully support the brain trust in the MN legislature that wanted to eliminate deductions on home mortgage, and raise taxes on things like Alcohol and Cigarettes...  (Jun 16, 2009 | post #75)
