Gay Marriage - Greensboro, NC

Blue- If straight couples can marry for reasons other than procreation and love, like for money and security, why shouldn’t gay and lesbian couples be allowed to marry for love and enjoy the same benefits? The government doesn’t ask straight couples for their reasons for wanting to get married. It is taken for granted that they love one another and want to share their lives and may have children. Then they get certain benefits for doing so, even if it is all a big lie! Why shouldn’t homosexuals have the same opportunities? Fine, I get the point that it is about money…..but straight couples have been marrying for money, security, and social standing since the beginning! To ban gay marriage based only on this argument would mean that the government should require all heterosexual couples seeking marriage licenses to prove that they are marrying for love, devotion, and procreation. That is not going to happen!  (Dec 6, 2010 | post #65)

Gay Marriage - Greensboro, NC

Chris, I have many homosexual friends and would love to see them have the same rights as I do as it pertains to marriage. I do feel for you! Our government should have no say in what is, ultimately, a personal decision. There are a lot of people out there that married for money, security or any other reason but love. Are they happy? Do they stay married? Most likely not! If/when this ever gets on the ballot in NC, you can bet I'll be all for it! Good luck and God bless!  (Dec 3, 2010 | post #62)

Disabled N.C. Girl Vanishes; Parents Questioned

I'm sitting at my desk wiping tears away. Even though we all knew this was not going to end well, I think some of us held onto the slightest of hopes that by some miracle she would be alive! I hope those responsible for her death never know another moment of sunshine on their faces, another pleasant feeling, the feel of a warm embrace, the calm of restful mind! May they live the rest of their lives reliving her last moments as she felt them! Animals! There is no pain or punishment that will serve as justice for sweet Zahra!  (Nov 12, 2010 | post #3038)

Disabled N.C. Girl Vanishes; Parents Questioned

Wow....my heart just breaks a little more every day for Zahra. Here is the latest: http://www.wsoctv. com/news/25686699/ detail.html So very sad to think these monsters could do the unthinkable to this sweet baby girl! But all indications are that they did, indeed, spread her about the county…….I cannot even fathom a punishment harsh enough for them!  (Nov 9, 2010 | post #2682)

Truck Kills Worker Mowing Along I-95

Don't get me wrong, it sucks that a man lost his life due to the negligence of another. But, had the driver's last name been Smith, there would have been no comments about race, therefore, no rebuttals about race.......  (Oct 28, 2010 | post #7)

So everyone with a Spanish last name is now an illiterate and/or illegal Mexican? So we can also assume that everyone that posts ignorant racist remarks is a red neck bigot...  (Oct 28, 2010 | post #5)

Cops Resume Search for Missing Hickory Girl

Mandy, I read somewhere last week that the bio mother had abandoned her and her father when she was a baby. It seems she hasn't been a part of her life in a long time. I will try to find that article again and post the link for you. MLC75  (Oct 27, 2010 | post #21)

Mother Delivers Baby While Driving to Hospital

I find it very sad that a human interest story, with a happy ending, has turned into a pile of vile, degrading, and pathetic comments! There was no mention in this article about the father, her way of life, her religion, or her means. Speculation and assumptions on any of those have NOTHING to do with this story. Comment on the fact that she made a bad decision by getting behind the wheel. We have no idea why she made that choice, and I'm sure she regrets it. But to comment on how many children she has or how she supports them is no one's business! She doesn't need any one's permission to have babies. It may not be what a lot of you would choose for yourselves, but she is her own person and is allowed to make her own life choices, up to and including how many children she would like to have!! I'm happy that no one was hurt and that the baby and mother came through this ok.  (Oct 20, 2010 | post #52)

Student Suspended For Wearing Breast Cancer Awareness T-S...

Yes, I’m sure some students are all about the “shock” value and pushing the envelope to see what they can get away with. And I agree that teens need to learn that life is full of rules that should be followed. I think that teenagers would rebel less if they were given a sense that they had rights and that they are heard. They need outlets for expression and clothing, hair and makeup are ways for them to do that. For example: When I was a high school Freshman in 1989, the school decided not to allow any more black, heavy metal band t-shirts. They were viewed as Satanic. White AC/DC or Metallica shirts were fine, but not black! We wanted to know why! We, the student body, had a peaceful sit-in in our courtyard, all wearing black heavy metal band shirts. Even the students like me that didn’t really care for that kind of music went out and got a t-shirt to support this. The rule was just so dumb. Our parents were not upset with us. They supported us and let us express our displeasure with this crazy rule. No one was suspended and the rule was done away with. We learned that if you are treated unfairly, you can stand up for your rights in a peaceful, respectful way. I think that is what is lacking now. These students are automatically looked at like trouble makers and no one is really listening to them and hearing their reasons for these “shocking” acts.  (Oct 19, 2010 | post #60)

Student Suspended For Wearing Breast Cancer Awareness T-S...

My main point was that the adults are making these situations more of a distraction than the original offense caused! I am absolutely not advocating breaking rules! I simply feel that high school is where the rules need to be more flexible. So he wears an “I love boobies” t-shirt that supports a great cause! There were no photos of naked breasts on the shirt. I’ve seen kids wear Hooter’s shirts to school with no consequences. So she has a small nose piercing for religious purposes! It isn’t as if she is pierced in every possible orifice or available skin to the point it is grotesque, therefore distracting! And another one wants to assert her pride in her sexuality! The shirt said nothing of an actual sex act! I understand and support most school rules. But when it comes to dress codes, I think they go a bit too far. I understand covering yourself (no short shorts, or too short minis, no mid-drift showing), but to not allow these examples above is just a bit too controlling for me. Teenagers are practicing to be adults. They need guidance to make the right choices, they do not need to be stifled in every aspect of their lives!  (Oct 19, 2010 | post #58)

Anti-Gay Slurs Chanted at Football Game, School Under Fire

I wonder how many parents in the crowd were also chanting right along? This is just sad. Our children will not learn tolerance until they see it in their parents.....  (Oct 19, 2010 | post #3)

I think there are a lot more serious problems in our schools than the things I've seen in the news lately. This kid, the 15 yr old girl with a lesbian love t-shirt, the girl with the nose ring....WHO CARES? The adults in these situations are making it a bigger distraction than any of the students. I bet that not one student in any of these cases made a complaint. If you are distracted because of what someone's t-shirt says, or because of a small nose piercing, you have bigger problems that need to be dealt with! Someone claimed (on another thread) that students wearing Nike - Just Do It t-shirts are being made to turn them inside out or change them. Give me a break! We are teaching out kids to be offended at every turn!! How about tackling drugs, truancy, violence and sex education instead of attacking these kids for expressing themselves?  (Oct 19, 2010 | post #56)
